Dear Readers,

After examining the basis of the human system, the Muladhara, in last months
Lead Article, in this issue, we move on to Swadhishthana The Abode of
the Self. Sadhguru describes the many ways in which one can work with the
Swadhishthana, and the abundant fruits it can bear. The Swadhishthana is the
seat of sexuality at the same time, it holds the possibility to go beyond the
sex drive.

How to deal with those who express their sexual urge in the lowest way through
brutal rape? This is just one of the questions that were thrown at Sadhguru
at NDTVs Off The Cuff talk show with Shekhar Gupta. In excerpts from this
session, our In Conversation with the Mystic article From Capital Crime to the
Divine includes Sadhgurus views on hot topics of public discourse, like capital

From Capital Crime to the Divine
Shekar Gupta in Conversation with Sadhguru
Sadhguru recently was on NDTVs talk show Off The Cuff, in which journalist Shekar Gupta interviews
prominent personalities. Here is an excerpt from the Q&A segment, where members of the audience
got the opportunity to pose their questions to Sadhguru, ranging from current social topics to timeless
spiritual matters.
Is Capital Punishment Justified?
Questioner: Sadhguru, my first question is, do
you believe that rapists and terrorists should
be hanged? Should there be capital punishment
for them? And secondly, homosexuality is still
criminalized in this country. Do you think that law
should be changed?
Sadhguru: The laws in any nation are made at
certain times of its growth and its evolution.
Right now, when the nation is continuously being
threatened by terrorist action and the sovereignty
of the nation itself is under threat in many places,
we need stringent laws. Fundamentally, am I for
legal killing? Im not for killing of any kind. Whether
you kill an ant or a human being, I dont like it. But
without killing, you are not able to exist. So, at
least please minimize it; dont do it beyond what
is needed.
Shekar Gupta: And not extra-judicially.
Sadhguru: That is not even in question. Any kind of

killing even that of an ant, an insect, or a worm
should be only to the minimum extent necessary,
not beyond that. This planet is not only made for
you and me. Every other creature is here to serve
us is the most retrograde idea that has entered
human mind. Other creatures also have a complete
life of their own. I have spent so much time in the
jungles of southern India. If you observe birds
and animals and other creatures, you will see the
level of organization and involvement they have
in their lives. They are not here to serve us they
are here to live their lives. An ant does not think it
is an insignificant life. An ant thinks it is the most
significant life on this planet.
Having said that, we need to consider that the
nation is on a certain level of evolution. Trying
to transplant laws from nations that are in a
completely different state may not work for
our country. Its very easy to say, Ban capital
punishment. But think of the families of victims
who have seen unimaginable levels of brutality,
how they will feel if that man walks free. Especially
for a terrorist, capital punishment is not a deterrent,

because he wants to die. A man who wants to die
you have to help him.
Shekar Gupta: What about rapists?
Sadhguru: They have already made this distinction
in the country, that capital punishment is reserved
for rare cases. I think we should keep it for now,
but I dont think it should be a permanent law. As
we evolve as a society, as such situations become
less and less, then we can say, Okay, we can feed
him and keep him in the prison. But right now, I
think capital punishment is necessary in certain
cases. At the same time, there is another aspect
to threatening rapists with capital punishment.
Generally, the only witness to the rape is the victim.
The trend could become not to leave her alive. This
is the danger. So, threatening them too much with
capital punishment, or as they are saying on the
news channels, We have to hang him, we have to
castrate him, this must go. Such things must be
handled through the process of law.
Please, I want you to listen to this carefully. Do
not jump into conclusions. Im not condoning
anything. All Im saying is we must understand we
are a society in transition. There was a time when a
girl would get married at the age of fourteen and a
boy at the age of seventeen-eighteen. Lets face it
there are hormonal drives in almost every human
being, unless they have transcended that and
gotten out of such things in their lives. By getting
married, the matter was kind of settled. Now,
because of the education process and individual
aspirations, on an average, girls in India are getting
married at twenty-two, boys are getting married at
twenty-six. A whole lot of them are leaving their
rural environment and moving to big cities like
Mumbai.
Imagine a guy who just moved from some remote
place in the country to Mumbai. You will thrash him,
but suppose he finds a job. Where is he going to get
married? If he lived in the community, his parents,
his uncles and aunts, all these people would work
to see that he gets married. This is about handling
fundamental human needs. Societies are driven
by human needs. Now, he lands up in the city.
Where does his sexual drive go? Where does it find
expression?
We need to have an open debate. Are we ready
for pre-marital engagement, or do we want to get

