Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
Christ in mouth of friend and stranger.
TRADITIONAL WORSHIP
When you think about it, the truth that the Creator
of the universe and of all that was, is, or ever will
be would condescend to take the flesh of a human
being and actually become a man is something no one
could ever have imagined. Not only that, but this God
Incarnate, Jesus Christ, also chose to communicate
with people in ways they could understand about the
purpose of His coming to this earth. The text of the
closing hymn, I Cannot Tell, is new to all of us, but the
tune is the familiar Irish melody, O Danny Boy. It is
thoughtfully constructed, in that the first half of each
verse confesses human frailty in understanding how
God has acted both in the past and what the future
holds. The second half of each verse then states with
the repeating, But this I know about this Savior.
The life of Jesus is described from His time in heaven
before coming to earth, all the way to the end of the
age when the Savior of the world is King! The author,
William Fullerton, has used parallel melodies to
contrast the I cannot tell with the but this I know
in giving us a powerful hymn reflecting the truth of the
centrality of Jesus Christ, Solus Christus!

500 years of reformation

Our Art Nouveau treatment of the Reformation sermon
series was inspired by the original Luther rose woodcut,
a seal designed for Martin Luther in the 1520s containing
a flower with five petals; as well as the integral role of
the printing press in the spread of Reformation ideas.
Thoroughly different from the austere interpretations of
Luthers time, the Art Nouveau movement (1890-1910)
nevertheless reflects a similar spirit: like the transformation
in religious art sparked by the Reformation, the Art
Nouveau movement sought to abolish the traditional
hierarchy of the arts, and recall the value of workmanship.

Each week we will feature a different design treatment of

one Sola: this week's, Solus Christus, features three roses,
representing the Trinity, with the "Christ alone" rose at the
center and the symbol for the trinity between the three.
The Scripture in the background is John 1:29-34, John's
testimony of Jesus Christ alone.
