SUMMARY

Energy from Biological Sources

The main power supply of the earth is the sun, which illuminates solar radiation around
the world. Although the solar radiation is a renewable energy source, the world still has energy
crisis. The energy crisis occurs because the lack of skill to utilize the energy efficiently. Based
on the text entitled Energy from Biological Sources , the energy crisis can be resolved by
developing energy from biological resources. By advancing nowadays methods further, we can
obtain more energy from biological resources to overcome the problem.

First, developing method to gain more energy from photo-synthetic process can be
valuable to overcome the worlds energy crisis. The plants are our sources to produce
renewable quantities of food, fibre, fuel and chemicals. All energy in plants come from the
photo-synthetic cycle, therefore the scientist can do experiment to see whether this cycle can
be accelerated or even made synthetically in order to gain more energy from the process.
Furthermore, the development of this technology will surely give benefits to agriculture,
forestry and land use patterns. Second, we can gain energy from biomass with favorable cost
and produce relatively the same capacity of energy from oil-fired power stations. A study in
Philippines has proven that a 9100 hectare fuel wood plantation would supply the needs of a
75 megawatt steam power station. Moreover, the remains of the crops can be used as steam-
producing fuel to generate electricity. Third, we can use bioconversion technology to produce
liquid fuels. These liquids fuels are alcohois, ethanol and methanol. Alcohois can be produced
from fermentation process, ethanol can be extracted from waste plant material and methanol
can be produced from coal, wood or other waste products. These liquid fuels can be used for
combustion engines of vehicles and industrial application.

Based on the facts that are written above, the worlds crisis truly can be solved. By
developing the right methods to gain more energy from biological sources the deficiency of
energy in the world hopefully can be coped.
