Algae Fuel As Turbine Electricity

Compact Contractors for America (CCA), a Southern Utah-based company has

developed a dry process biofuel from algae, camelina seed, and other non-fossil fuel
sources. Dry process biofuels are essentially powders that can be (fluidized) and
combusted in jet turbine engines. Dry process fuels have been around for a long time,
at least since the first pulverized coal power plants. Running engines on burnable
powders as opposed to liquid fuel is nothing new. What CCA has done is identify the
most effective feed stocks, process methodology and fuel delivery processes to make
dry process biofuels scalable to commercial and military operations.

Powdered Algae Jet Fuel Test

The advantage dry process biofuels have over liquid biofuels is a more streamlined and
less expensive preparation process. Dewatering the feedstock takes less energy, and
no catalytic “cracking” is needed to create a liquid fuel. CCA is focused initially on the
aviation market, and ground power generation for electricity.

The world is very open to finding new alternative sources of fuel that promote energy
independence with renewable fuels and CCA is focusing on that interest.

Stages

The key process stages of algae to electricity production have three key stages to
create algae electricity:

1. Algae Farming (Algae Photo-bioreactor or Algae Raceway)

2. CCA Dry Fuel Process
3. Micro Jet Turbine Power

Algae Farming ( PBR ) vs. (Raceway)

Our source of algae can be wild strains, Raceway Ponds our Photo Bioreactors. Client
project sites dictate which process is to be used. Ponds grow more algae and are less
expensive than PBR’s. However a energy project in a hot arid place such as the United
Arab Emirates may call for a PBR’s to decrease water evaporation issues.

CCA Dry Fuel Process

The Creation of Algae Fuel using CCA’s process is unlike liquid bio jet fuels that require
extensive and expensive processing, dry algae fuel is much cheaper to make.
The process is simple and easy to reproduce using raw algae that can be harvested
from a variety of sources, the higher the lipid content, the greater the energy density.
Liquid bio jet fuel requires high lipid content algae, which requires a very controlled
environment to produce. Liquid jet fuel weighs about 6.8 pounds per gallon. Dry algae
fuel weighs 48% less than liquid without any additives. The weight per gallon will vary
with the strain of algae used. Since algae grow anywhere and everywhere, we can
produce dry algae jet fuel on site at the customers’ location.

Micro Jet Turbine Power

Companies that specialize in micro turbine power and heat cogeneration systems are
the best choices to utilize CCA’s fuel for electricity. Most turbine manufacturers have
power applications of various sizes to include: 30kW, 65kW, and 200kW or higher.
Utilizing this turbine power source for combined heat, cooling and primary electricity
with provide cheaper electricity than one company can buy from the grid with a project
payback in 3-7 years.

Algae Biomass Production for Electricity

Algae as electricity is another resource derived from algal biomass.

This is not Rocket Science (here’s the layman's explanation)
Algae is a single cell organism

Algae feeds on the Hydrogen from the H2O and the Carbon from the CO2 and
through the process of photosynthesis produces Hydrocarbon Chains and releases
Oxygen. Most strains of the Green and Green-Blue Algae can double their mass
every 24hour growing cycle. Different strains of Algae produce Algae Oil with slightly
different hydrocarbon chains

Microalgae have much faster growth-rates than terrestrial crops. The per unit area
yield of oil from algae is estimated to be from between 2,000 to 20,000 gallons per
acre, per year(4.6 to 18.4 l/m2 per year); this is 7 to 30 times greater than the next
best crop, Chinese tallow (699 gallons).

Studies show that algae can produce up to 60% of their biomass in the form of oil.
Because the cells grow in aqueous suspension where they have more efficient
access to water, CO2 and dissolved nutrients, microalgae are capable of producing
large amounts of biomass and usable oil in either high rate algal ponds or photo-
bioreactors. This algal biomass can then be turned into fuel for external or internal
combustion engines. The biomass (algae cake) can be used to generate electricity
and the oil can be used for liquid fuels. Regional production of microalgae and
processing into biofuels will provide economic benefits to rural communities.

Algae seems to hold the most promise to meet many needs to include electricity
production.

Algae Desirable Characteristics:

• Easy to grow

• Grow anywhere

• High yield per acre

• Not used for Human or Animal Consumption

• Environmentally friendly

Algae remove massive amounts of CO2 (Carbon dioxide) from the air. Algae farms are
glutton eaters of CO2 gas providing a means for recycling waste carbon dioxide from
fossil fuel combustion. It is possible to sequester as much as one billion tons of CO2 per
year from algae farms. The United States has one energy plant that produces 25.3
million tons of CO2 by itself. This technology has attracted companies that need
inexpensive CO2 sequestration solutions & renewable energy solutions.

The combination of algae & turbine generators is a green way to create endless
renewable clean energy for many cities and industries.
