EINLEITUNG

D i e Einwohner der K o l o n i e s t a d t A u g u s t a R a u r i c o r u m ( A u g s t bei B a -

s e l ) , des w i c h t i g s t e n r m i s c h e n H a n d e l s z e n t r u m s a m H o c h r h e i n ,
w a r e n nur z u e i n e m k l e i n e n Teil " e c h t e " , aus I t a l i e n s t a m m e n d e
R m e r . D i e g r o s s e M e h r h e i t der B e v l k e r u n g b i l d e t e n i n der S t a d t
w i e auch i m K o l o n i e g e b i e t d i e e i n h e i m i s c h e n G a l l i e r , heute auch
G a l l o r m e r g e n a n n t . S i e w a r e n d i e K i n d e r , Enkel und Urenkel der
i n u n s e r e m Land s c h o n lange a n s s s i g e n k e l t i s c h e n H e l v e t i e r und
- in der N o r d w e s t s c h w e i z - der R a u r i k e r .

M i t der r m i s c h e n H e r r s c h a f t , bei uns s e i t der Z e i t u m C h r i s t i

G e b u r t , k a m e n z a h l r e i c h e n e u a r t i g e und t e c h n i s c h berlegene B a u -
v e r f a h r e n , Gerte und bisher u n b l i c h e G e s c h i r r s o r t e n und - f o r m e n

M i t der R m e r z e i t k a m fr e i n i g e Jahrhunderte d a s aus S t e i n gebaute

H a u s ( d o m u s ) in unser L a n d . Es i s t aber s o g l e i c h z u b e t o n e n , d a s s in
der S t a d t und auf d e m Land a n f n g l i c h nach e i n h e i m i s c h e r , k e l t i s c h e r
G e w o h n h e i t e t w a gute z w e i G e n e r a t i o n e n lang d i e Huser noch aus
Holz ( i n Stnderbauweise, als Fachwerkbauten u s w . ) errichtet wur-
d e n . S e l b s t i m Sden s c h e i n t s i c h der S t e i n b a u e r s t i m 1 . J a h r h u n -
d e r t n . C h r . ganz d u r c h g e s e t z t z u h a b e n , obwohl d o r t g r o s s e Gebude
w i e T h e a t e r , T e m p e l und v o r n e h m e Wohnhuser s c h o n s e i t lngerer
Z e i t in S t e i n erbaut w a r e n . R o m b e s t a n d b i s z u m g r o s s e n S t a d t b r a n d
unter K a i s e r Nero i m Jahre 6 4 n . C h r . z u g r o s s e n T e i l e n aus H o l z -
b a u t e n . A u c h A u g s t war b i s e t w a u m 70 n . C h r . e i n e S t a d t aus H o l z .
D i e d a n a c h e r b a u t e n S t e i n h u s e r b e s a s s e n o f t e i n e n g l e i c h e n oder
h n l i c h e n G r u n d r i s s w i e ihre h l z e r n e n V o r g n g e r , w a r e n a l s o U m -
bauten.

D i e Huser w i e s e n l n g s den S t r a s s e n e i n e S u l e n h a l l e ( p o r t i c u s )
a u f , deren A r e a l zur P a r z e l l e s e l b s t g e h r t e , aber - w i e i m F a l l e der
" L a u b e n " in B e r n - a l s f f e n t l i c h e r W e g ( " g e d e c k t e s T r o t t o i r " ) fr
j e d e r m a n n o f f e n g e h a l t e n w e r d e n m u s s t e . M e h r s t c k i g e Huser w a r e n
in r m i s c h e n Grossstdten keine S e l t e n h e i t . A u c h in Augst werden
sehr v i e l e Huser z u m i n d e s t e i n o b e r e s S t o c k w e r k b e s e s s e n haben
(Bild A ) .

Z u m S t e i n h a u s m i t s e i n e n ( m i t K a l k m r t e l ) g e m r t e l t e n , in der Regel
z w e i r m i s c h e F u s s ( 6 0 c m ) d i c k e n M a u e r n g e h r t e das m i t Z i e g e l n g e -
d e c k t e D a c h , das v e r e i n z e l t b e r e i t s auf H o l z h u s e r n vorhanden g e w e s e n
s e i n m a g . D i e Z i e g e l h i e l t e n n i c h t durch N a s e n o . a . auf d e m D a c h , s o n -
d e r n w i e das s d l i c h e S t e i n d a c h vor a l l e m d u r c h ihr G e w i c h t ( e t w a 8 0 -
90 k g pro m 2 ; h e u t i g e D a c h z i e g e l w i e g e n e t w a 4 0 - 4 5 k g pro m 2 ) . D i e
H o h l z i e g e l ( 2 ) b e r d e c k t e n d i e a n e i n a n d e r s t o s s e n d e n L e i s t e n der L e i s t e n -
z i e g e l ( 1 ) s o w i e auch den F i r s t . D i e Z i e g e l in M r t e l z u b e t t e n oder
ihre Fugen d a m i t z u v e r s t r e i c h e n war offenbar e i n e s e l t e n e A u s n a h m e .
D i e s e s Z i e g e l d a c h b e s a s s nur e i n e g e r i n g e N e i g u n g v o n e t w a 40 % und
keine Dachtraufe ( B i l d B ) .

