Guiding Question Activity- Unit 2 Geosphere and Global Energy Budget

Guiding Question- The Rock Cycle comprises a series of changes in rock. What does a change
mean1 and what are the different ways we can understand2 and measure these changes?3

Part 1- On your own document work with shoulder partner

We are going to practice attending to the prompt. Using the guiding question above in 5 minutes,
Id like you to do the following:
1. Underline only the words/phrases that need to be addressed in your answer.
2. After, use the superscript function to number each part of the question that needs to be
addressed in your answer and to help you remember what order to discuss them in.

**Example- Before he became the king of Sindria, Sinbad was a poor boy born to a wounded
soldier-turned-fisherman in Parthevia, a kingdom perpetually at war. After witnessing the
cruel treatment his father received, young Sinbad vowed to create a world without war. How
does Sinbad start his journey1 and where does it end2? How do his friends3 and enemies4
impact his quest(3-4)?

3. In 20 minutes, make an outline defining what you know about the topics to be
addressed in your answer.

1. A change is where an object has a certain chemical makeup, and then is broken down
and reassembled into the same chemical ingredients, but with a different chemical
makeup. For example, in the rock cycle many different types of rocks are broken down
due to certain variables and reformed into a rock with a new chemical makeup, made
from the same molecules as the original. There are also changes within states of
matter, such as liquids and solids due to temperature. Time can also wear down the
half-life of elements, causing new changes underground.

2. We can understand these changes by first understanding the variables of the changes.
These include time, pressure, and temperature. Each of these has their own effect on
the changes in the rock cycle. For example pressure and temperature as well as time
can force the layers of rock to break down and be reassembled. Pressure can also
move layers of rock to different and new areas, causing two new materials to be
introduced, possibly resulting in a chemical reaction.

3. We can measure those changes through work and power. With the calculations for
work and power, we can measure these changes from variables described above, such
as pressure and time. Understanding how work, force, and power is crucial in how
change takes place.

**Example-
1. Start of Journey- Yunan decides to guide Sinbad and instructs him to challenge the Dungeon
"Baal", defeats Drakon in battle, conquers Baal and gains the allegiance of the Djinn residing
there, becomes the first ever Dungeon Capturer.
2. Where does it end-
3. Friends impacting quest-
4. Enemies impacting quest-
Part 2- By yourself on your own document

Using your outline, methodically answer the guiding question using a series of CERs! You should
expect that your answer will be -1 full page. This means you should have at minimum:
1. Introduction paragraph- CER to provide a general answer to the question.
2. Supporting paragraphs- CER for each topic defined in your outline.
3. Conclusion paragraph- CER to conclude your answer
Intro:

Change is crucial in understanding how the rock cycle works because the entire rock cycle

revolves around change and types of change. This is clear from how the separation of mixtures,

pressure, and phase change effect how forms of rock behave. I dont know very much about how

the rock cycles actually work and what they do, but I can understand that without change the

system would crumble.

What is change:

Change is perhaps what the entire rock cycle revolves around. This is evident when examples of

change are shown throughout the entirety of the rock cycle. There are many different forms of

change, some of which are more common than others. A few examples of these are separation,

pressure, and phase change. In the case of phase change, the state of matter is manipulated and

changed into a new state of matter.

Measurable:

Measuring change is very important when it comes to understanding change. This is shown when

we attempt understanding, and we require the knowledge of how to measure in order to gain

deeper understanding of change and to make connections. A good example of measuring change is

using chromatography, which measures separation of a mixture. This separates the components of

a mixture onto a paper, which can be helpful in determining the properties of the mixture. This can

also be applied to the rock system when the components of a rock are separated due to things such

as pressure or heat.
Understanding:

Understanding changes in the earth is an important part of applying it to the real world. If we

didnt know the properties of igneous rock then we wouldnt use it for what we use it for today.

Understanding physical and chemical properties can be used for making alloys/mixtures of

different things to combine properties. For example, the difference between Vanadium steel and

mild steel is that Vanadium steel is stronger, physical property, and less reactive, chemical

property. If we didnt understand the properties of vanadium then we wouldnt be able to use it

today in making alloys and mixtures. Some elements by itself do not have a big use but when it is

combined with another element then it might have a use. To do this we have to be able to

understand the properties of the elements to combine them and use them for commercial use.

Conclusion:

Change and how we can measure it is very important in understanding the rock cycle. Matter

cannot be created from scratch, nor completely destroyed. This means that the rocks only have one

other option: to change. With a more solid understanding of change, I can better understand the

basis for how change works.
