Kinematics

Problem 4
A car brakes (with constant acceleration) from 50 km/h down to 30 km/h within a distance of
80 m. How much time and what distance will it need to brake down to zero speed?

Problem 5
A factory uses trolleys to transport material between A and B. The mass of a trolley including
the material is m = 10 kg. The trolley is accelerated from zero velocity to a velocity of vmax =
18 km/h with an acceleration of a1 = 1.6 m/s2 . It then moves for 3 s with a constant velocity of
18 km/h before it is slowed down by an acceleration of a2 = 2.0 m/s2 until it comes to a stop.

a) Calculate the total time it takes to transport the trolley from A to B.

b) Calculate the distance between A and B.

c) Calculate the force required to accelerate the trolley in the first phase of this process.
(Friction and air drag can be neglected.)

Problem 6
A vehicle is rolling without motor power (and without brakes) over a flat and horizontal surface.
It starts with a velocity of 25 km/h and comes to a stop after 165 m. Find the value of the
coefficient of the rolling resistance.

Problem 7
Calculate the magnitude of the force that needs to be applied to accelerate a car with mass
m = 1100 kg standing on a slope with an inclination of 5% by 1.5 m/s2 in uphill direction. The
coefficient of the rolling resistance is = 0.15. Air drag can be neglected.