married at fourteen-fifteen? But we dont even want
to talk about that. We only want to hang the rapist.
This is not going to work. He is also a victim of the
times. He doesnt know how to handle himself. I
certainly do not approve of rape, but have you
created an atmosphere where you will turn every
young man into a sage? No. Have you provided him
an outlet? No. You think if you close your eyes, it
gets handled. It doesnt get handled. It is finding
expression in ugly ways.
So, we need to look at this situation. Either we
consciously transit with a minimum amount of
aberration, or it will happen in compulsive or
clandestine ways. Even today, Im sure even in
reasonably well-to-do homes, they will handle
hormonal issues of a boy or a girl in a clandestine
way, not openly, because were still not willing to
face human biology as it is. We need to do that.
Any kind of killing even that of an ant, an insect,
or a worm should be only to the minimum
extent necessary, not beyond that.
Shekar Gupta: And the other question about
the Section 377 of the IPC, which criminalizes
homosexuality?
Sadhguru: See, we inherited a whole lot of laws
from the British. This law came from the British
Buggery Act. What I think about it? I think this also
needs a debate not protests on the street, not
trying to make sexual orientation an identity for a
human being that should not happen, though it
unfortunately does happen. What someone does in
the bedroom is never my business. I never see it as
my business.
Shekar Gupta: And it should not be the states
business either.
Sadhguru: The state will not know either, unless
you want to display it on the street.
Living Democracy
Questioner: Sadhguruji, there are different political
leaders in the country. Some seem to create
communal disharmony, others speak a more

liberal, more peaceful language. Which stance
should be adopted?
Sadhguru: Once someone has become an elected
leader in a democratic society, then what he thinks
and believes within himself should be irrelevant to
you. You must pay attention to what he is doing
every day. If political leaders are doing the right
thing for the nation, we must support them. If
they are doing the wrong thing for the nation, we
must criticize that. There are different instruments
in a democracy through which we can stop such
things, although maybe not immediately. This is
what we should do as responsible citizens.
You should not have a pet politician of your own.
Is the politician that you have elected working for
the nation, or is he working for himself? This is the
first thing you have to see. The second thing is,
does he have the breadth of mind, intelligence, and
competence to create what the nation needs? And
does he understand the heartbeat of this nation? If
these things are present in a politician or a leader,
its our business to support him. If this is not there,
its our business to replace him.
Have You Experienced God?
Questioner: Sadhguruji, Namaskar. Im a Professor
at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. My first
query is, have you experienced God?

Sadhguru: Let me tell you this a lot of people
think Sadhguru is a title, but it is actually a
description. When you call someone Sadhguru, it
means that you dont go to him because you want
to understand the scriptures he has not read
any. You dont go to him because you want to go
to heaven he has not been there, and he is not
interested in going there. Sadhguru literally means
one who comes from within. I know this piece of
life [refers to himself] in its entirety, from its origin
to its ultimate. And thats all I know. There is a
scientific theory called Constructal Law about the
design of nature. This theory is trying to prove that
how an atom is made is how the cosmos is made;
how a single cell is made is how every life is made;
how an amoeba is made is how a human being is
made just the complexity and sophistication are
multiplying.
Whether you are aware, awake,
or asleep you are performing four
dimensions of karma.
This is something we have always said in the
yogic sciences anda1 and pinda2 are the same.
In terms of fundamental design, the minutest
minuscule of creation and the ultimate creation
are the same it is only the complexity and
sophistication that differs. If you know this, people
think you know everything that is their problem.
I dont know everything. I know this piece of life
entirely. Fortunately, because you are also a piece
of life that is made like me, if I talk about myself,
you think Im talking about you. If I talk about
myself, you think Im talking about the cosmos. If
I talk about myself, some people think Im talking
about God. These are all their interpretations. Im
only talking about myself, because thats the only
thing I know.
Are We Players or Being Played?
Questioner: Sadhguruji, pranam. Im an actor and
a writer. I would like to understand if the universe
is random and chaos, or is there a design? And are
we players, or are we being played and watched?
Sadhguru: Let me simplify the question: Do I have

a say in the way I live my life, or is it all controlled
from elsewhere? Am I being kicked around, or can
I also kick the ball? This is the only culture on the
planet that has always told you your life is your
karma. This means your life is your making. This is
the most dynamic way to exist. But unfortunately,
we turned this dynamic approach to life into a
fatalistic way of looking at it Ayyo, karma as
if it was happening to you from somewhere else.
Karma means action your action. As you sit here,
you are taking a variety of actions. Physical, mental,
emotional, and energy action is happening twenty-
four hours a day. Whether you are aware, awake,
or asleep you are performing four dimensions of
karma.
If you do not even know the nature of
your own existence, how will you know
the nature of the source of creation?
From the time you woke up in the morning to this
moment, you have performed physical karma,
mental karma, emotional karma, and energy
karma. How much do you think is conscious? Well
below one percent. So, ninety-nine percent plus
is unconscious action. When you are performing
ninety-nine percent unconscious action, it
obviously looks to you like someone is doing
something to you. This is what it means when
we talk about consciousness to become more
conscious. If instead of it being less than one
percent, lets say you become conscious of two
or five percent. Suddenly you will feel empowered,
and people around you will think you are a super
human being, simply because you become more
conscious of what is coming out of you and what
is coming towards you. You will see this is your
making. When we say your karma, we are telling
you, Your life is your making.

