SUMMER 2017

ENGLISH LANGUAGE COURSES

2 Summer 2017
Welcome
At Oxford Summer Courses, we believe in the best. The best
teachers, the best setting and the best experiences. If you want
summer 2017 to stick in your mind while stretching and
strengthening it youve come to the right place.

We are both Oxford alumni. We set up Oxford Summer Courses

because were passionate about the University and the city
and were determined to share the magic of Oxford with the world. Were not part of the University, but
Oxford is at the heart of everything we do. It shapes what we teach, how we go about it, and where. Youll
be taught by Oxfords experienced and qualified English language teachers, youll live in Oxford college
accommodation and youll experience the world-renowned city and its rich cultural treasures.

Its not all work, though. Youll have time to meet like-minded students as you punt down the River Isis or
take in the sights of the ancient city. We eat out in our favourite Oxford restaurants every evening (except
for Fridays formal banquet in the college dining hall) so by the time you leave, youll know all about the
best Oxford has to offer. Beyond Oxford, we take trips to Shakespeare plays, English castles and music at the
Royal Albert Hall.

Since we started Oxford Summer Courses in 2010, we have welcomed over 1,500 students to Oxford. We
have grown from a small organisation to a BAC accredited provider of short courses. Every year we are
joined by a wide variety of students from all over the world. We offer a range of academic subjects alongside
English language, and across all of our subjects we keep group sizes small to maximise progress over our 2-
and 4-week courses.

There are endless opportunities to practise speaking informally with other members of staff and students, as
our English language students mix with native speakers and those on our other academic courses. Debate,
discussion and learning are not confined to the classroom. As members of a truly international cohort,
students leave us with different perspectives on the world as well as life in this historic city.

There are lots of summer schools in Oxford but we believe ours is the best because we are former Oxford
students who intimately know the city, the University and what it really means to be a student in Oxford. We
want to share our knowledge and experience with you so join us, and make summer 2017 unforgettable.

TESTIMONIALS
MARTIN CASSINELLI
2016 student from Peru
I have really enjoyed studying at Oxford Summer Courses. The style of teaching was
personalised and suited everybodys needs and catered for all abilities. The staff were
very organised, the activities were great and everything worked just as it should.
Oxford is a small city and everything is within walking distance but there is so much
important history all in one city. I enjoyed punting the most because it is a really nice
outdoor activity where you can be with friends and relax on the river.

RAVIN KOHLI
2016 student from India
I was looking for summer courses online and found Oxford Summer Courses and
was really attracted towards the course description and the fact that you get a true
experience of the Oxford University life. I loved meeting new people and learning
about their cultures, this is what really made my experience unforgettable. I really
enjoyed the method of teaching because having such small classes was really beneficial.
I had the best group leaders, they were friendly, accommodating and fun to talk to and
go out with. I really like city because it is full of traditions and lots of British history has
taken place here, and I really enjoyed visiting the most famous library in the UK, the
city is young and you meet a lot of people that are like minded. I enjoyed every activity
but punting was a really highlight once you get to grips with controlling the punt!

LORETO SIMPSON URRUTIA

2016 student for Chile
I enjoyed my time at Oxford Summer Courses more than I even expected! The
lessons challenged me and pushed me out of my comfort zone, with a fast pace and
a demand for my own motivation to study beyond the classes, which was exciting.
Studying and spending time in the buildings of Somerville college and the University
of Oxford made me feel as though I was in an intellectual environment.

english language
courses
Weve designed 2 English language courses that provide different areas of focus for students, whatever their
level and ability:

FOUNDATION ENGLISH
Suits students of all abilities who want to improve their understanding and confidence when speaking,
reading and writing the English language

INTENSIVE ENGLISH
Perfect for students looking to accelerate their understanding of the English language in the shortest
time possible

Foundation English
Open to all abilities, our Foundation English Course is perfect for students looking to improve their
understanding and confidence when speaking, reading and writing the English language.

We believe that small class sizes are key to high quality, individualised learning: in each of the 20 classes per
week, there is a maximum of 6 students. Groups are decided by ability, and a language test prior to arrival enables
us to set learning objectives and tailor your classes to your specific needs and existing skills.

Foundation English focuses not only on improving accuracy and fluency, but also making the most of Englands
rich cultural heritage. Students go on two day-trips per week, and participate in daily social and cultural activities,
such as traditional English sports, punting and tours of beautiful Oxford colleges. It is an immersive experience;
practising and honing your English language skills does not stop once you leave the classroom.

This course is open to students aged 16-17 and 18-24, with students separated by age for teaching,
accommodation and social activities.

Study Foundation English with Oxford Summer Courses and you will benefit from:
Highly personalised interactive classes of no more than 6 students. Our average class size in 2016 was 3
students, enabling you to get far greater attention from your teachers than at other Language schools.
CELTA qualified teachers with at least 5 years teaching experience; we are highly selective when
interviewing and hiring our teachers and only take the best.
More contact time per week than at other schools and in smaller classes. For Foundation English you
will receive at least 20 hours of contact time per week.
Immersion with native English speakers and Oxford University educated staff.

intensive
course
Our Intensive English Course is perfect for students who are looking to accelerate their understanding of the
English language in the shortest time possible. It focuses on maximising improvements in language fluency and
accuracy, whilst preparing students for the IELTS exam measuring English ability (recognised internationally by
6,000 organisations including universities and businesses).

