Chapter I

Introduction

The changing of curriculum is a better way of improving a schools or

colleges for the possible future of the students and not only for the students

because also the future of the country. It was about the suggestion for the future

planning of changes in curriculum. In this era of on-going new developments in

curriculum, it was imperative to find out how new changes are affecting the

interest of the students to continue their study and maybe the possible learning of

the students in sudden change of a curriculum.

The term curriculum refers to the lessons and academic content taught in

a school or in a specific course or program. In dictionaries, curriculum is often

defined as the courses offered by a school, but it is rarely used in such a general

sense in schools. Depending on how broadly educators define or employ the

term, curriculum typically refers to the knowledge and skills students are

expected to learn, which includes the learning standards or learning

objectives they are expected to meet; the units and lessons that teachers teach;

the assignments and projects given to students; the books, materials, videos,

presentations, and readings used in a course; and the tests, assessments, and

other methods used to evaluate student learning. An individual teachers

curriculum, for example, would be the specific learning standards, lessons,

assignments, and materials used to organize and teach a particular course.

The aim of the study is to investigate the impact of curriculum change for

the Quezon City Polytechnic University students attitude and relationship

between attitudes as students and behaviour as professionals in practice. This

purpose of this research is simply to know the positive and negative effects of

curriculum change to the students in QCPU, but not including the all students,

because other students were not conquered about this study.

Background of the Study

To provide education that will awaken the full understanding of the

essence of the natural resources of the country and the potentials of the human

resources of the nation. The mission statement of Quezon City Polytechnic

University.

The Quezon City Polytechnic was created on March 1, 1994 by virtue of

the City Council Ordinance No. SP-171 an institution to primarily undertake the

training and development of qualified technicians and skilled workers.

The Three-Year Technician Curriculum was introduced in the SY 1994-

1995 designed to develop highly competent technicians for industry in the areas

of Automotive Technology, Electrical Technology, Welding Technology,

Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning Technology, and Fashion Technology. Added

to the Three-Year Curriculum in the school year that followed were Electronics
Technology, Mechanical Technology or Machine Shop, Computer Technology

and an industry-led pilot course in Boiler Technology.

The QCPU established its reputation among local government units as a

show window and model technology-based institution paving the way for its

recognition of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority

(TESDA) and developing a strong alliance with the Japan International

Cooperation Agency (JICA).

In 2001, Ordinance SP 1030 created a charter for the establishment of

Quezon City Polytechnic University. QCPU started its operation by offering one

(1) year programs and short term courses. By the year 2005, QCPU started

offering college degree courses. Right now, QCPU prides itself in providing

employment to its graduates and serves as a tool for national development,

particularly in Quezon City.

Since SY 2005, meaningful access to higher education is now possible

with a ladderized concept of pursuing higher education. The idea is that every

person should have the opportunity for education and training commensurate to

his abilities. Now, QCPU offers 3 Degree Programs and 8 Regular Technical-

Vocational Courses, as well as Special Short-term courses.

At present, it has three campuses, San Bartolome (the main campus), San

Francisco (satellite campus) and Batasan Hills (satellite campus), all locate in

Quezon City.
Conceptual Framework

It is necessary to know the process that the research will undergo. Below

is the research paradigm prepared by the researchers for this study.

Fig.1 Research Paradigm on the study

The figure shows the process of determining the positive & negative

impact of sudden change of curriculum to Entrepreneurial Management,

Industrial Engineering and Information Technology students. In the Input section

the researchers will ask the respondents profile including Students year, Gender,

Course and the copies of curriculum of respective courses through surveying or

giving questioners to the respondents the researcher will be able to determine

the impact of changing the curriculum suddenly to the students of respective

courses.
Statement of the Problem

This study attempts to determine the impact of the swift changes in the

school curriculum of Quezon City Polytechnic University (QCPU) to students but

not in general. The students that are involved with this problem are the

Transferee, the Irregular and the Returnee students who are studying and

enrolling in the year between the previous curriculum suddenly change into new

curriculum.

Specifically, this study will seek answers to the following questions:

1. How can the respondents profile be described in terms of:

1.1 Age

1.2 Gender

1.3 Course

1.4 Present Year Level

1.5 Year Level Enrolled in the University

2. What are the impact of the changes in the curriculum to the students of

Quezon City Polytechnic University?

3. Does the changes affects the school performance of the students in

the Bachelor Degree in Information Technology, Entrepreneurial

Management and Industrial Engineering?

4. What are the reasons why the University need to change its

curriculum?
Scope and Limitation of the Study

Scopes

This study is focus on the sudden change of school curriculum and the

effect of this to the students of the QCPU.

This research can determine the main problem of the study.

This research can know the solution for this study.

This study covers the most effective study habits that can help the

students to graduate.

Limitations

This study is only for the QCPU students.

This study is only focus for the students only, does not include the all

professors, administration, and the faculty member.

The K-12 or the Senior High is not related of this study.

Significance of the Study

The results of this study will provide insights and information on the

sudden change of school curriculum in the Quezon City Polytechnic University

(QCPU) and the effect of this to the students.

To the Regular Students:

They will become more knowledgeable on the school curriculum and what

curriculum they are taking now.

To the Irregular Students:

They will become more prepared and aware on the sudden changes has

been made while they are not enrolled and ready to the new subjects they need

to take.

To the Transferee Students:

They will become knowledgeable and aware to the course they have

chosen and prepared to the subjects they need to take in the University to finish

their Bachelors degree.