Do You Believe in God?
Questioner: Good evening, sir. Do you really believe
that there is a God? Does God exist?
Sadhguru: Is uperwala there?
Shekar Gupta: Is an old man sitting up there,
punishing us for the bad things we do and
rewarding us for the good things we do?
Sadhguru: About someone being up above and
managing your life, its like this. Imagine you just
came out of your mothers womb. You should see
how a newborn infant looks at everything. So much
creation Who did this? What is all this? You
looked at your mother maybe she did it? Well,
she delivered you she definitely didnt deliver
the planet. You looked at your father maybe he
did it? Well, he didnt look like he was capable of
all this. You looked at every other adult no one
looked competent enough to make all these things
happen. So, the simplistic childish conclusion is,
there is a big man sitting up there who does all this.
Everyone arrives at their belief in their own ways.
This happened in New York City. An eight-year-old
boy came home from school in the afternoon. He
had a very progressive mother. He asked, Momma,
is God a man or a woman? She thought about all
the gender politics going on in the nation, and after
much thought, she said, Both. The boy went into
deep thought. After sometime, he came back and
asked, Momma, is God black or white? Again she
thought through all the racial politics going on in
the nation, and she said, Both. The boy went into
profound thought. Then he came back and asked,
Momma, is God straight or gay? She thought
about all the politics involved with that aspect of
life, and she said, Both. The boy jumped in joy,
I got it! Its Michael Jackson. [Laughter] I dont
know how you arrived at your idea of God.
When you know what you are doing and you are

sure of what you are doing, you dont look up. You
look at what you have to handle. When you dont
know what to do, you look up. Lets discuss what
up is before we go into who is up. You are on a
round planet, and the damn thing is spinning all the
time. Do you know which side is up in this cosmos?
Is it somewhere marked this side up? You dont
even know what is up or down. Then how do you
know who is up or down?
beings. We said they are devas. We bowed down
to them in respect and in awe, and we aspired to
become like them. In this culture, there has never
been a concept of one God up there. That is an
imported idea. There is no God in this land, but we
have millions of devas and devis.
Shekar Gupta: Anybody can choose whoever they
want to pray to.

We have made too many childish conclusions. Its Sadhguru: Its not about prayer. There never was
time to grow up. We must understand this. One prayer in this land. There was ritual and process
thing is for sure we did not create this existence,
to access deities. Even today, at least in the South,
and its too fantastic. With all our intelligence, we
deities are referred to as yantras. Yantra means
are still not able to understand a leaf or a single
machine. We came up with subjective machines
atom in its entirety. We know how to use things, that we called yantras, which are energy forms
but we dont know them entirely. If you do not even
that dont necessarily have a physical form. There
know the nature of your own existence, how will is a human aspiration to constantly expand our

devis that excelled beyond our present capabilities,

Swadhishthana The Abode of the Self
Here, Sadhguru describes the multitude of possibilities that the swadhishthana, the second of the seven
chakras in the human system, offers from basic procreating to creating divine entities.
The seven chakras or dimensions of the human
system are not separate entities. Only for the sake
of study, because of the magnitude of perception
and understanding required, these aspects were
looked at separately. These seven dimensions are
one interlocked and integrated into the other you
cannot really separate them. In swadhishthana,
there is muladhara. In manipuraka, there is
swadhishthana, and muladhara. In anahata, all the
three are there. Like this, in everything, everything
else is there. But there are certain qualities that are
dominant in a particular dimension.
Creating a Distance to the Body
The next dimension after the muladhara,
which is the basis of the human system, is the
swadhishthana. Swadhishthana means abode
of the self. When one masters the muladhara, it
can either lead to a very stable body, or a certain
drunkenness of experience, or to heightened
levels of perception. If one has used the mastery
over the muladhara for stability alone, then the