D e n Bedarf an D a c h z i e g e l n d e c k t e n in der S c h w e i z z a h l r e i c h e p r i v a t e
Z i e g e l e i e n , d i e ihre P r o d u k t e s o w e i t w i e m g l i c h auf d e m F l u s s w e g v e r -
t r i e b e n ; v o m S t a d t r a n d der z e r s t r t e n K o l o n i e s t a d t A u g u s t a R a u r i c o r u m
kennen w i r e i n i g e Z i e g e l e i e n der s p t r m i s c h e n Z e i t , d i e v o n A b t e i l u n -
gen der i m K a s t e l l K a i s e r a u g s t s t a t i o n i e r t e n L e g i o I M a r t i a ( 1 ) b e t r i e -
ben w u r d e n .

A u s s e r d e m Z i e g e l d a c h e x i s t i e r t e n n r d l i c h der A l p e n zur R m e r z e i t
w e i t e r h i n auch Dcher m i t S c h i n d e l a b d e c k u n g oder S c h i e f e r b e l a g .

N e b s t den D a c h z i e g e l n b e n t i g t e m a n an sogenannter B a u k e r a m i k vor

a l l e m T o n p l a t t e n und Tonrhren fr d i e H e i z u n g s e i n r i c h t u n g e n in Bdern
und W o h n r u m e n . In einer r m i s c h e n B a d e a n l a g e ( t h e r m a e ) w a r e n d i e
B d e n d e s W a r m b a d e s ( t e p i d a r i u m ) und des S c h w i t z b a d e s ( c a l d a r i u m ;
s u d a t o r i u m ) g e w i s s e r m a s s e n u n t e r k e l l e r t und ruhten auf k l e i n e n P f e i l e r n
aus T o n p l a t t e n ( 3 ) . D i e s e r u n t e r i r d i s c h e H o h l r a u m ( h y p o c a u s t u m )
wurde durch e i n e n E i n f e u e r u n g s k a n a l von e i n e m a u s s e r h a l b g e l e g e n e n ,
ebenfalls vertieften Heizraum beheizt ( p r a e f u r n i u m ) . Im Schwitzbad
w u r d e n auch d i e Wnde b e h e i z t , i n d e m h i e r unter d e m Verputz b e r -
a l l s e n k r e c h t l a u f e n d e R e i h e n v i e r e c k i g e r Tonrhren ( 4 ) angebracht
w a r e n , in d i e v o n u n t e n d i e h e i s s e L u f t w i e in das R h r e n s y s t e m
unserer K a c h e l f e n e i n s t r m t e und n a c h oben s t i e g ( B i l d C ) .
A u c h die Wohnrume waren manchmal hypokaustiert, d . h . m i t einer
B o d e n h e i z u n g v e r s e h e n , a l l e r d i n g s nur i m m e r w e n i g e oder nur einer
i n n e r h a l b e i n e s H a u s e s . D i e M e h r z a h l der A u g s t e r S t a d t h u s e r b e s a s s
k e i n e H y p o k a u s t a n l a g e n . M a n v e r w e n d e t e das Herdfeuer und s t e l l t e
m i t H o l z k o h l e g e f l l t e B e c k e n in d i e z u w r m e n d e n Z i m m e r .
D i e H y p o k a u s t h e i z u n g s e l b s t war vor a l l e m e i n e S p e i c h e r h e i z u n g :
der ber den P f e i l e r n l i e g e n d e Boden ( s u s p e n s u r a ) , d e s s e n u n t e r s t e
Lage g r o s s e , von P f e i l e r z u P f e i l e r r e i c h e n d e T o n p l a t t e n b i l d e t e n , s e t z t e
s i c h aus m e h r e r e n M r t e l s c h i c h t e n v o n b i s z u 50 c m D i c k e ( i ) z u s a m m e n ,
die eine grosse Wrmemenge speichern konnten.

D i e Bden der H o l z h u s e r bestanden in der R e g e l aus g e s t a m p f t e m L e h m ,

b i s w e i l e n auch aus B r e t t e r l a g e n ; s e l t e n w a r e n e s M r t e l b d e n . D i e s e
f e s t e n B d e n , d i e in den g e m a u e r t e n B a u t e n dann h u f i g e r w u r d e n , b e -
s a s s e n e i n S t e i n b e t t , auf d e m m e h r e r e Lagen K a l k m r t e l a u f g e t r a g e n
w u r d e n . M u s s t e w i e bei B a d e a n l a g e n der M r t e l b o d e n w a s s e r d i c h t s e i n ,
so wurde d e m M r t e l r e i c h l i c h Z i e g e l s c h r o t ( a u s z e r s t a m p f t e n Z i e g e l n )
beigegeben ( 5 ) .

In A u g u s t a R a u r i c o r u m k o n n t e s i c h nur d i e k l e i n e B e v l k e r u n g s s c h i c h t
der w o h l h a b e n d e n E i n w o h n e r den t e u e r s t e n F u s s b o d e n b e l a g l e i s t e n , das
M o s a i k ( o p u s m u s i v u m ) , das s e i t g r i e c h i s c h e r Z e i t i m M i t t e l m e e r r a u m
e i n b e l i e b t e r B o d e n s c h m u c k w a r . Er b e s t a n d aus k l e i n e n , in A u g s t m e i s t
e t w a gegen 1 c m 2 g r o s s e n S t e i n c h e n ( p r o m 2 M o s a i k b o d e n a l s o e t w a
1 0 ' 0 0 0 S t e i n c h e n i ) v e r s c h i e d e n e r F a r b e ; z u w e i l e n k o m m e n auch aus
G l a s - oder T o n s c h e r b e n z u g e s c h l a g e n e W r f e I c h e n v o r . In der R e g e l w u r -
de d i e s e r " T e p p i c h " aus S t e i n c h e n i n e i n e dnnere Lage aus k i t t a r t i g e m
f e i n e m K a l k m r t e l v e r l e g t , d i e i h r e r s e i t s auf e i n e m d i c k e r e n Z i e g e l m r -
t e l a u f l a g ( 6 ) ; in B d e r n ruhten d i e S t e i n c h e n d i r e k t i m w a s s e r b e s t n d i -
gen Z i e g e l s c h r o t m r t e l . D a s Ganze l a g auf e i n e m s t a r k e n S t e i n b e t t .

