1. Overview
This chapter provides an overview of the I/A Series Letterbug Configurator which enables you
to assign letterbugs to infrared enabled I/A Series stations from a Pocket PC.
The I/A Series Letterbug Configurator is a handheld device that allows you to assign letterbugs to
infrared (IR) enabled I/A Series control processors and Fieldbus Communication Modules. The
Letterbug Configurator comprises a Pocket PC loaded with the I/A Series Letterbug Configurator
installation package, which is stored on a secure digital (SD) memory card for installation pur-
poses. Letterbugs are alphanumeric strings that the user defines to identify stations in an
I/A Series control system. The configurator software runs on a Windows CE based Pocket PC
with an infrared (IR) port. The Letterbug Configurator communicates with IR enabled
I/A Series stations such as the:
Field Control Processor 270 (FCP270)
Z-Module Control Processor 270 (ZCP270)
Fieldbus Communications Module (FCM100Et).

! WARNING
The I/A Series Letterbug Configurator is a non-intrinsically safe device. Do not use
it in incendiary sensitive areas. Use it in general purpose areas only.

The portability of the Letterbug Configurator allows you to assign letterbugs to these stations and
manage the letterbug/hardware ID configuration database for the control system while in the
field. Using Microsoft ActiveSync, you can automatically synchronize any changes made to
the database on the Letterbug Configurator with a master database maintained on a Windows XP
based workstation.
The Letterbug Configurator allows you to:
Assign letterbugs
View, import, export, create or edit a configuration database file comprised of
hardware IDs and letterbugs
Collect on-line status information from I/A Series stations.
Figure 1-1 shows the Letterbug Configurator display of a database configuration file.
The Letterbug Configurator uses the hardware ID or letterbug of a specific station to establish a
communications session between that station and the Pocket PC. Once the session is established,
you can assign a letterbug or read status information from an FCP270, ZCP270 or FCM100Et.
To identify the hardware ID of a module, read it from the label on the modules outer cover (see
Figure 1-2).

NOTE
Before using Letterbug Configurator to assign letterbugs to modules, you should be
familiar with its operation. For operating procedures, refer to the documentation
that was supplied with your Letterbug Configurator.

2. Installing Letterbug Configurator
Software on a Pocket PC
This chapter describes how to install the I/A Series Letterbug Configurator software on a
Pocket PC.
Before you can use the Pocket PC to assign letterbugs to IR enabled stations, you must install the
Letterbug Configurator software from the SD memory card or Internet. To install the software
from the Internet, you must install Microsoft ActiveSync on a Windows XP based desktop or
notebook PC. Then, using the USB port, you can connect the Pocket PC to the host computer to
install the Letterbug Configurator by running the installation program from the Invensys Web
page. You can also copy the installation program files from the Invensys Web page to a folder in
the host computer to run the program from there.

! CAUTION
Because most of the applications and data you install on your Pocket PC are held in
main memory, you will need to reinstall them if the battery completely discharges.

To download/upload the configuration database between the Pocket PC and a host computer, you
must synchronize the Pocket PC to the host computer using Microsoft ActiveSync. You can also
backup your configuration database to another SD memory card purchased for that purpose.
For replacement purposes, the memory card used with the I/A Series Letterbug Configurator is a
standard, secure digital (SD), read-write, flash memory card with a minimum of 32 MB of mem-
ory. The typical 9-pin, non-volatile, 32 MB SD memory card (Figure 2-1) serves as a funtional
replacement.

Read Status1,2 Establishes communication with the module and displays
available module status data.
Assign letterbug Establishes communication with the module (using its hard-
ware ID) and assigns the designated letterbug to the module.
This command is available only when you have selected a row
with a valid hardware ID and letterbug.
Display Keypad Displays the keypad for typing an alphanumeric text string in
the currently selected cell.
1 This command is enabled by selecting a:
Single hardware ID or letterbug
Row containing either a hardware ID or a letterbug
Row containing both a hardware ID and a letterbug
2 The Read Status command returns either the letterbug or hardware ID of the target module.
This information is automatically entered into the database. If a duplicate hardware ID is
present in the database, the new entry is marked with a yellow background. You then have the
opportunity to find and correct the duplicate entry (sort on hardware ID for large databases).
Editing the hardware ID with the yellow background or changing the View removes the
yellow warning indicator. If no action is taken, the duplicate is stored in the database.

