Four Settings
DURATION: approximately 8
MOTIVATION: Four Settings captures a series of settings in Glacier National Park and was
conceived in Fall 2015. Various sonic and thematic elements represent four different locales or
environmental setting in the park.
A fundamental motivation of this piece is that listeners will individually and personally imagine
the environmental spaces evoked by the sonic elements in the piece, realizing that natural spaces
are, like music, temporal and therefore in need of temporal preservation. While these spaces
change with and may not be truly preserved from natural events, I hope listeners will think about
the need for preservation of these spaces from climactic events and human encroachment.
PROGRAM NOTES: Although there are four distinct sonic motivations in the piece, this should be
played as a single piece. The motivations (i.e., settings) are distinct to the listener but should not
by explicitly demarcated during performance.
Performers should play expressively, imbuing lines with their own motivations about natural
environments and their experiences in the outdoors, coexisting with nature.
Listeners are encouraged to close their eyes and imagine the natural environments the music
brings to their mind, meditating on the idea that these physical spaces are temporal and always
changing, both naturally and by human created means.