swadhishthana becomes a strong abode of
regeneration and pleasure. If one has used it to
drunkenness, then the swadhishthana becomes
an abode of a sense of bodilessness not in terms
of becoming like thin air, but as an experience of
a little distance to the body. If you take an orange,
there is sweetness in the fruit that is not there in
the peel; they are one inside the other, but there is
a little distance. Likewise, when there is sweetness
of the self, the body will sit a little loosely on it. This
will give some freedom from physical drives that
human beings tend to have.
If one has used the muladhara or the amrita to
heighten ones perception, then the swadhishthana
also functions in this way and further enhances
that possibility. When energies are dominant in
the swadhishthana, one becomes far more alert to
life around. Swadhishthana sadhana gives you a
certain freedom. You know, the freedom movement
in this country was referred to as Swatantra. Swa-
tantra means technology of the self a way to
become free. The biggest bondage is in the way
we are reproduced, and the biggest urge is that

of reproduction. It binds people in body, mind,
and emotion. Swadhishthana and swatantra are
connected. Swatantra is a way to release the self
from these kinds of troubles and compulsions.
Procreation or Creation of Gods?
There have been many beings who have used
the swadhishthana for specific goals. If your
swadhishthana is established at the lowest level, it
is purely reproductive. At the highest level, you can
create a god if you wish. Creating that which you
consider the Divine must be approached carefully.
The technology of god-making is based on having
absolute control over the swadhishthana. Many
yogis who created divine entities felt creating one
was good enough. They gave it their all and left with
its completion. Or they gave it their all and became
dissipated in the process. Some retained the
possibility of doing more. If your swadhishthana
is on, you may deliver a baby, or you may deliver
a god. Only if all the other six dimensions in your
system are on, can you deliver a god. And only if all
the other six are equally active can you live on and
maintain potency after delivering a god.
The most significant thing you can do
with your swadhishthana is to deliver
a divine entity.
The tantra of making the self free is about creating
a certain flexibility of your life energies, in such way
that they are not bound by the compulsions of the
body anymore. To keep this body alive, healthy,
and capable, you have to invest a certain amount
of energy. Without that, it will lose its capabilities;
it will lose its capacity to do things. If you want to
deliver a god, you have to invest all you have into it.
Otherwise, a divine entity will not be a possibility.
Somebody delivered us that is also important;
that is why we are sitting here. The most significant
thing you can do with your swadhishthana is to
deliver a divine entity.
Consecrating Human Beings
Delivering a divine entity, or in other words

consecration, can happen in many ways. Of all the
material in the world, the easiest one to consecrate
is the human body. But the easiest to turn around
tomorrow morning and say something else to you,
is also the human mind. If someone has brought
their mind to a state of unquestioned focus
towards something, then consecrating that body to
function like a divine entity becomes a possibility.
But most people in todays world are not able to
maintain that kind of focus. Every other day, they
start questioning if they are doing the right thing in
life whether it is their marriage, brahmacharya, or
spirituality in general. The worst calamity that has
happened to modern society is that they cannot
stay focused on anything. The entire culture has
become about What will I get? Once What will I
get? is the main criteria, the scavenging mind will
keep on moving from one thing to the other.
Another dimension of the swadhishthana is that
you can take it above its natural compulsions.
Whatever is referred to as sexuality is essentially
nature instigating you to reproduce. In modern
societies, people treat it as if it was a purpose
by itself. People are using it to bind themselves
to each other. But fundamentally, the longing in
the body is to reproduce. If this was not there,
we wouldnt be here today. But if you want to go
beyond the cycle of life, then transcending these
dimensions become important.
The Swadhishthana in Tantra
The use of the swadhishthana is a very complex
and a fantastic process. There are three different
ways of doing it: It can be done with rituals, or
by using the body, or by using pure energy. The
swadhishthana can manifest at its highest level
even through the body or through raising the
energies in a certain way, or by using external
substances. Generally in tantra, there are three
fundamentals, which are called kaula, mishra, and
samaya the lower, the middle, and the higher
system. One uses external substances. If you have
no control over your own system, you use other
substances to generate an energy that functions
at a higher level than you, which could be referred
to as a divine entity.
Through ritualistic processes, tantrics have created
various deities that stand up and walk in their own

ways. The tantric himself may not be evolved in any
way, but he understands the ritual and sticks to it.
Because he sticks to the ritual the way it should
be, a certain energy is created. You can see this
happening in certain temples in India. The priests
may not be evolved beings they just stick to the
ritual. They have been taught to never alter the
process. And suddenly, a burst of energy happens
there. But in this way, it cannot be consolidated
and made to stay alive for generations. If you want
to create an energy form that lives for a longer
period of time, one way of doing it is through your
body. But if you want it to last for a very long time,
you need to use pure energy. If you invest a certain
amount of energy, it can live for a few thousands
of years.
A Way to Rejuvenate
Of all the things that we can do in the yogic system,
working with the swadhishthana is among the
most complex and beautiful, But for the individual,
it is also a dangerous way of doing things. If you
do too much of it or lose control over it, you may
have a beautiful self, but you may lose your body.
There have been many cases where a combination
of swadhishthana and muladhara has produced
beautiful results for people. Many have been
rejuvenated from almost deathlike situations and
become vibrantly alive.
If muladhara and swadhishthana are
stabilized, health will happen by itself, from
within, because they are at the very
basis of the body.
Our Rejuvenation Center is doing this to some
extent. If you are less than fifty years of age and
you come to us for three weeks, we will make you
five years younger, in terms of cellular age. If you
are over fifty years of age, we will make you three
years younger in three weeks. If you stay for six
weeks, we will make you five years younger. If you
are over sixty years of age, we will make you one-
and-a-half to two years younger in three weeks.
If you stay for six weeks, we will make you three
years younger. If you stay with us for twelve weeks,
we will make you six to eight years younger, in

