About the Book
Conventionally employed by a large number of environmentalists
the world over, the concept of ecosystem is fraught with danger to address
and operationalize environmental issues. It is well nigh impossible to
define ecosystems because of the arbitrariness, imprecision and
variability over time of the location of ecosystems on the landscapes. A
large number of workers agree that ecosystem management is a complex
and often confusing concept that is not fully understood. In fact,
ecosystem management means different things to different people across
the society. For these and many other reasons Fitzsimmons concluded that
the jumbled nature of the concept was not a reasonable basis for “guiding
environmental and natural resource public policies.”
In this reasonably puzzling backdrop we feel that Environmental
Hydrology — many aspects of which manifest in hydrological cycle — is
likely to be a more potent and sensitive natural tool through which the
environmental degradation can be perceived and monitored at different
scales ranging from common day to day observations to precise scientific
measurements. We are convinced that the most daunting task of
environmental regeneration the country is faced with is increasing the
base flow of the rivers in general and those of the Indogangetic system in
particular. However, the work being carried out in this discipline by
various scientists is conducted in isolation and is largely fragmented,
Thus it is time to provide acommon platform to bring together the various
types of works and make them accessible to the stakeholders of the
development planning, viz. scientists, planners, builders and
administrators.
In view of the salience of the issue, we have tried to bring together
the scientific know how available in the field in the form of the present
volume. This volume comprises 15 research papers covering different
aspects of environmental management.
We hope that this volume would prove useful for students and
researchers in the fields of hydrology, hydrogeology, engineering,
environmental decision making, planning in the area of water resources
development in particular and for environmental management in general.
