GROUP WORK PROJECT (70 %)

Recycle Bin : Separation At Source (Household Waste)

Starting from 1 September 2015, all premises are required to separate solid waste at source and
this ruling will be implemented in stages in accordance to Act 672
Act 672 :
SOLID WASTE AND PUBLIC CLEANSING MANAGEMENT ACT 2007
An Act to provide for and regulate the management of controlled solid waste and public cleansing for
the purpose of maintaining proper sanitation and for matter incidental thereto.
Ministry of Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government

The process of separating solid waste at source involves separating solid waste according to waste
composition such as recyclable waste, residual waste and bulky/ garden waste

Why do we need to separate solid waste at source :

Preventing disposal of recyclable materials
Reducing the amount of solid waste sent to land fills
Reducing the country allocation for solid waste disposal
It is an offence under the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672) to
not separate solid waste

Problem Statement
Your team has been appointed to design a prototype recycle bins to manage household solid
waste. The prototype recycle bins are to be in 2 types (i) Indoor and (ii) Outdoor.

The Indoor recycle bins will act as temporary storage container and the outdoor recycle bins will
act as a final storage before the said waste being collected by the Concessionaire (SWM
Environment Sdn Bhd).

The Design Brief stated that both the Indoor and Outdoor Recycle Bins MUST
i) Cater the concept of Separation of Source; and
ii) Meeting the demand from the stakeholders (home owners/ enforcement agency and
Concessionaire SWM Environment Sdn Bhd)

INSTRUCTION
Step 1
1. Work in a group (max 5 students: (various background and mixed male/female).
2. Each group should appoint a Project Manager & a Secretary to document the project progress.

Step 2
3. Think of problems related to the above statement (i.e. 3 problems/ per student, 3x5 = 15 problems/ per group),
4. All the problems must be accompanied by FILA table; a tool towards problem solving, to help overcome
problem solutions technique and list down the facts from problems, ideas, learning outcome and some actions
in order to solve the problem
Facts problem
Ideas issues of problem
Learning Outcomes way to overcome the problems
Action steps taken to solve the problem

Step 3
5. Discuss and highlight the three (3) most potential commendable problems solutions and by applying Creative
Problems Solving tools/ techniques, the group should be able to present them in a group for Q&A Session-
perhaps with the necessary aid such as sketches or replica to get your ideas across.
6. Each idea should be presented by students in a groups Q & A session (why, where, how, when...)
7. Through the decision making process, choose the best idea among the best that have been presented in Q & A
Session to be developed and refined as a final product.
8. Design and produce a model or a replica (idea development) of the said innovation

Step 4
9. The group will have to prepare the advertising needs regarding their product.
10. Preliminary Submission will be held in a class from Week 12 to week 13
Prepare materials to be orally presented.
