ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE
Probe Guide
ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE probes and ER instrument are used for measuring
metal loss due to corrosion/erosion in process applications. Corrosion of the
exposed Sample element is measured as change in its electrical resistance. The
method is usable in almost any environment, being independent of the process
properties. However ER is not recommended for use in sour service if
conductive (iron sulphide) scales are likely to be deposited. Data is usually
presented as a uniform rate of metal loss for the period of interest in mpy or
mmpy.

THE TECHNIQUE
ELECTRICAL RESISTANCE MONITORING makes An element of identical material at the same
use of the observation that the electrical resistance of temperatures as the Sample but protected from
a sample having a fixed length will vary according to corrosion is used. Resistence readings of this

readings are expressed as a ratio then changes in this

APPLICATION
A range of ER probes has been developed to meet different applications including:
KS 6000 Probes for the 2'' access system retrievable under pressure 3600 psi - 6000 psi
Probes retractable under pressure through a valve and packing gland arrangement.

1000 psi-1500 psi
Fixed probes with threaded bodies bodies 3/4'', 1'', 1-1/2'' or 2'' NPT.
L 300 Series Cannot be installed or removed under pressure. Low, medium or high pressure
applications.
Fixed probes with 3/4'' or 1'' NPT Swagelock fittings to allow variable length of insert.
L 300 Series

Operating range -400C to 2600C

ERTemp probe developed by Korosi Specindo specially for metal loss and temperature reading. ERTemp
probe are available in Tube loop, Wire loop, Tubular, Flush and Pitting configuration. ERTemp obtained in non
conductive media with accurate result and can read differences every 10 C. The operating range is -400C to
2600C. ERTemp utilizes standard 6 pin connector.

Korosi Specindo has two ER instruments which read ERTemp probe, the portable model KSHHU-ER and
Field logger/transmitter model DCI-ER.

KSHHU-ER required extension adapter for direct measurement.

When ordering these probes add an initial T at the suffix of the ER probe ordering code.

LINEAR POLARISATION
RESISTANCE
Probe Guide

General Guide KS Series Probe Information

The LPR technique allows the calculation of the corrosion current flowing
between anodic and cathodic half cells. Measurements are made by applying a
small voltage, usually between 10 and 30 millvolts, to a corroding metal
electrode and measuring the resulting current flow. The ratio of voltage to
current - the polarization resistance - is inversely proportional to the corrosion
rate.

APPLICATION

LPR monitoring provides an instantaneous LPR is most commonly used when fluctuating
measure of corrosion and is often used as a corrosion rates may be expected over short
method for optimizing corrosion inhibitor intervals and inhere data on average rates
treatments. The technique is restricted to collected over a longer period may not be
conductive solutions and the best results are sufficiently informative. For example: Cooling

A range of LPR Probe has been develop to meet different application including:
Series Description
KS600 Body mounting suitable for 2'' high pressure access fittings.
KS500 Retractable style 5/8'' body for use with packing gland.
L 300 Series Fixed length threaded bodies. NPT or BSPT male threads.
L 300 Series Adjustable length thread mounted bodies using swaged fittings NPT or BSPT.
L 300 Series Laboratory style plain bodies.

METHOD

LPR probes are configured in either 2 or 3 introducing a reference electrode adjacent to the
electrode styles. In the 2 electrode system a small test electrode in order to monitor potential in the
polarizing voltage is applied across the electrodes solution with a view to reducing the relative
and the resulting current flow is measured. The contribution of solution resistance to the series
current flow is governed by the resistence of the resistance path. Even so, 3 electrode system may

Electrical Configuration:
Korosi - LPR series probes employ a 6 pin (male) connector of the standard type MIL-C-5015 with a
shroud and extra locating pin opposite pin F1. The standard wiring is:
Auxiliary Test Reference
Two Electrode ABCD EF -
Three Electrode AB EF CD

Customer may specify other wiring configuration when ordering or specify wiring for a specific make and
model of instrument, adaptor with cross-over wiring can supplied as an alternative to specially wired
probes.

Instrumentation:
See separate data sheets for our range of LPR measuring instrument including a portable model
KSHHU-LPR and data logging DCI-LPR.

Spare Electrodes:
Projecting electrodes sets may be ordered in a wide variety of materials.

1. To calculate the order length for standard 5.25'' access fitting:

P + W + 1. 25 = Order length
Where: P = Projection of device into pipe measured from pipe ID to tip of probe
W = wall thickness of pipe in inch
Note : For Access Fitting over 5.25'' add 1 inch for each inch of additional height
Example : 8'' Schedule 80 pipe P = Sensor probe on middle of line, 4 inch
W = 0.5 inch wall thickness
Length of Projecting probe = P + W + 1.25
= 4 + 0.5 + 1.25