terms of cellular age. Similarly, there are little
adjustments, depending on the progression of age.
Immediate or Ultimate Wellbeing?
This can be done through various types of
therapies, using Siddha and Ayurveda oils and
medicines, herbs, substances, and metals. It is a
complex process. But a better way to do it would be
to activate your muladhara and swadhishthana by
yourself, so that the body fixes itself. If muladhara
and swadhishthana are stabilized, health will
happen by itself, from within, because they are at the
very basis of the body. The schools of muladhara
and swadhishthana created elaborate systems
of medicine and ways of becoming healthy. This
happened by the demands of the marketplace.
When they met a yogi, people only asked things
like, Can you cure my disease? Can you make me
young again? Can you bring my grandmother back
to life? Very few people asked, Can you take me
beyond my limitations?
Yoga got crafted as per peoples demands. Of
course, in todays world, people feel this is perfectly
legitimate and the best thing about yoga. Using the
yogic system only to attend to ones health is the
lowest way of using it. But that is considered the
highest today. Only if there are health benefits, they
think its for real. The muladhara comes in handy
as a system of yoga to get market access in the
world, because you can do something that other
people are impressed with and that could become
a passageway for bigger things later on. I dont
have the patience for that. For the muladhara,
you can use earth and herbs, because herbs are
an outcome of the earth. For the swadhishthana,
mostly fire and akash are used. By using these
elements and substances, one can acquire a
certain capability, so that things from outside do
not touch you. There have been fantastic stories in
this context.
Mastery Is Freedom
When the young American man, who is today
referred to as Ram Dass, came to Neem Karoli
Baba in the sixties, the American youth believed
LSD was the ultimate solution in life. Many of them
took it. Some, thinking that they could fly, jumped
off buildings. Ram Dass came with a supply of
LSD to Neem Karoli Baba. Neem Karoli Baba was

sitting there, blissed out by himself. Ram Dass, or
whatever his name was at that time, said that he
had something else. Neem Karoli Baba asked what
it is. Ram Dass gave him a few LSD pills. Neem
Karoli Baba put them in his mouth. This dosage
could have killed a man, but he went about his
activity as usual, and nothing happened to him.
Ram Dass was impressed, and either out of his
own receptivity, or because of the drug, or because
of Neem Karoli Babas compassion, certain things
happened to him. Later on, he went back to the
United States and dedicated his life to somehow
bring this into peoples lives, or at least to open up
the Western mind to the possibility that there is
something beyond what they had imagined.
Flower or no flower every plant, every
life, and the earth have not only their own
fragrance but their own reverberation.
If you have sufficient mastery over both
swadhishthana and muladhara, then the plants will
speak to you. The elaborate system of Ayurveda has
over one hundred thousand formulations more
than the modern pharmacopeia. This did not come
from someone who was sitting and experimenting
in a laboratory. They just walked in the forest, and
the plants spoke to them. When the sweetness
of the self releases you from the compulsions of
the body, the language of everything around you
becomes yours.
When Plants Speak to You
When the plants spoke to them, they did not
say, I will cure your diabetes, but the quality of
each plant became apparent. Lets say you just
practiced kalaripayattu1, and you were stinking
like a goat. Then you walked by the parijata tree,
and smelling you, the tree shrank. After having a
shower, you walked by the tree again, and suddenly,
the smell of the parijata2 made you feel fantastic.
Both can happen, not just depending on how you
are in body, but also how you are in your mind.

