questions come from Probability and Statistics ,Complex analysis, Linear
algebra, Calculus, Differential equations.

1. Engineering Mathematics ( 7 Days )

Grewal book has enough concepts for GATE exam, so follow the book according to GATE
syllabus and keep an eye on those topics which are not in syllabus. Try to prepare as soon as
possible and also do not forget to prepare revision notes to include formulas and concepts
wherever it is necessary.
Book Name: Higher Engineering Mathematics, Authors Name: B. S. Grewal
This book is sufficient to cover linear algebra and other topics. Examples and exercise problems
are covered in this book to practice the questions. Grewal book is famous for undergraduate
engineering mathematics courses. Book is well organized and recommended book for GATE
preparation.
Key topics: Matrix Algebra, Probability, Differentiation, and Integration
2. Aptitude ( 5 Days)
Aptitude can be prepared in less time compared to other subjects. Focus only on GATE Syllabus
and read all important topics from the following books. To know the GATE Syllabusclick
here: APTITUDE SYLLABUS.
Book Name: A Modern Approach to Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning, Authors
Name: R.S. Aggarwal
Book Name: Quantitative Aptitude For Competitive Examinations, Authors
Name: R.S. Aggarwal
3. Networks (8 days)
Textbook: Fundamentals of Electric Circuits( 5th Edition), Author: Charles K.
Alexander Matthew N. O. Sadiku.
This is an excellent book for circuits/networks. All topics for GATE are extensively covered
with solved examples explained step by step. Start with Mesh and Node analysis, and Theorems.
Then go for Transient analysis, Laplace transform method of solving RLC circuits, Resonance,
Coupled circuits and Two port networks.

Key topics: Mesh and Node analysis with Dependent sources; Thevenin, Nortan ,and Maximum
Power Transfer Theorems ; First order RC,RL circuits; Resonance(series and
parallel);Z,Y,ABCD,H parameters.
4. Signals and Systems (8 days)
Signals and systems is one of the scoring subjects for GATE. Begin with basic signals and
systems, their properties and representation. Then Spectrum of Fourier series, Fourier transform,
and Laplace transform of continuous time signals; Z-transform, DTFS, DTFT of discrete time
signals. Finally digital filters. Mostly questions in GATE are asked on the depth of understanding
of concepts which are clearly explained in the textbook .

Textbook : Signals & Systems, 2nd Edition ,Author: Alan V. Oppenheim , Alan S.Willsky ,
S.Hamid Nawab
Key topics: Convolution; Properties : Fourier transform, Laplace and Z-transform, DTFS,
DTFT; Sampling and Digital filters.
5. EDC (8 days)
The Strategy for EDC (you may feel its difficult and time taking) is: while studying a topic,
divide into small topics and just try to understand that part only. Slowly you would gain interest
and understand the whole topic.

Textbook: Semiconductor Physics and Devices, 4th Edition, Author: Donald A. Neaman,
Dhrubes Biswas
This is the best book for GATE as it explains and summarizes the concept after solved examples
.Topics like semiconductor properties, PN junction diode, MOSFET operation, MOS capacitor
clearly explained.

Key topics: Carrier concentration, Drift and Diffusion currents, Forward and reverse bias of
diode, Zener diode,Diode capacitance, MOSFET operation and characteristics.
6. Digital Electronics (6 days)
It is the simplest subject which can be scored 100% in GATE provided if you practice well.
Study the subject in sequence of the syllabus.

Textbok: Digital Logic and Computer Design, 1st Edition, Author: M. Morris Mano.
One of the best standard book for Digital logic. Combinational and Sequential circuits are
exhaustively covered.

Key topics: Logic gates, K-map reduction, adders, multiplexers, decoders, counters, registers,
ADC and DACs.
7. Control Systems (8 days)
It is also one of the scoring subjects for GATE. The questions that appear in GATE are based on
the application of the basic concepts. The best way is to solve as many problems as possible. The
textbook provides all the required for GATE with good number of examples.

Textbook: Automatic Control Systems, 9th Edition, Author: Benjamin C. Kuo

Key topics of Control Systems: Signal flow graphs, time and frequency domain specifications,
Root locus, Routh-Hurwitz criteria, Nyquist plot, Bode plot , State variable analysis.
8. Analog Circuits (10 days)
It is very important (perceived as toughest) subject for GATE. Syllabus seems vast but most of
the questions come from: Operational amplifiers, Diode circuits and applications, BJT analysis.

Textbook: Microelectronic Circuits: Theory and Applications, Author: Adel S.

Sedra, Kenneth C. Smith
This textbook comprehensively covers the entire syllabus with lot of solved examples.

Key topics: Rectifiers, Biasing and small signal analysis of BJT, OP-amp applications, feedback
amplifiers, Oscillators.
9. Communications (12 days)
This subject takes maximum time to prepare due to the vastness of the syllabus. In GATE
maximum questions are asked from: AM, FM, Random processes, PCM, Digital modulation
schemes, Information theory. The textbook is very good and everything is explained in detail
with examples.

Textbook: Principles of Communication Systems, 3rd Edition, Author: Herbert Taub ,

Donald Schilling, Goutam Saha.
Key topics: Spectrum of AM and FM, Random variable and Random process, PCM, Matched
filter, Probability of error, Bit error rate, Channel Capacity
10. Electromagnetics (10 days)
Textbook: Principles of Electromagnetics, 4th Edition, Author: Mathew N.O. Sadiku.
It is a scoring subject and Sadiku book is best for GATE preparation. Complete syllabus is in
sequence with number of solved examples.Questions in GATE are asked from: EM
waves,Transmission lines, Waveguides and antennas.
Key topics: Gausss law, Boundary conditions,Wave equations and their
properties, polarization, normal and oblique incidence, input impedance and VSWR of
transmission lines, modes and cut-off frequencies of waveguides, antenna arrays.
11. Revision (7 days)
Last phase of GATE preparation is to revise and recall the concepts. Revision is a continuous
process till the exam, and practice the tests during this time. Identify the weakness of topics and
revise when necessary. If you do not have sufficient time to prepare few topics and not important
for GATE then you may neglect them during preparation. Your confidence level begins in this
stage. To build your confidence you can do the following:

1) Revision of topics regularly

2) Practice tests
3) Discuss and participate on forums
4) Enhance your problem solving skills during the practice