4. Configuration Database
This chapter describes the configuration database format. It also describes how to create the
database on a host computer and download the database to the Pocket PC.
You can maintain the configuration database on a workstation using an application such as
Microsoft Excel or on the Pocket PC using the HPS Configurator.
The configuration database can contain the following information for each station:
Hardware ID
Letterbug
Assignment information
Using Microsoft's ActiveSync version 3.5 (or higher), you can automatically synchronize the
database maintained on a workstation with the database on the Pocket PC.

Database Format
As shown in Figure 4-1, you can maintain the configuration database in a spreadsheet such as
Microsoft Excel. The configuration database has three columns and one or more rows. The first
row, which is mandatory, contains the column headings. Any successive rows contain the data.
You can click on a column heading to sort that column.

Mandatory
Column Headings

Letterbug/
Hardware ID
Associated Pair

Figure 4-1. Database Format

21
B0700AY Rev B 4. Configuration Database

The first column contains the hardware IDs, the second column contains the letterbugs and the
third column indicates whether a hardware ID/letterbug pair in a row has been assigned to a sta-
tion. If the assignment has been made, the Assigned column contains a Y, otherwise the column is
blank.
You must enter the data according to the formatting guidelines described below.

ID The hardware ID is a six-digit hexadecimal number in the range of

000000 to FFFFFF. An example is 6C00A1. The cells in the hardware ID
column may contain a hardware ID or an empty cell. A label on the front
cover of the module contains the hardware ID. The hardware ID corre-
sponds to the last six digits of the station MAC address.

Letterbug Letterbug is an alphanumeric string of exactly six uppercase ASCII charac-

ters. Valid characters are A through Z and 0 through 9. White space or any
other characters are not allowed. The cells in the letterbug column may
contain a letterbug or an empty cell.

A This column is reserved for future use.

A row that contains only a hardware ID or letterbug indicates that these items have not yet been
associated (paired). In this case the Assigned column should be blank. Storing a list of dissociated
(unpaired) items is useful when assigning letterbugs to hardware in the field.
The database must not contain duplicate hardware IDs. When editing the database on the HPS
Configurator, duplicates are not allowed. If duplicates are detected during import, the HPS Con-
figurator marks them as duplicates.

NOTE
1. Fault-tolerant stations have unique hardware IDs but the same letterbug.
2. A module letterbug must be unique within the system, but the HPS Configurator
does not enforce this restriction.

Letterbugs
Letterbugs are initially assigned during the system definition phase of system implementation.
System definition is usually performed prior to the installation of the system equipment. Reports
produced by your system definition software contain the hardware ID and letterbug information
that is used in the following sections. For complete information on system definition, see System
Definition: A Step-By-Step Procedure (B0193WQ).

File Format
The configuration database is stored in comma-delimited format (.csv). Blank rows indicate rows
without data. The first row is reserved for headings and should be entered as shown in Figure 4-2.
If data is entered in the first row, it is ignored by the HPS Configurator.

Creating the Configuration Database

You can create the configuration database on the host computer or Pocket PC. If you are working
with a large number of modules, using the keyboard with your host computer is recommended.
Alternatively, you can use the sample CSV file that was installed with the application and save it
with another name.

NOTE
The Pocket Excel application does not have an option to save a file in CSV format.

To create a configuration database on a host computer:

1. Start Microsoft Excel and create the three columns as described in Database Format
on page 21.
2. Enter the data in the format described in Database Format on page 21.

NOTE
Fault tolerant stations have unique hardware IDs but share the same letterbug.
You must ensure that the first four characters of a module letterbug are unique within
the system; the software does not enforce this restriction.

3. In the File menu, click Save As, and in the dialog that opens enter a file name. In the
Save as type field, click CSV (comma delimited) (*.csv).
4. Use ActiveSync to download the file to the Pocket PC as described in Downloading
the Configuration Database to a Pocket PC on page 24.
When you have finished creating the configuration database and have downloaded it to the
Pocket PC, you are ready to assign the letterbugs to modules.

