Notes
1
Usage determined based on local information or from the EMI Civil Preliminary Design Guide Agriculture -
2
The total usage rate is calculated by multiplying the per capita usage rate by the total number of users (i.e. Other -
users for all buildings).
3
Watewater production is equal to total water usage, which assumes that inflow & infiltration replaces any TOTAL WATER USAGE
water consumed. L/day -

N = Years between 1
Septic tank design based on "A Guide to Development of On-Site Sanition" by the World Health Organization, 1992, using the following criteria
Desludging: for liquid retention times:
If Q < 6,000 L/day, T = 24 hours
F = Sludge Digestion Rate
If 14,000 L/day > Q > 6,000 L/day, T = 33 - 0.001Q hours
Factor: If Q > 14,000 L/day, T = 12 hours
where: Q = tank inflow and T = retention time
Septic Tank Receives: And the following formula for scum & storage capacity: B = P x N x F x S
where: B = the required sludge and scum storage capacity in liters
P = Number of people served
Rate of Sludge and Scum N = Number of years between dislodging
40 L/person/yr
Accumulation: F = Sludge digestion rate factor
S = Rate of sludge and scum accumulation (25 L/person/yr receiving only blackwater; 40 L/person/yr all wastewater)
Required Freeboard: meters 2
Minimum width (W) of 0.6m.
3
Total length = 2W (first compartment) + W (second compartment).
4
Depth of water only, not less than 1.2m (1.5m preferred) or greater than total length; Height must include additional freeboard (open space)
above water surface in tank.
