If you got some wrong, try to read over the relevant section of text again to help you understand why. Careful Reading Notice how the information is often paraphrased. That means the words used in the question are often different from the words used in the text. Therefore, you have to read both the question sentence and the relevant sentence or sen- tences in the text carefully to make sure you get the right answer. Coreful reading isa different skill from gist reading. It involves reading slowly and trying to understand all the information. It is important for True or False questions. You dor't have time to read the whole text carefully in the exam BUT you do have time to carefully read short parts. But how do you know which parts to read carefully? Well, this is where exam strategy comes in. Remember, the first ques- tion set, title-matching, requires you to read for gist. This tells you the general topic of each paragraph. So, when you read ‘True or False questions, you can use what you already know about the paragraph topics to predict where you wil find the specific information you need. Skim (quick-read) or scan the paragraph until you find the sentence or sentences you need. ‘Then read these sentences carefully to check the answer: (We will look ot sconning in more detail later) In other words: Step | Gist-read the text and note the paragraph topics in your own words Stop 2 Read each Tiue or False question and predict the paragraph where you will find the answer, Step 3. (You do not need to decide ifthe questions are True or False at ths time.) 1. Billy Morgan became the first person to do a difficult snowboard trick. Paragraph 2. There were two slopestyle winter sports in the 2014 Olympics. Paragraph 3. Slopestyle tricks have a connection to BMX cycling, Paragraph __ 4. F Shorter skis are used in normal ski racing than in slopestyle skiing. G Billy Morgan has not won a gold medal at the Olympics yet. H The 2014 Olympic competition was not the first international slopestyle event. TRINITY [SEL Preparation for Task | Long reading Section 3: Questions I 1-15 (Completing Sentences) Exercise 5 OK, now let's look at the final type of question ~ gap filing. Questions 1-15 ask you to complete sentences using words or phrases from the text. This also requires careful reading of individual sentences. But first you must find the sentence you need in the original text. Scanning can help you do this. Scanning Scanning involves searching the text for key words, phrases or ideas. You don't want to read all the text as you scan, you ‘want to quickly look through the lines of text until your find the word(s) you are looking for. For example, look at this gap- filing sentence: 1. The 1800 quadruple cork trick involves going in the cir four times without falling over when you land. To find where the answer is quickly, you could scan the text for the phrase 1800 quodiuple cor. It only appears once, in Paragraph 1, so this immediately tells us where the answer is. Now look at the sentences from the original text where the answer is found: He's become the first slopestyle snowboarder to perform a trick called the 1800 quadruple cork. Basically, he went head over heels four times in the air before landing his snowboard on the ground again without falling over. Notice how the information in the gap-fill question is paraphrased. That means different words are used to express it. Because the gap-filing sentence will not be the same as the sentence in the text, it's important to pick words to scan for ‘carefully. Proper nouns, the names of things and places, are always good words to scan for because they can't be para- phrased. 1800 quadruple cork is a good example of this. It appears in both the gap-filirg sentence and the original text Numbers, dates and times are often helpful in the same way. For instance, the number four here. Use what you already know to help you too. In doing questions |-5, you learned the paragraph topic, so instead of having ‘to scan the whole text each time you look for some information, you will probably be able to predict the paragraph you need to scan instead. Ths will sve you time. In short, you don't just want to sean the text, you want to SMART SCAN the text. Give yourself the best chance possible (of locating the information you need quickly. ‘A. Look at the sentences below. Highlight the words you think might help you scan the text to quickly find the information youneed. 1. Billy Morgan did something a lot of people thought was + Paragraph __ 2 of his trick has been viewed thousands of times online, Paragraph _ 3, The features on a slopestyle snowboard course include Paragraph _ 4. ‘Air’ refers to the height of a boarder’s Paragraph __ 5. Slopestyle snowboarders do similar tricks to those done in skateboarding and__. Paragraph _ 6. Slopestyle became part of the for the first time in 2014. Paragraph __ 5. B. Now read the sentences in part A again. Use what you already know about the paragraph topics to predict the paragraphs ‘where you wil find the information you need. Write your predictions on the answer lines. 5. C. Now complete the gaps in the sertences in part A by ‘smart scanning’ the original text. Exercise 6 Let’ take another look at the sentences from Exer 5 now. The related section of the original toxt is in italics. 1. Billy Morgan did something a lot of people thought was ‘Many people thought it was impossible, but Billy Morgan just proved them wrong. ‘Tip: Look out for synonyms (similar words) and similar ideas, e.g. many people and a lot of peopl. of his trick has been viewed thousands of times online The video of his amazing achievement has been viewed thousands of times on the internet.