23

Downloading the Configuration Database to a

Pocket PC
Using ActiveSync, you can either automatically download the CSV configuration database file(s)
from your host computer to the Pocket PC, or you can manually download the database files
using Windows Explorer.

Downloading Via ActiveSync

To download the CSV database file(s) from the host computer, set up a partnership between it
and the Pocket PC. You can then use ActiveSync to download the CSV database file from the
specified folder to the default folder in your Pocket PC.

NOTE
You must have ActiveSync 3.7 (or greater) installed on your PC.

To download the database to a Pocket PC via ActiveSync:

1. Synchronize the Pocket PC with the host computer. See Synchronizing the Pocket
PC with the Host Computer on page 8.
The Microsoft ActiveSync window (Figure 4-3) opens and displays the status of the
Pocket PC connection which should be Synchronized.

Figure 4-3. Microsoft ActiveSync Window

2. In the Tools menus, click Options.

The Options dialog box (Figure 4-4) opens.

3. In the Sync Options tab, select the Files check box.

4. Click OK.
This creates the synchronized file folder C:\ Documents and Settings\Fox\My Docu-
ments\Pocket_PC My Documents on the host computer and creates a shortcut to this
folder on your desktop.
5. In the Foxboro subfolder of the above synchronized file folder, copy the CSV database
files that you want to synchronize (download) to your Pocket PC.
6. To synchronize your files, click Sync in the toolbar in the Microsoft ActiveSync dialog
box.
ActiveSync synchronizes the files in the Foxboro subfolder of the above synchronized
file folder and displays the synchronization status as shown in Figure 4-5.

Figure 4-5. Microsoft ActiveSync Window with File Synchronization Status

Hereafter, each time the Pocket PC is connected to the host computer, ActiveSync automatically
checks to ensure that both devices are synchronized. For more information, refer to the Active-
Sync Help or the HP documentation for your Pocket PC.

Downloading Manually
You can manually transfer CSV database files from the host computer to the Pocket PC.
To manually transfer files to the Pocket PC:
1. Synchronize the Pocket PC with the host computer. See Synchronizing the Pocket
PC with the Host Computer on page 8.
The Microsoft ActiveSync window (Figure 4-3) opens and displays the status of the
Pocket PC connection which should be Synchronized.
2. Open Windows Explorer on the host computer, navigate to Mobile Device\My
Pocket PC\My Documents folder and create a folder named Foxboro, if it does not
already exist.
3. Copy the *.csv files from the host computer drive to the Mobile Device\My Pocket
PC\My Documents\Foxboro folder.
The *.csv files are now in the My Documents\Foxboro folder on the Pocket PC.
Conversely, you can copy files from the Pocket PC to the host computer.

5. Operating the Letterbug
Configurator
This chapter describes how to assign letterbugs to IR enabled stations and read status from the
stations.

Assigning Letterbugs to Stations

Since other devices with IR ports can be in close proximity, you must ensure that you are commu-
nicating with the correct module. Make sure that the Letterbug Configurator is 6 inches to 2.5
feet from the module. It is recommended that you do not position the Letterbug Configurator
more then 15o off center.

NOTE
The Letterbug Configurator uses the IR port (COM2:) to communicate with
I/A Series stations. This port cannot be shared between applications. If another
application uses the IR port, such as the Beam application included with the Pocket
PC, it must be disabled. See Before Installing the Letterbug Configurator on
page 6.

FCP270 Letterbug Assignment

The following procedures assume that new or existing FCP270s are being configured for a new
control system. If you are configuring a fault-tolerant FCP270, start by installing only the
primary module. Do not install the shadow module until you are instructed to install it.

NOTE
Fault-tolerant FCP270s have different hardware IDs but share the same letterbug.

To assign a letterbug to an FCP270:

1. Install the single or primary module in the baseplate without connecting the fiber
optic cables, as instructed in Field Control Processor 270 Users Guide (B0700AR).
The modules green Operational status LEDs should be lit.
2. On the Letterbug Configurator, tap Start > HPS Configurator.
If this is the first time the application has started, an empty CSV document window
opens. If no file is currently open and files exist in the Foxboro directory, the file
window opens.
3. Open the CSV file that contains the hardware ID of the desired FCP270 (see
Figure 5-1).

