TON Suse] OED eres OnE ou eee agWhat's wrong with our First Past
the Post (FPTP) voting system?
‘The voting system used for UK General
Elections ('FPTP”) means Parliament doesn’t
reflect how we voted and most of us don't have
4 vote that matters. In the last General Election,
2 staggering 68% of votes were ‘ested
Distorted votes
12017, 20-30% of voters said they planned to
vote tactically for someone they didn't really
"want to wi fo avoid letting in thelr least
favourite party, na democracy, voters should
always be able to vote for who they believe in.
Distorted polities
“The Conservatives and DUP recelved just 439%
ofthe vate betvieen them, but now hold a
‘majority af seats in Parlament. Meanie,
millons of voters are deprived of
representation. The Green Party Lib Dems
and UKIP received over 119% ofthe votes
(3.5m) between them, but share 2% af seats,

The solution is a system of
Proportional Representation (PR)
PRwould mean that all votes matter equally
and that seats match votes, Everyone could
vote for what they eally believe in without
wasting thelr votes.
80% of developed democracies already use
some form of PR- including all fve countries
independently assessed as being the worlg’s
bbest performing democracies.
‘All the forms of PR being advocated for the UK
keep the local link between MPs and their
constituencies. Examples of these kinds of
systems are aiready used for elections to
devolved assemblies in Northern Ireland,
‘Scotland, Wales and Landon,
When parliaments reflect the voters,
‘they make better decisions.
Political scientists have found countries with PR
perform better in a wide range of ways: greater
Income equality, etter onge-term planning and
politcal stability, fairer representation of
women and minorities higher voter turnout
better environmental laws and faster action on
imate change.
PR countries also have a significantly lower
likelihood of engaging in armed conflict -in
fact, First Past the Post isthe single strongest
institutional predictor that a democracy will 30
to war. To find out more got:

Most people want PR!
Every independent poll since 2015 has found
that a large majority of people support PR. A
recent poll found that 679 think seats should
match votes, with ust 129 opposed.
Here's how we'll win PR
If we're going to fh our democracy, we need
You and thousands of ethers to get involved.
We all need to make fixing our broken
‘emacracy a key political issue. Local groups all
‘over the country are taking action in their
‘communities: talking to the publi, holding
public meetings ancl lobbying their MPS.
\We need to bring together all the partis,
‘organisations and public figures who want PR
to work together. The PR Alliance already
includes many parties, democracy
organisations, and celebrities like Brian Eno,
Carey Mulligan, Frankle Boyle, Nigel Farage and
Zoe Wiliams,
We also need to persuade one of the two
biggest parties to back fair votes. Many senior
Figures in Labour and even some Conservatives
Support PR. With public pressure end through
the democratic processes of these partes, we
‘need to help them win this debate.
Allof this depends on volunteers taking
‘action in their communities and helping
‘organise the national campaign