E i n f a c h e r f a r b i g e r W a n d v e r p u t z war i m r m i s c h e n A u g s t s i c h e r i n m a n -
chen H u s e r n a n z u t r e f f e n : W a n d m a l e r e i von guter Q u a l i t t und m i t
r e j c h e r f i g r l i c h e r D e k o r a t i o n war h i n g e g e n e b e n s o s e l t e n w i e der M o s a i k -
f u s s b o d e n und z h l t e o f f e n b a r z u den L u x u s g t e r n ; e i n e i n f a c h e s B e i s p i e l
i s t d a s B i l d der A m p h o r e n t r g e r ( B i l d D ) . E t w a s h u f i g e r s i n d g e m a l t e
W n d e m i t P f l a n z e n m o t i v e n ( G i r l a n d e n und B l u m e n ) in r e c h t e c k i g e n
Feldern ( 7 , 8 ) .
D i e zur R m e r z e i t v e r w e n d e t e n Farben waren m i n e r a l isehe F a r b p i g m e n -
te nichtorganischer Natur, z . B . Zinnober, Kupferblau, Kupfergrn, G o l d -
g e l b , B l e i w e i s s , rotes B l e i o x i d und vor a l l e m der ( a l s n a t r l i c h e F a r b -
erde v o r k o m m e n d e ) R o t e b z w . G e l b e ( g e b r a n n t e ) O c k e r ; w e i t e r e Farben
w u r d e n g e m i s c h t . O r g a n i s c h e S u b s t a n z e n k a m e n a l s B i n d e m i t t e l zur
V e r w e n d u n g . E i n e R e i b s c h s s e l ( w i e 30) und e i n e h a l b e A m p h o r e ( w i e
B i l d M ) m i t R e s t e n roter Farbe k a m e n 1965 i m S d t e i l v o n A u g u s t a
R a u r i c o r u m an der S t e l l e , wo der M a l e r oder A n s t r e i c h e r i m 2 . J a h r -
hundert n . C h r . g e a r b e i t e t h a t t e , z u m V o r s c h e i n .

W i c h t i g e T e i l e des H a u s e s w a r e n Tren und F e n s t e r , von denen s i c h

a l l e r d i n g s nur S c h w e l l e n , D r e h l c h e r , S c h l s s e r und B e s c h l g e s o w i e
A b d r c k e der T r - und F e n s t e r r a h m e n f i n d e n , d a j e g l i c h e H o l z r e s t e v e r -
gangen s i n d .

In den f f e n t l i c h e n B d e r n und auch i n r e i c h e r e n P r i v a t h u s e r n gab es

r i c h t i g e F e n s t e r s c h e i b e n aus h e l l g r n l i c h e m , d u r c h s c h e i n e n d e m G l a s
( 1 0 , 1 1 ) , d i e i n der Regel e t w a 30 x 40 c m gross w a r e n und e i n z e l n ,
z u v i e r t , z u s e c h s t u s w . in h l z e r n e n R a h m e n e i n g e l a s s e n w a r e n . M a n c h -
m a l war e s n o t w e n d i g , Fenster z u v e r g i t t e r n . D a z u v e r w e n d e t e m a n r e c h t -
w i n k l i g s i c h kreuzende E i s e n b n d e r , an deren K r e u z u n g s p u n k t e n aus e i n e m
S t c k g e s c h m i e d e t e S p i t z e n oder vi e r s t r a h l ige " S t e r n e " ( 9 ) a u f g e n i e t e t
wurden ( B i I d E ) .

Ganz besondere S o r g f a l t wurde zur R m e r z e i t auf e i n e a u s r e i c h e n d e und

