1. (a) State and explain compensation theorem.


(b) In the network shown in figure 1, find the value of ZL so that the power
transfer from the source is maximum. Also find P max . [8+8]

2. (a) Explain the procedure for obtaining fundamental tie-set matrix of a given
network.
(b) Draw the oriented graph of the network shown in figure 2 and write the inci-
dence matrix. [6+10]

resistance and reactance of each phase.
(b) Calculate the total power input and readings of the two wattmeters connected
to measure power in a three-phase balanced load, if the reactive power input
is 15 KVAR and the load p.f is 0.8. [8+8]

4. (a) In an R L C series circuit, if w 1 and w2 are two frequencies at which the


magnitude of the current is the same and if wr is the resonant frequency,
prove that w r2 = w1 w2
(b) Find the values of RL and RC in the circuit shown in figure 3 in order for the
circuit to resonate at all frequencies. Derive the formula used. [6+10]

5. A 20F capacitor is connected in series with a 1.2M resistor. This series combi-
nation is connected across a 120V dc supply. Calculate

(a) The time constant of the circuit


(b) The initial value of the charging current
(c) The initial rate of rise of voltage across the capacitor.
(d) The voltage across the capacitor after of a time equal to the time constant
(e) The circuit current after a time equal to the time constant.
(f) The voltage across the capacitor after 4 sec after switch on.
(g) The time taken by the capacitor voltage to reach 70V. [16]

6. (a) Explain the Faradays laws of electromagnetic induction.


(b) A cast steel ring has a circular cross section with 3cm in diameter and a mean
circumference of 80cm. The ring is uniformly wound with 600 turns.
i. Estimate the current required to produce a flux of 0.5 Wb in the ring.
ii. If a saw cut of 2mm wide is made in the ring, find approximately the flux
produced by the current found in (i).
iii. Find the current value which will give the same flux as in (i). Assume the
gap density to be the same as in the iron and neglect fringing. [6+10]