Sometimes, when you walk, you notice a fragrance
that enchants you. But most of the time, you may
be busy with your phone.
A whole lot of people are lost in the filth of their
own mind; they cant smell the fragrance. In
Telugu, there is a saying that translates to How
will a donkey know the smell of sandalwood? It
takes some sensitivity to smell fine fragrance.
Flower or no flower every plant, every life, and
the earth have not only their own fragrance but
their own reverberation. To be able to receive that,
you must be in a certain level of pleasantness
and joy within itself. Then the plants will speak to
you. This is how the sages of the past discovered
thousands of herbs and roots as to what they
can do to us. No one sat with a microscope and
analyzed their structure and impact on our DNA or
whatever. Plants will speak to you when you shut
up completely.
When you realize the limitations of your existence,
you will have nothing to say. If you think you are big,
you always have something to say. Just twenty-
five years ago, most people in India would make a
phone call maybe once a year. One day, they would
go to the post office where this black monster was
sitting. This was a big occasion. Some major event
would have happened in their lives, for them to use
the phone. Today, suddenly everyone has so much
to say, not because they all got enlightened and
have a lot to share they simply have a lot to say.
And how much ever they say, it doesnt seem to be
enough now.
There is nothing wrong in using technology for
our wellbeing. A problem arises when, empowered
by technology, we believe we have become
superhuman. If you think you are big because
of a gadget, when the battery drains and theres
no place to recharge, suddenly, without your
smartphone, you will look dumb.
So, swadhishthana and manipuraka are two
dimensions that offer an enormous array of things
that one can do with them.

The Game of Dice & Draupadis Humiliation
What has happened so far: The Pandavas successfully conducted a Rajasuya Yagna in their prospering
kingdom of Indraprastha, and Yudhishthira, as the eldest of the five brothers, became the Emperor.
Humiliated by the events and envious of his cousins success, Duryodhana thirsted for revenge.
Shakuni said, What you cannot do with the sword,
you could do with guile. You are a foolish Kshatriya,
always thinking about the sword, always thinking
about poison, always thinking about killing. There
are other ways to do things. And he pulled out his
dice, saying, These are my fathers bones. They
will roll as I want. Ask me for any number I will
get it for you. The dharma of those days was if
you invited a Kshatriya for a duel or a game of dice,
he could not say, No. He had to come. Shakuni
said, Yudhishthira has a weakness for playing
dice, and he has absolutely no clue how to play.
Let us invite him for a game of dice. I will play for
you. With this game of dice, we will get their wealth,
their kingdom, everything out of them. Just bring
them here. I will take care of the rest.
Duryodhana suddenly livened up he showered,
changed his clothes, ate, and full of vigor, went
to his father and said, Father, we must invite
the Pandavas for a game of dice. The moment
Bhishma heard this dastardly plan, he stepped in
and said, No way. For the first time, Duryodhana
revolted openly against Bhishma and said, You
are an old man. You dont understand the politics
of the day. Leave it to me. Until then, no one had
ever spoken deprecatingly to Bhishma. But now
he got pushed aside by this young man. Everyone
present was aghast, but no one had the courage
to say anything, because Duryodhana was the king
now.
Dhritarashtra said he did not like the idea, but he
actually liked it. They sent the invitation to the

Pandavas. Yudhishthira was such a good man that
he said, Our cousins have invited us. They just
came to us as our guests. Now it is our dharma
to go to them and be their guests. Bhima said,
We would be utterly stupid to go back to that
place and play a game of dice with them. They got
something up their sleeves. They will once again
try to eliminate us in some way. Yudhishthira said,
No, it is our dharma. When they call me for a game
of dice, as a king, I cannot say No. And he liked
to play, even though he did not know how to play.
In full regal glory, the five brothers, their queen, and
their whole entourage were set to journey back
to Hastinapur. Duryodhana wanted to build an
assembly hall for the game of dice that was equally
good as the one the Pandavas had. He hired a
local architect, and, in an effort to impress, made
the hall horribly garish. Even his own brothers,
who otherwise had no taste either, did not like the
hall. And the Pandavas made the mistake of not
informing Krishna, who had gone back to Dwaraka.
They went there by themselves, thinking that after
all, they were just visiting their cousins.
The Pandavas arrived at the hall. The full assembly
of the court was present to watch the game of
dice. Yudhishthira sat down, ready to play. Then
Duryodhana came, but he sat down away from
the dice board. People looked a little surprised,
and Duryodhana announced, Shakuni, my uncle,
will play for me. A murmur went through the
assembly. Everyone knew Shakuni was an uncanny
dicer. Playing dice was all he was doing, all the

time. And everyone knew these dice he had were Then Karna suggested, You can wager your wife,

Yudhishthira will lose. It was her time of the month, so she was in the

Then Duryodhana said, Come, Panchali, sit on my
lap. Enraged, Bhima said, Today, you pointed at
your thigh and asked Panchali to sit there. One
day, I will smash your thigh and kill you! Their
opponents said, We will talk about killing later.
Right now, disrobe the woman. Dushasana went to
pull her single garment. The situation turned from
civilized to brutal. The present gentlemen turned
into beasts. Draupadi was helpless and enraged.
As Krishna had promised Draupadi, he protected
her and ensured in his own way that she did not get
disrobed. When they saw the miracle happen, that
even though their intentions were to go all the way,
they could not, fear seized Dhritarashtras heart.
For the first time during this whole event,
Dhritarashtra rose to speak, and he said, The
game is over. Everyone gets back what they had
before the game. Yudhishthira is still the king
of Indraprastha. Let them go back in honor.

