Re: Opposition to the United States leaving the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization

His Excellency Mr. Chris Hegadorn,

I am sending you this letter in strong opposition as to the United States leaving the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization due to perceived anti-Israel bias.1 I do hope that you
understand that the Mission of the United States to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and
Cultural Organization is the Mission of the United States. I do not believe that the United States is the
Mission of Israel to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.2 While I do
agree that any discriminatory and prejudiced views towards another country is wrong, I do not believe
that the United States leaving the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization will
be good as from a foreign policy perspective. I believe that the best way to change things is on the inside
rather than on the outside, especially when it involves the United Nations. As far as the United Nations
is concerned, I would like to see the United States leading the world in different entities of the United
Nations, however I do believe that this move by the United States will stop the United States from being
known as to being a leader in our world.

I do hope that you understand that countries that are in competition with the United States will see this
as an opportunity to lead the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Now, the
United States is in a position where it is giving up its known affiliation as to being a world leader if
representatives of the United States disagree with something that is going on in an international forum.
I do not believe that the move that the United States is taking as to this issue is a wise move.3 Even lets
say if it was true that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization was biased
towards the State of Israel, the United States leaving that part of the United Nations would not help that
entity stop having prejudiced views towards the State of Israel. Now that part of the United Nations will

1
I would also like to say that international forums should not be biased as to the people of the State of Palestine
because like the people of the State of Israel, all should be treated equally, fairly and with dignity and respect. No
race or group of people are inferior or superior to the other.
2
I am in no way saying in this letter that the United States does not need to be allies with the State of Israel. I am
hoping that the State of Israel and the United States will always have a strong diplomatic relationship.
3
I also do not believe that it was a wise move for the State of Israel to leave the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization.

not only be prejudiced towards the State of Israel but part of the United Nations would have very little
opposition to any type of hostility that the State of Israel or the people of Israel would receive at that
part of the United Nations, assuming that the United Nations Educational, Cultural and Scientific
Organization has been biased and held prejudiced attitudes and behavior towards the state and the
people of Israel.

I believe that the United States should stay with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization to help be the change that it wishes to see in the world. If the United States or even if the
State of Israel felt as if the UNESCO was biased and prejudiced towards the State of Israel, then it to me
would make more sense as for all countries that are allies with the State of Israel to stay in international
forums as to helping demolish prejudiced views that some individuals and that even some countries may
have towards the State of Israel. Leaving the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organization is not going to solve any issues that need to be resolved in that international body and
further I believe that this move is going to shine bad light and make the foreign policy of the United
States seem unstable. From an international perspective, the United States should not support one
international body under one presidential administration and then support something completely
different under a new presidential administration. The United States needs to have and needs to make
stable foreign policy decisions.

I do hope that you understand that many citizens of the United States of all political parties do feel as if
President Donald Trump and his administration are making some extremely awful foreign policy
decisions. I feel as if under the Trump Administration, that diplomacy and foreign relations between the
United States and other countries are worsening and that the United States is not being a leader in the
world as from a foreign policy perspective. The United States leaving the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization is a perfect example as to why myself and why many other citizens
of the United States feel this way.4 The United States supporting one thing under one presidential
administration and completely abandoning its own foreign policy stance on something when a new
presidential administration comes into power by and through political interference does shine bad light
on the United States. That needs to change. Politics should never be allowed to influence the United
States as to breaking international agreements, common sense treaties, or allowing the United States to
break away from being a party to international forms or by being a leader in those international forums.

Respectfully,

Isaiah X. Smith5

4
The United States deciding to withdraw from the Pairs Agreement under the Trump Administration is also
another reason why citizens of the United States feel this way. It appears as if some political figures believe that it
is somehow patriotic to support a repeal as to everything that the White House under President Barack Obama
supported. Political figures doing so makes the United States appear to be unstable and it further makes the
United States appear to be stupid. We are called the United States because we are supposed to be the United
States.