b e q u e m e W a s s e r v e r s o r g u n g v e r w e n d e t . Den A n s t o s s d a z u und das n o t -
w e n d i g e t e c h n i s c h e W i s s e n brachten s i c h e r d i e R m e r aus d e m S d e n ,
w o W a s s e r k o s t b a r e r war a l s i m N o r d e n , in d i e neuen P r o v i n z e n m i t . S o -
w o h l S t d t e a l s auch Drfer und G u t s h f e e r h i e l t e n eine oder m e h r e r e u n -
t e r i r d i s c h v e r l e g t e F r i s c h w a s s e r l e i t u n g e n ( a q u a e d u e t u s ) . Fr d i e K o l o n i e -
s t a d t A u g s t w u r d e e i n 6 , 5 k m l a n g e r , innen 1,8 m hoher und 0 , 9 m b r e i -
ter g e m a u e r t e r Kanal m i t 6 0 c m d i c k e m Gewlbe ( B i l d F ) und e i n e m
d u r c h s c h n i t t l i c h e n G e f l l e von 2 %o ( d . h . von 2 c m auf 10 M e t e r i ) in d i e
Erde v e r l e g t , der o b e r h a l b v o n L i e s t a l W a s s e r aus der E r g o l z f a s s t e und
nach A u g s t f h r t e . Z u r V e r t e i l u n g i n n e r h a l b des S t a d t g e b i e t e s d i e n t e
e i n L e i t u n g s n e t z m i t Rhren aus B l e i und H o l z ( T e u c h e l ) , i n denen das
W a s s e r unter D r u c k in d i e f f e n t l i c h e n B r u n n e n , Bder u s w . , aber auch
i n d i e p r i v a t e n Huser g e l e i t e t w u r d e . D i e Rohre der B l e i l e i t u n g e n b e s t e -
hen aus l a n g e n , m e h r e r e m m d i c k e n B l e i p l a t t e n , d i e an den z u s a m m e n -
gebogenen L n g s k a n t e n z u einer i m Q u e r s c h n i t t b i r n f r m i g e n Rhre z u -
s a m m e n g e l t e t wurden ( 1 2 ) . B e r e i t s zur R m e r z e i t b e z a h l t e m a n , w i e
w i r von den a n t i k e n S c h r i f t s t e l l e r n w i s s e n , e i n e n W a s s e r z i n s , der s i c h
nach d e m Q u e r s c h n i t t ( K a l i b e r ) des A n s c h l u s s e s r i c h t e t e . V i e l e Leute
werden das Wasser an den an jeder S t r a s s e n k r e u z u n g s t e h e n d e n l a u f e n -
den Brunnen g e h o l t haben ( B i l d B ) .
L e i s t e n z i e g e l ( t e g u l a ) , m e i s t e t w a 4 5 - 5 5 x 3 0 - 4 0 c m g r o s s und
8 - 1 2 k g s c h w e r ; b i s w e i l e n , i n s b e s o n d e r e d i e in M i l i t r z i e g e l e i e n
f a b r i z i e r t e n S t c k e g e s t e m p e l t : hier e i n Z i e g e l der LEG I MR ,
d . h . der i m 4 . Jahrhundert i m K a s t e l l K a i s e r a u g s t s t a t i o n i e r t e n
L e g i o P r i m a M a r t i a . D i e L e i s t e n s i n d an den o b e r e n E c k e n der
Z i e g e l u m e t w a 5 c m g e k r z t , d i e unteren E c k e n d e m e n t s p r e -
c h e n d u m e t w a 5 c m u n t e r s c h n i t t e n (fr das U e b e r l p p e n der
n c h s t e n Z i e g e l ) . A m R a n d m i t den Fingern ( ? ) e i n g e s t r i c h e n e
Bgen.

H o h l z i e g e l ( i m b r e x ) , v o n g l e i c h e r Lnge w i e d i e L e i s t e n z i e g e l ,
nach unten e t w a s breiter w e r d e n d ( z u m U e b e r d e c k e n des n c h s t -
unteren H o h l z i e g e l s ) .

T o n p l a t t e e i n e s H y p o k a u s t p f e i l e r s ; hier m i t den P f o t e n a b d r c k e n
e i n e s D a c h s e s , der s i c h auf einer der v o m Z i eg 1er vor d e m Brennen
z u m Trocknen a u s g e l e g t e n P l a t t e n v e r e w i g t h a t .

Tonrhre ( t u b u l u s ) einer W a n d h e i z u n g , m i t w e l l e n f r m i g e n R i l l e n
an den B r e i t s e i t e n ( z u m b e s s e r e n B e f e s t i g e n d e s V e r p u t z e s ) und
v i e r e c k i g e n L c h e r n an den S c h m a l s e i t e n ( f r d i e h o r i z o n t a l e
Wrmezirkulation).

t a u c h t e r s t i n der R m e r z e i t n r d l i c h der A l p e n a u f , denn ihr Gebrauch
i s t j a auf das V o r h a n d e n s e i n , i m Norden a l s o den I m p o r t des a l s
B r e n n s t o f f v e r w e n d e t e n O e l s aus d e m Sden a n g e w i e s e n . I n t e r e s s a n -
t e r w e i s e wurde in den G r e n z p r o v i n z e n a m R h e i n und d a m i t auch i m
G e b i e t der h e u t i g e n S c h w e i z , t r o t z z u n e h m e n d e r R o m a n i si e r u n g , d i e
( g e s c h l o s s e n e ) O e l l a m p e ( 2 6 ) nach 100 n . C h r . b e r e i t s wieder a u f -
gegeben z u g u n s t e n e i n f a c h e r e r , grber g e f o r m t e r offener L a m p e n ( 2 7 )
aus weniger f e i n e m T o n , in denen T a l g oder W a c h s verbrannt w u r d e .
Der Docht lag hier in e i n e r o f f e n e n S c h n a u z e s t a t t in e i n e m B r e n n l o c h
w i e bei den g e s c h l o s s e n e n O e l l a m p e n . D a s s m a n v o m Oel z u m T a l g
b e r g i n g b z w . w o h l z u r c k k e h r t e , begrndet m a n d a m i t , d a s s der e i n -
h e i m i s c h e T a l g z w e i f e l l o s b i l l i g e r war a l s das i m p o r t i e r t e Oel . W a r u m
aber zur B l t e z e i t i m 2 . Jahrhundert gerade h i e r , an a n d e r e m aber
nicht gespart w u r d e , bleibt weiterhin u n e r k l r t .

V i e l e ( g e s c h l o s s e n e ) O e l l m p c h e n z e i g e n auf der m e i s t l e i c h t e i n g e -
dellten Oberseite ( " S p i e g e l " ) eine figrliche Darstellung ( T i e r e , M a s -
ken , A l l t a g s s z e n e n u s w . ) und werden d a r u m B i l d l a m p e n g e n a n n t . D e r -
a r t i g e L m p c h e n , deren W a n d u n g o f t nur 1-2 m m d i c k i s t , wurden in
z w e i M o d e l half t e n (fr " S p i e g e l " und " T r o g " des L m p c h e n s ) g e f o r m t
und dann vor d e m B r a n d z u s a m m e n g e f g t .