Duryodhana, Karna, Dushasana, and their whole
clan got very angry. Duryodhana left the sabha.
The Pandavas got back their kingdom, their
freedom, their wealth, and everything else, but the
burden of shame remained. With hanging heads,
they started to walk towards Indraprastha.
Shakuni, Karna, and Duryodhana quickly took
Dhritarashtra aside and said, This is not right.
Because of your intervention, what was a fair game
resulted in an unfair outcome. We have to invite
them for just one more game. The conditions will
be these: If they win, we will go to the forest. They
can have the whole empire. If they lose, they must
go to the forest for twelve years and live incognito
for one more year. After thirteen years, anyway,
they can have their kingdom back. But there must
be some kind of price for the game we played.
Once again, Dhritarashtra got swayed by his son,
and he sent out messengers to call the Pandavas
back. The other four brothers initially refused to go
back, but Yudhishthira said, This is the dharma.
They are calling us back. We have to go, and he
went back. Obviously he had lost the game, and
they gave up their royal clothes, wore simple
garments, and left for the forest.

 Launch of Rally for Rivers
On Guru Purnima, Sadhguru launched the Rally
for Rivers campaign, an initiative to create
awareness and momentum amongst all sections
of society and the government, to induce policy
changes, save our rivers, and the future of the
country.
The rally will be flagged off from Isha Yoga Center,
Coimbatore on 3 September and culminate in
Delhi on 2 October 2017, covering 16 states and
over 20 events in major cities. Sadhguru will drive
himself from Kanyakumari to the Himalayas to
create awareness, covering more than 7000 km
across India.
With leaders and celebrities actively participating
in various legs of the journey, the city stops will
generate local awareness by involving everyone
from the young to the elderly, schools and
universities, clubs and institutions, farmers,
the government, NGOs and local citizens.
Documentaries, music concerts, and cultural
performances including renowned artists will
ensure the events are not only informational but
also celebratory and motivational in nature.

This is not a protest. This is not an agitation. This is a campaign to raise

awareness that our rivers are depleting. Everyone who consumes water

How to Deal with Destructive Criticism?
On this Spot, Sadhguru addresses the social phenomenon of hate in the sense of criticism and acts
that are designed to derogate, harm, and destroy. He says, Becoming insensitive is not the answer it
is only avoidance. The answer lies deeper.
Once you are active in the world, people will
throw all kinds of things at you. What life throws
at you is determined by so many forces, but what
you make out of it is one hundred percent up to
you. Human beings have risen above the most
impossible situations. Think of someone like
Nelson Mandela. What he had been put through
would have broken most people. From that, he
came out as a gentle power, a kind of power that
arises from not being identified with anything.
How to deal with critics and negative forces? It
takes Asatoma Sadgamaya to constantly move
towards truth, towards what works. There will
always be some who will try to throw a spanner
in the works. Over the last twenty-seven years,
some vicious defamation campaigns have
been run against us. Though certain forces
were determined to undermine our efforts, we
have made Isha into a major movement, on all
levels. Negative forces have to be dealt with in
an appropriate manner. There is no point being
philosophical about it. But unfortunately, too
much philosophy has percolated into peoples
minds, not enough sense.

SADHGURU
SPOT
Even high-ranking law enforcement officers have
told me, Sadhguru, to all great beings, this has
happened. You know what Rama and Krishna
went through. You will anyway go beyond that.
I said, I didnt talk to the law enforcement to tell
me about what Rama, Krishna, or Jesus went
through. Do you want that to be the precedent?
Unfortunately, well-intentioned people are
wrapped up in their philosophies. Ill-intentioned
people are action-oriented. This is what we need
to change in the country well-intentioned
people must become action-oriented. Ill-
intentioned people, we must wrap them up in
their own negativity.
If we want the nation to move forward, all of
us must do what works. There is too much
activism, too little activity in this country. As a
hangover from the pre-independence era, we are
still honoring people who stop the nation from
functioning. Rasta roko, rail roko, hartal, bandh
may have been an appropriate means during the
freedom struggle against our occupiers. But what
sense does it make to lock down our own nation
today? Bringing a nation to a halt is one kind

