Goal/Objective
When to use this strategy
Step by step instruction- How to use this in a
Science/Chemistry) classroom. Student will be
given instructions (likely a lab) and express both
what they can gather from it and what the direct
instructions are to them. For teacher it will work
well after the lab in recap, for student it will work
well before.
Assessment- How could this strategy be used to
evaluate student learning?
Intellectual Disability
Assistant Method: While it would be amazing to
have one assistant accomplish everything it might
not be feasible. So the goal is to find the amount
of helpers the student needs with them for their
different areas. Example; A teacher patiently
running through spelling with them or the same
teacher cruising through some mathematics.
Basically anyone willing to be patient enough and
give the student the support and time they need.
Depending on the scenario, environment, and
outside interactions, this method could be
incorporated in class, it could be spent in extra
time after or before classes, it could be in tandem
with standard classes, and it can even be at
personal times. Basically however best to make
both the parents and students feel comfortable.
This is tough to put into steps, so Ill more or less
provide a list of where and why.
1. Science is a heavy topic, even for those
who dont have disabilities, so just as
teachers have patience with students like
me in my school years, they need to have
the same, if not more, for students with
disabilities.
2. Students having issues with lab can be
assisted directly by a teacher or assistant.
Explaining how things progress, why
something is done, and any other asset
they think they need to explain to
someone who might not be grasping
everything.
3. For homeworks, they can be given
problems tailored to their strengths and
weaknesses and then assisted through
them by the teacher. If they struggle with
memory help them drill in the element
names, if they struggle with processes go
through basic formulas, and if they dont
quite make all the right connections, you
could even just sit down with them and
have a chat about it.
The teacher/assistant will be working directly
with the student, so it will be clear what level of
learning the student is at. The standard
classroom should give a good standing on a
general scale for the students and where they
struggle or succeed whereas working with them
 in those areas will give a more detailed idea of
how well they are progressing in relation to
timeframes. If the student is taken out of class
the assessment can be done in comparison to
works completed and concepts understood. If
done in class then the comparison can be made
side by side.
