STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Name: Nishant Gupta

Program: Master of Management, La Trobe University

Term: July 2017

In this era of globalization, it is essential to have a broad and distinguished international

outlook. Australia enjoys a reputation for excellent multicultural environment, highly
developed industries and education system based on technological advancement. I
therefore got influenced to acquire my higher study in the field of Management from
Australia because I believe, in such a setting I will be exposed to new skills and ideas and
also enrich my professional endurance and potential.

My name is Nishant Gupta and I live in Jalandhar, Punjab in a joint family which consist of
my parents, my sister and family of my paternal uncle. My parents run their own business of
G I Pipe Fittings and Insulator Metal Parts. My younger sister is studying Bachelor Degree in
Dental Surgery.

I completed my 10th Class in 2009, from Innocent Hearts School, Jalandhar affiliated to
C.B.S.E, New Delhi and scored 94% in 10th Class Board Examination. For scoring, above 90%,
I received Full Scholarship for my further schooling. I completed my 12th Class in 2011, from
M.G.N Public School, Jalandhar affiliated to C.B.S.E, New Delhi and scored 88% in Non-
Medical Stream. From, my childhood days, I was always fascinated with Electronic Circuits
and Devices and hence, I chose Bachelors of Technology, in Electronics and Communication
Engineering from DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology (DAVIET), Jalandhar which
is among Top Engineering Colleges in North India. As part of my course, I joined NETMAX
Technologies, Chandigarh for Six Weeks Industrial Training, where I learnt about Embedded
Systems and various micro-processors. I have also worked on PLC and SCADA, as part of Six
Months Industrial Training from Tata CMC, Chandigarh. I completed my graduation in June,
2015 with 69%.

Being from business class background I had always inclined to peruse a career as Business
Manager where I would take important decision and participate in active business activities.
So after completion of my Bachelor Degree, I started preparing for MBA entrance Exams like
CAT, SNAP, CMAT etc. I took various MBA Entrance Exams from November 2015 to January
2016. I got my CAT 2015 result in January 2016, in which I scored 94%. After that, I started
applying for various colleges and started preparing for college interviews and GD process.
From, February 2016 to May 2016, I gave college interviews and got admission letter from
several colleges like IMT Ghaziabad, LBSIM Delhi, and IMI New Delhi. I joined International
Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi in June, 2016. Once, I joined IMI, I felt that there
was lack of proper environment, which I was looking for from a Management Institute. I was
brought up in a family where I had been always taught to study for my inner growth and
satisfaction. My family never let me relate my academics to jobs only. Of course both are
related but for me, my academics were always a part of real learning and getting job was
always a secondary objective. When I joined IMI Delhi, I observed that more focus was given
on getting better scores and a job, than to learn and grow as a professional. I observed that
everyone was targeting to get a job on certain level. No one was targeting to be a CEO of
certain company or no one was targeting to do something innovative and put values in our
system.

So, I dropped out of college and joined my Family Business in July 2016. We are
Manufacturers and Exporters of GI Pipe Fittings with a turnover of 12 crores/year approx.
After, joining I found that I need a global exposure, so that, I can grow my family business
internationally. I realised that I need to have an International Degree, which will provide me
with required skills and exposure, which will help in taking family business to new heights.
Getting a chance to interact with teachers and students from all over the world and sharing
my experiences with them, and learning from theirs, will be of great value. Going to a
different country, for pursuing higher studies, is getting out of that comfort zone, and the
protected environment, that one has in his own native country, which will help me discover
myself, as I will have to find my own way out, discover new horizons, learn different
cultures, traditions and adapt to a whole new environment. An MBA graduate, should have
the know-how of business around the world, and by studying abroad, I will get that
experience. So, I decided to study, a Masters Degree in Business and Management from
abroad.

I took IELTS on 16th, Feb 2017 and got my result on 1st, March 2017 and got overall 7.5
Bands.

I started looking out for options in countries like USA, UK, and Canada but found that
Australian Education System was more suitable to me as compared to others. Apart from
TOEFL, USA Universities require high score of GMAT, which will need preparations for
another 9-10 months, which I was not ready to take, so I chose Australia Universities, which
do not require GMAT. In UK, most of management courses are of 1 year duration, which will
not provide me with required international exposure, in that shorter period. Also, Cost of
Living, while studying was much higher in USA and UK as compared to Australia. With rising
hate crimes in USA and rising terrorism in UK, Australia is the best option for me. In
Australia, every 4th person is an immigrant, so it provides a great opportunity to interact and
learn from students with diverse backgrounds and culture. Favourable Working Conditions
for international students, while studying and full support from Australian Government,
makes Australia an obvious choice.

La Trobe University, a globally recognised university and one of the largest providers of
higher education in Australia, with its focus on providing education, in accordance with ever
changing global needs, was an obvious first choice for me. With the presence of some of the
world's best researchers and getting an opportunity to work under their guidance, will be of
great value, personally as well as professionally. La Trobe students receive one of the
highest starting salaries in whole Asia Pacific Region and majority of them, find employment,
within few months after completion of course, that made choosing La Trobe easier. Since, it
is located in State's Capital, Melbourne, which is Educational as well as Financial Hub of
Australia, it will open doors for a whole number of opportunities during and after
completion of course, providing required boost for my professional career. Moreover,
Tuition Cost is lower as compared to other universities, such as Monash University,
University of Western Australia etc. Also, it offer scholarships to international students and I
have also been awarded 15% scholarship from College of Arts, Social Science and
Commerce. Hence, Studying in World Class University, Ranked in Top 500 Globally will be
proud moment, which will give me a chance to study and learn with best of creative and
independent thinkers, from around the globe.

I selected La Trobe, Master of Management course, because of its structure and unique core
subjects such as Sustainable Management & Marketing, Organizational Behavior and variety
of Elective Subjects to choose from. I think, with change in global needs towards sustainable
management, and organizations understanding their role towards society, studying the
above stated subjects will help me learn and understand the duties of a responsible leader,
how to self-assess weakness and strengths and how to work upon them. Good Work Ethics
and being a Responsible Leader have always been my top priority. This course consists of 16
subjects, with 8 core subjects and 8 electives, with 15 credit points each. Subjects like
Accounting & Finance, Principle of Economics, will help me learn and understand the very
basics of running a business, as they are the fundamentals of successful business. As my
career goal, is to take my family business to international market, studying subjects like
International Business, International Financial Management and Governance in a Globalizing
World, will provide me with all necessary knowledge and skills, required.

I hope, this course will help me to get good career opportunities not only in my home
country but anywhere else in the world. This specialized Master Degree of La Tobe would
open a world of career opportunities for me such as Project Manager, Business Analyst, Risk
Management Associate, Consultant, Strategy Consulting etc. So with these skills and
exposure, I would be able to start my career with reputed Government and Private
Organisations in any field like finance, manufacturing, supply chain management, service
industry, hospitality etc. with annual package of INR 10 -15 lacs.

At the end, I would like to state that I am aware that I would be abiding by the terms and
conditions of Australian government while studying in Australia. I am aware that I would not
be able to work part time more than 40 hrs per fortnight, during my study and I would have
to maintain my 80% attendance and 50% pass grades while studying in university. I am
aware that I would have to inform the High Commission regarding any change in my address
and contact details within 7 days during my stay in Australia. I would be maintaining my
OSHC during my stay in Australia.

At the end, I hope visa officer would be convinced with my reasons of coming to Australia
and accept my candidature for grant of student visa. Thank you so much for giving me this
opportunity to express myself.

Thanking You
Nishant Gupta
