Through the Writer's Eyes

In The Makers Eye, Donald Murray emphasizes the significance of revision and the

progression within this process. As mentioned by Murray, a piece of writing is never finished

(Murray 461). This is a depiction of the endless work that goes into revision. Throughout the

article, there is a stressed importance that focuses on certain elements, the subject of detachment,

direction and structure. Alongside these principles, the text urges writers to grasp an

understanding of both the draft, and how to successfully go about execution. As expressed by

Murray, Rewriting isnt virtuous...It is simply something that writers find they have to do to

discover what they have to say (459). Through the incorporation of these principles, Murray is

able to convey writing as both a structured and distinctive endeavor.

There are numerous factors that affect the writing and revision process, such as criticism;

it is communicated that the writer must learn to read critically but constructively(Murray 459).

This is essential to the revision process because writers tend to either be too protective or

discerning of their own work. In addition to criticism, writers also need to decipher their

audiences and maintain a coherent structure. Revision allows the writer to strengthen these

aspects and present a clearer argument.

While there are many factors to consider when writing, each piece is distinctive to the

writer. One of the most important points that Murray brings up is that The makers eye is never

satisfied (461). Even if writers pay close attention to each illustrated piece of advice, there is

always something that can be improved. Upon reading this article, both the reader and writer are

exposed to the efforts that go into writing. Murray provides an insiders perspective on the

process of writing and with the incorporation of principles regarding the revision process, he is

able to enlighten writers of all backgrounds.
