A Peek at this Week
Math - We are beginning the next topic in math. This topic focuses on multiplying 2-digit
numbers by 2-digit numbers. We will continue to learn various strategies to determine the
answer. The strategies will include using box/array model, partial products, distributive
property, and standard algorithm. Any extra practice with algorithm at home will certainly
help with fact fluency. We will continue to incorporate multi-step word problems within the
content.
The students will come home next week with directions to a new game to study math facts at
home.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.4.NBT.B.5
Multiply two 2-digit numbers, using strategies based on place value and the properties of
operations. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays,
and/or area models.

Reading: As we continue our reading challenge in the genre of nonfiction, we turn our
attention to main idea and supporting details, as well as using that information to
summarize. Identifying text structure (problem solution, cause & effect, description,
chronological, compare/contrast) can help students understand the texts main idea better.
We will be working on this also!

Nonfiction Reading Challenge:

Each student is required to read AT LEAST 10 nonfiction books and log them using the form on
Google Classroom (10 pts. X 10 = 100 pts Informal Grade)
There are 5 different categories that are required (animal, place, biography, related to
nature, how-to). After those requirements are filled, students can read books of any
category.
For each book, they should create a slide that follows the requirements of main idea and
supporting details. I am conferring with students about their writing on these slides.

Writing: We will wrap up our realistic fiction writing this week. Students have been working
hard on planning their story. Good writers dont just sit down and write, they use strategies
to plan a good story, then they develop a draft. Your child may or may not have a draft
completed by the end of this week, and that is ok!

Social Studies: (Week 7) Students will learn about differences and similarities among four
tribes of the Algonquian nation. Students will learn the unique traditions and characteristics
of the Catawba, Tuscarora, Chowanoc and Waxhaw tribes. They will also learn how each of
these tribes interacted with the early European settlers.

Science: Students will continue their study of force and motion through circuits. We will have
a quiz on Monday, October 23rd on what students have learned about magnets so far. They
will then explore simple circuits, conductors and insulators, and series circuits. Students will
have a quiz on circuits on Wednesday, November 1st. We will then have a unit review and our
unit test on Force and Motion (magnets and circuits) on Friday, November 3rd.