27

Figure 5-1. Database Configuration Files (Foxboro Folder)

4. To select the row that contains the hardware ID of the FCP270, tap the row number
on the left of the list (see Figure 4-1 on page 21).
Both the hardware ID and letterbug must be selected. Otherwise, the Assign
Letterbug command is disabled.
5. Point the Letterbug Configurator at the FCP270 and tap in the toolbar.
The Letterbug Configurator establishes communication with the FCP270 (indicated
by the modules IR active LED lighting), sets the modules letterbug, and then
terminates communication. You are notified of the success or failure of the command
by a status message that appears on your Letterbug Configurator.
6. Connect the Mesh control network fiber optic cables to the FCP270 as instructed in
Field Control Processor 270 Users Guide (B0700AR).
If the letterbug assignment was successful, the FCP270 reboots as described in the
above document.
7. If you are configuring a fault-tolerant FCP270, wait until the primary module lights
the green Operational Status LED and turns off the red LED.
8. Connect the fiber optic cables to the shadow module and install it in the baseplate as
instructed in Field Control Processor 270 Users Guide (B0700AR).
The shadow module boots, receives its FCP270 information from the primary
module, and marries the primary module as described in the above document.
You have now completed assigning a letterbug to either a single or fault-tolerant FCP270. To
assign additional letterbugs, repeat these steps. To change existing letterbugs, change the letterbug
in the CSV file and repeat these steps.

3. Open the CSV file that contains the hardware ID of the desired FCM100Et (see
Figure 5-1).
4. To select the row that contains the hardware ID of the FCM100Et, tap the row
number on the left of the list (see Figure 4-1 on page 21).
Both the hardware ID and letterbug must be selected. Otherwise, the Assign
Letterbug command is disabled.
5. Point the Letterbug Configurator at the FCM100Et and tap in the toolbar.
The Letterbug Configurator establishes communication with the FCM100Et
(indicated by the modules IR active LED lighting), sets the modules letterbug, and
then terminates communication. You are notified of the success or failure of the
command by a status message that appears on your Letterbug Configurator.
6. Install the secondary module in the baseplate as instructed in DIN Rail Mounted FBM
Subsystem Users Guide (B0400FA).
The secondary module boots and acquires its letterbug from the primary module.
7. Connect the Mesh control network fiber optic cables to both FCM100Et modules as
instructed in DIN Rail Mounted FBM Subsystem Users Guide (B0400FA).
8. Place both FCM100Et modules on-line using the System Management displays. Refer
to System Management Displays (B0193JC).

30
5. Operating the Letterbug Configurator B0700AY Rev B

Both FCM100Et modules reboot to request the first time information (MAC
addresses, and IP addresses) from the ZCP270. For normal operation, the state of the
Operational Status LEDs on both modules is off for the red LED and on for the green
LED, and the Master LED is on for one module while the Tracker LED is on for the
other module.
You have now completed assigning a letterbug to a redundant FCM100Et pair. To assign
additional letterbugs, repeat these steps. To change existing letterbugs, change the letterbug in the
CSV file and repeat these steps.

Reading Module Status

The HPS Configurator allows you to read FCP270, ZCP270 and FCM100Et module status
information such as date of manufacture, hardware part number, station MAC address, and so
forth.
To read module status:
1. On the Pocket PC, tap Start > HPS Configurator.
If no file is currently open and files exist in the Foxboro directory, the file window
opens.
2. Open the CSV file that contains the hardware ID or letterbug of the desired module
(see Figure 5-1).
3. Tap the hardware ID or letterbug of the desired module (see Figure 1-1 on page 2).
When using a letterbug, it must not be associated with a hardware ID. Otherwise,
read status is not enable.
4. Point the Pocket PC at the module and tap in the toolbar.
The Pocket PC establishes communication with the module (indicated by the
modules IR active LED lighting), reads the modules status information, and then
terminates communication. Hold the Pocket PC steady for several seconds until data
is gathered. If the read status command fails, you are notified of the failure by a status
message that appears on your device.