N e b s t den L m p c h e n kannte m a n n a t r l i c h w e i t e r e B e l e u c h t u n g s g e r t e ,
vor a l l e m K e r z e n , F a c k e l n und B r o n z e i a t e r n e n ( B i l d I ) ; R e s t e s o l c h e r
L a t e r n e n s i n d auch i n A u g s t g e f u n d e n w o r d e n .

S t c k f i n d e n s i c h f e i n e D r e h s p u r e n auf den E n d f l c h e n der Rhre
und lange K r a t z r i l l e n an der A u s s e n s e i t e . S i e b e w e i s e n , d a s s
d i e T r f l g e l eng an d i e K a s t e n w a n d a n g e s e t z t w a r e n und u m e t w a

B e r e i t s bei den H e l v e t i e r n und R a u r i k e r n kannte und b e n t z t e m a n s e l b s t -

v e r s t n d l i c h T o n g e s c h i r r v e r s c h i e d e n s t e r F o r m e n in grosser Z a h l ; daneben
gab es s e i t f r h e s t e r Z e i t G e f s s e und B e h l t e r aus H o l z , , v e r e i n z e l t auch
das teurere G e s c h i r r aus M e t a l l ( v o r a l l e m B r o n z e und K u p f e r ) . In s p t k e l -
tischer Z e i t hatte s i c h die Tpferscheibe durchgesetzt. Fortan wurden fast
a l l e S o r t e n des T o n g e s c h i r r s auf der S c h e i b e g e d r e h t .

M i t der R m e r z e i t nderte s i c h auch i m B e r e i c h des G e s c h i r r i n v e n t a r s

m a n c h e s : B e i m Tongeschirr wurden e t l i c h e F o r m e n der k e l t i s c h e n G e -
b r a u c h s k e r a m i k von der m e h r h e i t l i c h j a k e l t i s c h g e b l i e b e n e n B e v l k e r u n g
w e i t e r p r o d u z i e r t , m e i s t w e n i g e r e l e g a n t , aber dafr t e c h n i s c h gekonnter
und besser g e b r a n n t . B e c h e r , N p f e und S c h s s e l n w u r d e n j e t z t auf
e i n e r s c h n e l l drehenden T p f e r s c h e i b e h o c h g e z o g e n . Nur der K o c h t o p f ( 2 8 )
w u r d e w e i t e r h i n o f t von H a n d g e f o r m t . Fr m a n c h e G e f s s e , i n s b e s o n -
dere fr T p f e , gab es nun Deckel ( m i t Gr i f f knpf ) aus Ton ( 2 9 ) ;
n o c h mehr D e c k e l k n n t e n aus H o l z b e s t a n d e n h a b e n und uns d a r u m
nicht erhalten geblieben s e i n .

N e u e , aus d e m S d e n s t a m m e n d e G e f s s f o r m e n , d i e nun auch i n

G a l l i e n und in A u g s t h e r g e s t e l l t w u r d e n , w a r e n :
der e i n - oder z w e i h e n k l i g e K r u g , fr W a s s e r oder W e i n ( 3 4 ) ; d i e R e i b -
schssel ( mortar i u m = " M r s e r " ) , eine weite Schssel m i t A u s g u s s ,

Z w e c k e war d i e I n n e n s e i t e m i t k a n t i g e n S t e i n c h e n ( Q u a r z s p l i t t e r u . a . )
b e l e g t , d i e e i n e s c h m i r g e l p a p i e r h n l i c h e R e i b f l c h e b i l d e t e n . In d i e -
sen R e i b s c h s s e l n w u r d e n d i e v e r s c h i e d e n s t e n S a u c e n h e r g e s t e l l t , d i e
a l s w r z i g e , t e i l w e i s e s c h a r f e Z u g a b e n bei T i s c h i n k l e i n e n S c h l c h e n
z u den S p e i s e n g e r e i c h t w u r d e n .

T y p i s c h " r m i s c h " i s t d i e bekannte G e s c h i r r s o r t e , d i e m a n e r s t s e i t gut

i m m e r auf der D r e h s c h e i b e h e r g e s t e l l t e G e s c h i r r b e s i t z t a u s s e n und
i n n e n e i n e n r o t e n , g l n z e n d e n U e b e r z u g , m e i s t e n s von d e r a r t guter Q u a l i -
t t , d a s s er t r o t z f a s t 2000jhriger Lagerung i m B o d e n n o c h h e u t e i n t a k t
i s t . T e r r a s i g i l l a t a i s t das gute T a f e l - und E s s g e s c h i r r , d a s " P o r z e l l a n "
der R m e r z e i t . D i e h u f i g s t e n F o r m e n w a r e n T e l l e r , S c h a l e n und A u f -
t r a g s c h s s e l n ( 3 1 , 3 2 ) . H e r g e s t e l l t wurde d i e s e s G e s c h i r r z u Tausenden
in speziellen Grosstpfereien, anfnglich in Oberitalien ( u . a . A r e z z o ) ,
i m 1 . Jahrhundert in S d f r a n k r e i c h , i m 2 . und 3 . Jahrhundert i n M i t t e l - ,
O s t - und N o r d f r a n k r e i c h ; i m 3 . Jahrhundert l a g e n F a b r i k a t i o n s z e n t r e n
auch a m R h e i n ( z . B . R h e i n z a b e r n bei S p e y e r ) , in B a y e r n und i n der
Schweiz (Baden; Bern-Engehalbinsel).

