Wrapping Things Up: Taking

Averages

The RX 570 pushed total system consumption to

almost 300 watts which is still manageable despite the
fact that the same system with the 1060 consumed
almost 20% less power.

The RX 570 ended up delivering just a single extra

frame on average at 1080p and surprisingly just two
extra frames at 1440p. That said, the graph above
includes the results for Resident Evil 7, but that title

was a massive outlier. Take a look:

Index

If we include all the results this is what the overall

picture looks like. As you can see it's pretty even
across the board until you throw in the one game
where the GTX 1060 3GB tanked. We didn't see any
other situation where the RX 570 provided playable
performance while the GTX 1060 3GB failed.

I'm keen to see just how much you have to downgrade

the quality settings before the 1060 recovers but that
will have to wait until after Computex.

For now, if we remove Resident Evil 7, the RX 570

actually ends up being 2% slower overall but to be fair
the results are still quite even. The RX 570 was faster

single title. As we often find, there's no clear winner

here and it simply boils down to the games you plan to
play.

Each card has its strengths and weaknesses. The GTX

Index
1060 3GB's greatest weakness is its the limited
memory buffer, but to be fair this is rarely an issue at
1080p. As a brief tangent, the 3GB model was released
269
almost a year ago and back then we heard how it was
dead on arrival, even for those gaming at 1080p. Well,
with the exception of one game, we have 28 examples
that show the 3GB 1060 providing quite playable
performance at 1080p, particularly in relation to the RX
570. If you bought a 3GB model last year, you're
probably wondering what all the fuss was about.

The GTX 1060 offers considerably better power

consumption, more overclocking headroom and cooler
operating temperatures, while the RX 570 offers strong
performance across the board with a slightly larger
VRAM buffer that can help keep it out of trouble and
the ability to be paired with a FreeSync monitor.

Which one would I go with? It would truly come down to

which one was cheapest and again, the games that I
intended on playing. That said, I feel like the RX 570 is
the safer bet, but I also really like the low power
consumption of the GTX 1060 3GB which generally
allows for cooler and quieter board partner cards.
These attributes may also make the GTX 1060 a better
pairing for budget builds with lower quality power
supplies.

Basing your decision on which one I would pick isn't a

wise choice here. If you have a FreeSync capable
monitor or see yourself getting one then the RX 570 is
Index
an obvious choice, while if your monitor doesn't support
an adaptive sync technology and you tend to play
games that favor the green team, then the GTX 1060
269
seems like a smarter choice. In the end, you'll have to
pick the "winner" that best suits your own
circumstances, though the heap of data included here
should help you make the right decision.

Great article. I liked it. I dont always read these but

was interested in the difference between these
mainstream cards. I use a 1070 but its good to see
where the 1060 3gb lies. Not a bad card for those
using 1080p.

Im not AMD fan, probably never will be but the 570

n 580 seem good for those at 1080p. Even at 1440
for some games.

A very interesting article and thanks for posting it. I

AMD's current drivers have lower CPU overhead

compared to NVIDIA. I tested this personally a

AMD card CPU utilization was nearly 10% lower

Nice solid review.

As for those that have questions:

Index
-- blithely stating "the test results don't match
results that I've seen elsewhere" without providing
links to said tests means you're really only giving
your personal opinion...& that & $5 will get you a 269
cup of coffee at Starbucks.
-- Those stating the RX 570 isn't in stock anywhere
apparently aren't looking in the right places.
PCPartPicker shows 10 different versions of the RX
570 available
(https://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-
card/#c=392&sor
=price) from 5 separate manufacturers in the USA
alone.
-- As far as price vs. performance, we've been here
before. When the GTX 1060 (6GB model) & RX
480 first came out, the GTX card had slightly better
performance (~10%), but its MSRP was much
higher (~25%). So as long as the RX 480 was at
least 10% cheaper than the GTX 1060, you could
safely buy it with the assurance that you were
getting your money's worth. And now, we have the
GTX 1060 (3GB model) providing ~2% more
performance, but costing ~10% more -- the MSI
GTX 1060 in the review running at $216.99 USD
while the Gigabyte RX 570 Aorus model running at
$196.99 USD
(https://pcpartpicker.com/products/video-
card/#c=378,392&
sort=price&m=18,27). So again, if you're looking for
performance in a specific game, you can pick
whichever card performs better, while being safe in
the knowledge that (except for RE7) you're not
losing performance or wasting your cash with either
choice.

Starbucks coffee though is not that expensive,
averaging around $2.10 per cup.

Some people don't live and die by the 269

price/performance ratio though. Even if you do
dedicated shoppers can find a deal to get either
card around the same price or can take an amazing
deal on a specific card and save a ton of money. If
price is your sole determination there will be an
amazing deal if one waits for it. (For example I
grabbed a MSI 6gb GTX 1060 Gaming X for slightly
above $200 when RX 480 8GB were $230-250.)

In general if the difference in price isn't too big I

would go for the RX 570. The option to buy a cheap
Freesync monitor trumps anything else and the
extra VRAM and async support are also a nice
bonus since I don't usually upgrade the PC every
year like some "enthusiasts" do.

HP/amd can?

huge improvements with that type of cpu power and
