Indonesian EFL Class Teaching Technique in the Remedial Environment

According to (Ischak & Warji, 1987), remedial teaching in teaching learning process is one
of the corrective activities in a form of giving assistance or treatment which is systematically
programmed and organised. Remediation offers to improve the problems of the learning process
that the students faced. In Indonesia, specifically, remediation is the important part in teaching
learning process to help the students to improve their process in learning. However, based on the
preliminary observation, the application of remedial teaching in Indonesia meets the inappropriate
ways to help the students. Remedial assumed to develop a solution to a particular problem but it
has no valuable meaning if it does not apply in an appropriate way (Grubb, 1998 cited in Boylan
& Saxon, 1998). In contrast with the implementation of remedial teaching in Indonesia,
theoretically, remedial teaching will become an important part in teaching learning process if the
application is in the appropriate ways by identifying the effective techniques.

In this study, there are two general trends in research on remedial, the first is the methods
and techniques exploration that characterise effective instructional activities for remedial teaching.
The other trend is program components exploration and organisational structures that characterised
successful programs. This study emphasis to the implementation of remedial teaching for
Indonesian teacher in EFL Class by analysing the original theory and the influence of remedial
teaching on students performances including the institution support.

The participants of the study will be the students and teachers in some institutional in
Surabaya. The instruments are field notes and documents which are students works and results.
The data collection method in this study generally is in the form of observation that will be
analysed by the qualitative approach in the interactive model (Miles & Huberman, 1994)
consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification.

This study will be important for the teachers supported by the institution to apply the
remedial teaching so that the goal of helping the students problem will be resolved and remedial
teaching will be categorised as an effective way to improve the ability of the students. In addition,
the important things to know is that the remedial teaching is kind of treatment, so it does not tie
the teachers to the way how they teach. It let the teacher create their own way to transfer the
knowledge to the students.