T e r r a s i g i l l a t a w a r , auch w e g e n der T r a n s p o r t k o s t e n , e r h e b l i c h teurer

a l s g e w h n l i c h e s G e s c h i r r . E i n e v e r z i e r t e S c h s s e l w i e 32 k o s t e t e i m
2 . Jahrhundert 20 A s s e , d . h . e t w a s mehr a l s den T a g l o h n e i n e s S o l d a t e n
oder A r b e i t e r s . D i e s e s rote G e s c h i r r i s t a u c h nebst R e i b s c h a l e n und
g r o s s e n V o r r a t s g e f s s e n d a s e i n z i g e , das m a n i m F a l l e von R i s s e n oder
Brchen bisweilen m i t Bleihaften zu f l i c k e n pflegte.
R e i i e f v e r z i e r t e S i g i l l a t a g e f s s e w i e d i e S c h s s e l 32 f o r m t e m a n in
M o d e l I S c h s s e l n , in denen d i e D e k o r a t i o n m i t e i n z e l n e n S t e m p e l n
( P u n z e n ) aus Ton n e g a t i v in d i e Innenwandung e i n g e p r e s s t war
( B i l d K ) . N a c h d e m A n t r o c k n e n wurde der v e r z i e r t e Gefsskrper
h e r a u s g e l s t und auf der D r e h s c h e i b e m i t e i n e m S t a n d r i n g und m i t
e i n e m g l a t t e n Rand v e r s e h e n .

M a n c h e G e f s s e s i n d v o r r r T p f e r oder F a b r i k b e s i t z e r g e s t e m p e l t ( 3 1 ) .
D a n a c h und auch dank den Rei i e f d e k o r a t i o n e n , d i e d e m Z e i t g e s c h m a c k e n t -
s p r e c h e n d f a s t von J a h r z e h n t z u Jahrzehnt s i c h n d e r t e n , gehrt d i e
T e r r a s i g i l l a t a h e u t e z u den a m e x a k t e s t e n d a t i e r b a r e n F u n d k a t e g o r i e n
der R m e r z e i t . S c h o n k l e i n e F r a g m e n t e knnen d e m A r c h o l o g e n w e r t -
volle Hinweise geben.

Neben d e m originalen importierten SigiIlatageschirr erster Qualitt

gab es in v i e l e n Gegenden i m m e r auch s i g i l l a t a - h n l iche W a r e , d i e a l s
e i n h e i m i s c h e P r o d u k t e z u b i l l i g e r e n P r e i s e n v e r k a u f t w u r d e n ; auch
g l a t t e s , f e i n e r e s G e s c h i r r m i t s c h w r z l i c h e m oder r t l i c h e m U e b e r z u g
war g e s c h t z t ( 3 3 ) .

D a s T r i n k g e s c h i r r , z u d e m der H e n k e l k r u g und der Trinkbecher g e h r t e ,

b e s t a n d s e l t e n aus S i g i l l a t a . H e n k e l k r g e w a r e n aus Ton ( 3 4 ) , spter
o f t auch aus G l a s . A l s Trinkbecher b e v o r z u g t e m a n n e b s t h l z e r n e n ,
n i c h t e r h a l t e n e n S t c k e n Becher aus f e i n e m Ton oder G l a s . B e s o n d e r s
b e l i e b t w a r e n i m 2 . und 3 . Jahrhundert Becher m i t D e l l e n in der W a n d u n g ,
s o g . Faltenbecher ( 3 5 ) , d i e m a n c h m a l m i t R a n k e n oder auch m i t T r i n k -
sprchen verziert waren ( 7 0 ) .

Glasgefsse

G l a s g e f s s e w u r d e n s c h o n in v o r r m i s c h e r Z e i t v o n den A e g y p t e r n und
G r i e c h e n ( d u r c h G u s s ) h e r g e s t e l l t . G l a s i s t b e k a n n t l i c h der l t e s t e
K u n s t s t o f f der W e l t . E r s t z u B e g i n n der r m i s c h e n K a i s e r z e i t , e t w a
i n der Z e i t u m C h r i s t i G e b u r t , w u r d e d i e G l a s p f e i f e e r f u n d e n , m i t der
nun in k r z e s t e r Z e i t aus e i n e m e r h i t z t e n G l a s k l u m p e n ( d a s " K l b e l " )
e i n G l a s g e f s s g e b l a s e n w e r d e n k o n n t e . D a m i t w u r d e das G l a s g e s c h i r r
sehr s c h n e l l fr w e i t e K r e i s e e r s c h w i n g l i c h . A n f n g l i c h s c h t z t e m a n
noch f a r b i g e s G l a s , s e i t e t w a 100 n . C h r . aber vor a l l e m s o g . n a t u r f a r -
b e n e s , b l a u g r n e s und s c h l i e s s l i c h i m 3 . und 4 . Jahrhundert vor a l l e m
e n t f r b t e s , w e n n m g l i c h g l a s k l a r e s G l a s . Ganze G l a s g e f s s e k o m m e n
s e l t e n und e i g e n t l i c h nur a l s B e i g a b e n in Grbern z u m V o r s c h e i n . In
A u g s t f i n d e n wir an G l a s g e s c h i r r vor a l l e m v i e r k a n t i g e oder runde F l a -
s c h e n ( 3 6 , 3 7 ) , F l s c h c h e n s o w i e S c h a l e n ( 3 9 ) , S c h s s e l n und B e c h e r .
Dazu k o m m e n Parfumflschchen verschiedener Form ( 3 8 ) .