of talent. Making a nation happen is a different
kind of talent. If at any time, someone organized
disruption in this country, there should be no
chance for them to become a leader. These are
elements who invest in other peoples problems.
This must go. There is work to be done in the
country.
What life throws at you is determined by so many
forces, but what you make out of it is one hundred
percent up to you.
If we can get people who hold key positions to
change their mindsets, many things will change
in the country. This includes bureaucratic leaders,
business leaders, social leaders, and leaders in
other areas. We have already touched about half
of these people. They are making a quiet change,
wherever they are. India has changed a lot in
the last twelve years. This evolution happens
quietly. If individuals make a fundamental
change in the way they perceive, understand,
and experience life, society will change. Lets
say you are interacting with a minimum of ten
people every day. Whenever you meet someone,
you can either leave a positive impact on them or
a negative one, or you can just let them pass by.
Every time you have someone in front of you,
you must see how to positively impact them. If
you can make them smile a little more, you made
a positive impact. This is the least you can do.
Whether you know the person or not, whether it
is a stranger or someone from an enemy country,
can you genuinely smile at them? Im not talking
about forcing a smile. If you keep smiling every
day without joy in your heart, it will kill you. If
there is joy in your heart, you will naturally have
a smile on your face. If you think what you are
doing is important, the first thing is to work
upon yourself. Why dont you take stock of your
life every month? Have you been a little better
human being this month than you were last
month? Have you become a little more joyful?
Criticism will anyway come. If you listen to
praise, if you enjoy accolades, inevitably you will
suffer criticism. If you want to have deep insights
into life, no ones opinion about you should mean
anything to you. About work and activity, you can
listen to other peoples opinions. About who you
are and what you are committed to, you should

not attach value to anyones opinion. To get to
this place takes a certain amount of inner work.
Most people are a product of other peoples
opinions. If people keep telling you how good
and wonderful you are, you will be floating on
cloud nine. If people tell you otherwise, you will
crash cloud-burst.
Living in society, you cannot shake off criticism
just like that. Becoming insensitive is not the
answer it is only avoidance. If you want a true
answer, you need to work upon yourself. An inner
dimension has to evolve that does not depend
upon what is happening around you. If who you
are is clearly established within yourself, then it
wont matter what people say. Some people say
you are great, some people say you are horrible;
some people say what you are doing is fantastic,
some people say its no good its okay. I dont
have time to look in the rearview mirror my eyes
are always on the road. In the rearview mirror,
someone may be gesticulating angrily, someone
may be praising you it doesnt matter.
If you want to have deep insights into life, no
ones opinion about you should mean
anything to you.
This is not the time to enjoy successes or suffer
failures. This is the time to put everything we
have into creating the best possible results.
Thats all human life is about to strive for
what truly matters. What happens or doesnt
happen is subject to various factors. But if you
do not strive for what you truly care for, it is a
wasted life. Before the drama starts, it is already
a tragedy. So many issues arise just because
people are not doing what they care for. If you
are striving to create what you really care for,
neither praise nor criticism will matter. If you can
deal with situations without being affected by
them, if the situations dont decide who you are
but you decide how the situations should be
thats what I call success. Thats what I think you
should strive for in life.

INGREDIENTS
1 cups sago large-sized pearls; washed well to
remove dust particles; soak overnight
10-12 French beans stringed, finely chopped
1 carrot medium-sized, peeled, grated
1 potato medium-sized, peeled, chopped into
bite-sized pieces
cup groundnuts roasted, coarsely ground
2-inch-piece coconut (optional) fresh, grated
1 Tbsp. lemon juice
Coriander leaves fresh (as desired)
Salt to taste
For the Seasoning:
2 Tbsps. oil
1 tsp. mustard seeds
1 tsp. cumin seeds
10-12 curry leaves
1 tsp. turmeric powder
METHOD
1. Soak the sago pearls in a sufficient amount of
water. Move the sago pearls around with a fork
occasionally to facilitate even soaking. By morning,
the sago should have become at least twice its
original size. To check if the sago has sufficiently

softened, press it with your fingers. If the center is
still hard, let it soak for longer. The sago should be
clear and transparent, without any lumps. If it is
not possible to soak the sago overnight, wash the
sago and soak it for 22 hours.
2. Drain the sago into a colander and keep it aside.
(Some varieties of sago will need to be spread on a
dry cloth for all the water to drain.)
3. For the seasoning, heat the oil in a pan and add
the mustard seeds. When they begin to splutter,
add the cumin seeds, curry leaves, and turmeric
powder.
4. Add the beans, carrots, and potato pieces, and
sprinkle water. Cover the pan with a lid and cook
until soft.
5. Add the sago. Sprinkle a little water and salt,
and stir for about 5 minutes. Stir gently but firmly,
ensuring that the sago does not stick to the pan.
6. Switch off the stove. Add the roasted groundnuts
and grated coconut; mix well.
7. Add the lemon juice and mix well.
8. Serve hot, garnished with coriander leaves.
Note: This dish can be served with curd, chutney, or pickle. If
desired, add red chili powder.