The course is open to students of all abilities aged 16-17 and 18-24, with students grouped by age for teaching,
accommodation and social activities.

Students receive 25 classes per week with our TEFL qualified teachers. Small classes are a key part of the Oxford
Summer Courses philosophy, and with a maximum class size of just 6 students, progress can be tailored to
individuals. A language test prior to arrival in Oxford enables us to identify needs and set learning goals for a
personalised teaching experience. English language skills are taught and applied through project work, language
exercises, supervised homework and IELTS exam preparation.

Students also benefit from being fully immersed in the language and integrated with English speakers from
around the world. Each of our social and cultural activities, such as tours of the Oxford museums and colleges,
quizzes, and debates are an opportunity to practise your English as well as, of course, a chance to relax and make
friends from all corners of the globe.

Accommodation
Our courses are designed to allow students the chance to soak up the atmosphere of the beautiful, historic,
dreaming spires of Oxford. To enable students to make the most of their stay, all of our accommodation is
located right in the heart of the city. During your stay you will have shops, restaurants and the city itself on
your doorstep and plenty of time to explore them. All of our academic and pastoral staff are passionate about
Oxford. You will be living and studying within university buildings just like undergraduate students do. At the
same time, you will be fully supported by enthusiastic staff who delight in sharing their favourite Oxford places
and stories. On arrival, well give you an orientation tour to help you settle in.

Students will stay in high quality Oxford college accommodation; in single rooms with shared bathroom
facilities. These are the rooms used by undergraduates during term time, so you will get a true flavour of
what student life is like at one of the 38 colleges that make up the University of Oxford. In 2017, our English
Language courses will take place in Somerville College and St Edmund Hall.

Somerville College
Somerville College is known for its beautiful gardens and excellent location close to the city centre and the
trendy Jericho quarter. You will live alongside course staff whilst your teachers will visit the college to teach
you. Despite having everything on site you will also be in the centre of Oxford and have shops, restaurants
and the city itself on your doorstep and plenty of time to explore them. The rooms at Somerville are home
to undergraduates and graduates during term time and have high-speed internet, desks for working and views
over the college quadrangle. Breakfast is served in Somervilles dining hall and there is a large lawn thats
perfect for reading, working, playing frisbee or taking afternoon tea (which we enjoy twice a week).

The rooms share bathrooms and we separate genders and age groups in different blocks. There is at least one
staff member in each block who will make sure all rules are being obeyed.

St Edmund Hall
St Edmund Hall (affectionately known as Teddy Hall) is hidden away with its peaceful quadrangle and
medieval hall (the last surviving one in Oxford) occupying an excellent location close to the city centre and
the hustle and bustle of Oxford High Street. Despite having everything on site you will also be in the centre of
Oxford and have shops, restaurants and the city itself on your doorstep and plenty of time to explore them.
The rooms at St Edmund Hall are a mixture of singles and twin rooms that are home to undergraduates and
graduates during term time and have high-speed internet, desks for working and views over the dreaming
spires of Oxford.

* Please note Oxford Summer Courses is an organisation which contracts with the university for the use of facilities, but
which has no formal connection with the University of Oxford.

Welfare
Its not all about studying though. Our main concern is that youre happy and having the best summer ever.
So weve got non-academic staff on board to help you settle in and provide any support you need.

The Course Director will make sure the whole programme runs smoothly and is available if you want a chat.
Student helpers are also on hand and are local experts. Theyll be around to show you the hidden corners of
Oxford that larger groups often miss and theyll join us on extra-curricular expeditions. Theyre all Oxford-
educated too, so theyll be able to help you prepare for your lessons.

Chris Adamson
Course Director
After an MA in Classics at the University of St Andrews, Chris came to Oxford to
undertake an MPhil in Classical Archaeology, and is now in the final stages of his
DPhil, examining the role of religion and cultural memory in the formation of early
Greek states.

Chris is the Course Director for 16-24 year olds at Somerville College, having worked
with Oxford Summer Courses alongside his research for five years. He is a qualified
First Aider and is our Designated Safeguarding Lead, responsible for the welfare and
safety of the children and young people on our courses. In his spare time Chris enjoys
an eclectic range of music, is a keen supporter of Aston Villa Football Club, and runs
his colleges weekly pub quiz.

Tim Bird
Student Helper
Tim is a second year undergraduate studying Geography at St Peters College, Oxford.
His previous experience with children and young people is in the voluntary sector,
helping run Youth Groups and Holiday clubs in Oxfordshire. Tims role at Oxford
Summer Courses involves making sure that the students have a fun, engaging and
above all safe experience while they are with us. He provides pastoral care to a group
of students, helping them settle in and supporting them during their time at Oxford
Summer Courses. He accompanies students to lessons, the theatre, cinema and on
trips. He really enjoys getting to know students from a diverse range of countries and
cultures and watching students confidence grow throughout the course.
