Meet the States: Largest States by Area
The three biggest states by area (the amount of space they take
up) are Alaska, Texas, and California. Together, they make up about
28% of the entire United States! Read about each state below.

Alaska - 665, 384

square miles

Alaska is the 49th state.

About 738,500 people live
there - it's the state
with the 3rd smallest
population (number of
people living there.) With
so much space and so
few people, there
are fewer than 2
people for every
square mile of land in Alaska! About 40% of the population
of Alaska lives in or around the city of Anchorage. Alaska
is the most northern and the mostwestern state in the
United States. Over 4,000 people live in Barrow,
a city on the very north end of Alaska, above
the Arctic Circle. A little over 300 people live in
Adak, which is the most western city in the
United States. Alaska has the highest point in the
United States - a mountain named Denali, which is
20,310 feet high. In Alaska, there are over three
million lakes, and about 2,670 islands with names.
Texas - 268,581
Square Miles

Texas is the second largest state, both in

size and in number of people living there.
Even though it's a huge state, two Texases could
fit inside Alaska. There are about 27,500,000
people living in Texas. The city with the largest population is
Houston, with about 2,300,000 people living there. However,
over 7,100,000 people live in the area that contains Dallas, Fort
Worth, and Arlington. There are about 105 people for every
square mile in Texas. The tallest point in Texas is Guadalupe Peak,
which is 8,751 feet high. The lowest point is Texas is the Gulf of
Mexico, which is at sea level.

California - 163,696
Square Miles

California is the third largest state by area, but has

the largest number of people of any state. Over 39
million people live in California! One California would take up
about 60% of Texas. Four Californias would fit inside Alaska!
Los Angeles is the most populated city in California, with
almost 4 million people. San Diego and San Jose also have over
a million people each. There are about 240 people for every
square mile in California. The tallest point in California is Mount
Whitney, which is 14,505 feet high. The lowest point is Badwater
Basin in Death Valley, which is 282 feet below sea level.
California has 840 miles of coastlines - that's a lot of beaches!

Reading: Meet Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born February 12th, 1809, in Hodgenville,

Kentucky. His parents were Thomas and Nancy. They moved
from Kentucky to Indiana because Kentucky was a slave state,
and his family was anti-slavery. Abraham had a brother, Thomas,
who died as a baby, and a sister named Sarah. Abrahams father
worked as a farmer. Nancy died when Abraham was nine. His
father was remarried to a woman named Sarah.

Abraham spent very little time in school, but loved to read and
write on his own. Almost everything he knew, he taught himself
from books. He was known for being strong, athletic, and a tough
wrestler. When Abraham was a young adult, he followed his
family to Illinois. Eventually, Abraham married Mary Todd. They had
four sons: Robert, Edward, Willie, and Tad.

Abraham spent some time working on flatboats and traveling

around the Midwest and the South. He also owned
and ran a small store, and served on the Illinois State
Legislature. Abraham studied law by reading and
watching other lawyers.

Lincoln ran for the United States Senate

twice, and won the second time. He
represented Illinois in the Senate. He was
running because he was against the
Kansas-Nebraska Act, which would allow new
states and territories to allow slavery. During his
Senate runs, Lincoln often had debates with Stephen
Douglas, another Senator who was in favor of
slavery. These debates became famous, and many
day 1
people learned a lot from both Lincoln and Douglas about slavery.

Lincoln was elected president in 1860. After his election, slave

states in the South began seceding leaving the United States to
form a new country, the Confederate States of America.
Fighting broke out between the North and the South, which began
the Civil War. It was a long and bloody war, which left thousands
dead in the North and the South. Lincoln signed the Emancipation
Proclamation in 1863, which declared that all slaves in the South
were free. The Civil War ended in 1865, and Lincoln dedicated his
time to uniting and rebuilding the country.

Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed on April 14th, 1865, by John
Wilkes Booth.