Amphoren

E i n e s p e z i e l l e K a t e g o r i e des G e s c h i r r s s i n d d i e A m p h o r e n . S i e w a r e n in
e r s t e r L i n i e T r a n s p o r t b e h l t e r und zwar " E i n w e g v e r p a c k u n g e n " , w u r d e n
s i e d o c h nach Verbrauch i h r e s I n h a l t s n i c h t w i e d e r i n s U r s p r u n g s l a n d
( I t a l i e n , S d f r a n k r e i c h und S p a n i e n , v e r e i n z e l t G r i e c h e n l a n d und N o r d -
a f r i k a ) z u r c k t r a n s p o r t i e r t . In s o l c h e n tnernen B e h l t n i s s e n , d i e b r i -
gens m i t K o r k v e r s c h l o s s e n und m i t P e c h oder G i p s v e r s i e g e l t w u r d e n ,
k o n n t e der in der Regel f l s s i g e I n h a l t ( s . u . ) haltbar und auch b e -
quem verhandelt w e r d e n .

f o r m e n u n t e r s c h e i d e n , d i e fr v e r s c h i e d e n e I n h a l t e v e r w e n d e t w u r d e n :

D i e W e i n a m p h o r e ( B i l d L ) i s t s c h l a n k und z e i g t u n t e n e i n e m a r k a n t e
S p i t z e , dank der s i e i m V o r r a t s r a u m e i n f a c h i n den S a n d und bei G e -
brauch i m E s s z i m m e r oder in der K c h e i n e i n n i e d r i g e s G e s t e l l e i n -
g e s t e l l t w e r d e n k o n n t e . E i n e W e i n a m p h o r e f a s s t in der R e g e l e t w a
25 - 30 I . N i c h t s e l t e n und s i c h e r bei j e d e m besseren W e i n wurde auf
d e m H a l s der A m p h o r e I n h a l t , H e r k u n f t und m i t u n t e r auch der Jahrgang
des W e i n e s in s c h w u n g v o l l e r S c h r i f t m i t s c h w a r z e r ( s e l t e n r o t e r ) F a r -
be a u f g e p i n s e l t .

D i e O e l a m p h o r e ( B i l d M ) , a l s " V e r p a c k u n g " fr O l i v e n l , i s t in der

m i t t l e r e n Kaiserzeit ein schweres, fast kugeliges Gefss m i t rundstabi-
gen H e n k e l n . D i e s e t r a g e n n i c h t s e l t e n den vor d e m B r e n n e n e i n g e -
d r c k t e n S t e m p e l des P r o d u z e n t e n oder d e s s e n V e r w a l t e r s , deren F i r -
m e n a l s i m E x p o r t t t i g e G r o s s b e t r i e b e fr den I n h a l t g l e i c h , auch d i e z u -
g e h r i g e n T r a n s p o r t b e h l t e r h e r s t e l l t e n . E i n e r der w i c h t i g s t e n O l i v e n l -
p r o d u z e n t e n i m 1 . J h . n . C h r . war G a i u s A n t o n i u s Q u i e t u s ( 4 0 ) in S d -
s p a n i e n , der vor a l l e m das R h o n e t a l und O s t f r a n k r e i c h , d i e S c h w e i z und
das R h e i n l a n d , aber auch E n g l a n d m i t O l i v e n l b e l i e f e r t e . D i e s e G e b i e -
t e v e r w e n d e t e n vor der R m e r z e i t o f f e n s i c h t l i c h k e i n O l i v e n l . W a h r s c h e i n -
l i c h nderte s i c h unter den R m e r n n i c h t nur der S p e i s e z e t t e l / sondern
auch d i e K o c h w e i s e : W i e i n unserer Z e i t s t e l l t e m a n a n s c h e i n e n d s c h o n
e i n m a l , vor f a s t 2000 J a h r e n , v o m a l t h e r g e b r a c h t e n K o c h e n m i t S c h m a l z
und Fett auf das K o c h e n und B r a t e n m i t O l i v e n l u m .

Teurer war d i e F i s c h s a u c e ( g a r u m ) ( B i l d N ) , das d r i t t e w i c h t i g e T r a n s -

p o r t g u t in A m p h o r e n , das e b e n f a l l s m e i s t e n s aus S p a n i e n s t a m m t e . D i e -
se p i k a n t e n , s t a r k s a l z h a l t i g e n F i s c h s a u c e n von den K s t e n g e b i e t e n S d -
s p a n i e n s gehrten z u den b e g e h r t e s t e n und t e u e r s t e n S a u c e n und W r z e n
der R m e r z e i t und w u r d e n fol gender m a s s e n h e r g e s t e l l t : D i e E i n g e w e i d e
k l e i n e r F i s c h e , d i e z u n i c h t s w e i t e r t a u g t e n , des garus und des s c o m b e r ,
w u r d e n e i n g e s a l z e n und m e h r e r e Tage in e i n e m o f f e n e n G e f s s der Sonne
a u s g e s e t z t . D i e herausfl i e s s e n d e B r h e , d u r c h e i n e n K o r b f i l t r i e r t , war

gestohlen werden.
D i e Tracht der R m e r z e i t war sehr v i e l f l t i g , b e h i e l t e n d o c h d i e v e r s c h i e d e -
nen ins r m i s c h e R e i c h e i n g e g l i e d e r t e n V l k e r ihre a n g e s t a m m t e Tracht
h u f i g bei oder b e r n a h m e n erst n a c h e i n i g e n G e n e r a t i o n e n und nur t e i l -
weise die reprsentative " r m i s c h e " , d . h . griechisch-rmische Kleidungsart.

