Report:

During the school holiday this month education and community volunteers joined
forces to design and construct a new and exciting playground for the Kindergarten
students at Navunisea District School, using largely recycled and reclaimed wood
and other materials.
As the Kindi classroom is one of the first new school buildings to be completed,
the rest of the school is still under construction for the remainder of the year,
with the area surrounding the school a worksite. One of GVI's priorities was to
build a fence around the Kindi compound so that the children were kept safely
away from the potential dangers of the ongoing construction, giving peace of
mind to their teacher when they were outside of the classroom.

With the fence in place, volunteers began constructing play equipment to engage
the children, including a playhouse, swing, tyre hop-scotch and tyre tunnel.
Community Project Leader, David, also designed a' Sound Tree' which
incorporated brightly painted recycled objects, which can be hit, flicked or
plucked by the children to create different sounds.

Outside the Kindi building, volunteers designed and painted a mural to celebrate
the opening of the new NDS Kindergarten, which is visible from the road. GVI also
constructed a shaded deck area outside, allowing the class teacher to teach small
groups outside when required. The on-site bathrooms were also decorated with
colourful and lively drawings of an 'under-the-sea' theme, with mottos such as
"Remember to wash your hands!".

After two weeks of hard work the playground was ready to be opened! The
children returned to school after their holiday and loved trying out all of the new
equipment!