Z u r K l e i d u n g der R m e r , d . h . der B e v l k e r u n g R o m s und I t a l i e n s , gehrte

d i e t u n i c a , e i n H e m d , d a s gegrtet g e t r a g e n w u r d e . B e i m M a n n e k a m , f a l l s
er das r m i s c h e Brgerrecht b e s a s s , d i e t o g a , e i n g e w i c k e l t e r M a n t e l ,
h i n z u . A u c h d i e Frauen t r u g e n ber der t u n i c a e i n e n M a n t e l , der w i e
die toga kunstvoll "drapiert" umgeschlungen wurde. Diese klassische
R m e r t r a c h t war n i r g e n d s m i t N a d e l n oder F i b e l n ( f i b u l a = S p a n g e , z u m
Z u s a m m e n h e f t e n des G e w a n d e s , s . u . ) g e h e f t e t , s o n d e r n genht ( H e m d )
b z w . u m g e s c h l u n g e n ( M a n t e l ) - und d e m e n t s p r e c h e n d auch w e n i g p r a k -
t i s c h . M a n w e i s s , dass schon die Rmer die toga als Z w a n g e m p f a n -
den und oft nur dann t r u g e n , w e n n d i e E t i k e t t e oder der A n l a s s d i e s v e r -
I engten.

In den P r o v i n z e n a m R h e i n war e i n e a n d e r e , e i n h e i m i s c h e T r a c h t b l i c h ,
von der e i n i g e T e i l e noch whrend der ganzen R m e r z e i t b e l i e b t g e b l i e -
ben s i n d . Der v o m g a l l i s c h e n M a n n e getragene p r a k t i s c h e K a p u z e n m a n -
t e l ( c u c u l l u s = K a p u z e ) berdauerte sogar d i e R m e r z e i t ( B i l d R ) , ganz
i m G e g e n s a t z e t w a zur t o g a . W i e i n der r m i s c h e n so f e h l t e n auch in der
gallischen Mnnertracht die Hosen.
D i e K l e i d u n g s s t c k e der gal I or m i sehen Frau - e i n H e m d m i t A e r m e l n ,
e i n z y l i n d r i s c h genhter und m i t Grtel getragener R o c k s o w i e e i n aus
e i n e m r e c h t e c k i g e n Tuch bestehender M a n t e l - w a r e n auf ganz " u n r m i -
s c h e " A r t m i t F i b e l n ( 5 0 , 5 1 ) v e r s c h l o s s e n : den R o c k h i e l t auf den S c h u l -
t e r n e i n F i b e l p a a r , den M a n t e l h e f t e t e e i n e e i n z e l n e Fibel auf der r e c h t e n
Schulter zusammen ( B i l d Q ) .
Z u diesen g a l l i s c h e n Kleidungsstcken gehrten a l s o die v i e l e n typischen
F i b e l n aus B r o n z e , d i e w i r aus A u g s t und a l l e n anderen R m e r o r t e n n r d -
l i c h der A l p e n kennen und e i g e n t l i c h u n r i c h t i g a l s " r m i s c h " b e z e i c h n e n .

D i e m e i s t recht s c h m a l e n Grtel w a r e n e i n f a c h v e r k n o t e t , b e i m M i l i t r

s c h e n G t t e r w e l t . M a n e r k a n n t e , d a s s v i e l e r m i s c h e G o t t h e i t e n in
i h r e m W e s e n und W i r k e n ganz oder d o c h i n v i e l e n D i n g e n k e l t i s c h e n
G t t e r n e n t s p r a c h e n und u m g e k e h r t . S o m i s c h t e n s i c h d i e b e i d e n

D i e " R a n g f o l g e " d i e s e r a m m e i s t e n gefundenen und auch a m m e i s t e n
v e r e h r t e n G o t t h e i t e n e n t s p r i c h t aufs b e s t e der oben w i e d e r g e g e b e n e n
C h a r a k t e r i s i e r u n g C a e s a r s . Wir d r f e n uns a l s o in erster L i n i e d i e e i n -
h e i m i s c h e B e v l k e r u n g , d i e j a in A u g s t w i e b e r a l l gegenber den e c h t e n

W h r e n d der K a i s e r z e i t w u r d e auch der K a i s e r a l s Gott v e r e h r t , z u e r s t

n a c h s e i n e m T o d e , spter sogar n o c h z u s e i n e n L e b z e i t e n . Der d a m i t
e n t s t e h e n d e K a i s e r k u l t , z u d e m der E i d auf den K a i s e r , Gebete und Opfer
g e h r t e n , war sehr w i c h t i g und w u r d e von e i n e m m e i s t aus h o c h g e s t e l l -
t e n A m t s p e r s o n e n b e s t e h e n d e n P r i e s t e r k o l l e g i u m g e l e i t e t , d a s T e m p e l und
A l t r e betreute und d i e v o r g e s c h r i e b e n e n F e i e r n und Opfer b e r w a c h t e .

753 v . C h r . ( G r n d u n g der S t a d t R o m ) b e g a n n .
D i e V o r d e r s e i t e der M n z e n z e i g t j e w e i l s das P o r t r t des K a i s e r s ,
m a n c h m a l auch das der K a i s e r i n oder e i n e s anderen A n g e h r i g e n des
K a i s e r h a u s e s . Die Rckseite bringt nicht selten eine D a r s t e l l u n g , die
s i c h auf e i n b e s t i m m t e s E r e i g n i s b e z i e h t ( J u b i l e n , E i n w e i h u n g e n ,
S i e g e , Geburt von T h r o n f o l g e r n u s w . ) . D i e Legenden erwhnen d i e ( i m
L a u f e der Z e i t s i c h v e r m e h r e n d e n ) E h r e n t i t e l der K a i s e r und e r l u t e r n
knapp d i e d a r g e s t e l l t e n E r e i g n i s s e . Dank den e r h a l t e n e n h i s t o r i s c h e n
