Barack Hussein Obama II1 in American English; Honolulu, Hawaii, August 4, 1961) is an
American politician who was the 44th president of the United States of America from
January 20, 2009 until January 20, 2017.2 [update] He was a senator from the state of
Illinois since On January 3, 2005 until his resignation on November 16, 2008.3 He is also
the fifth African American legislator in the United States Senate, the third since the era of
reconstruction. He was also the first African-American candidate nominated for the
presidency by the Democratic Party and is the first to hold the presidential post.4 He
graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School's prestigious Law School,
where he served as president of the Harvard Law Review. He later worked as a
community organizer and advised his career as a civil rights lawyer before To be elected
senator from the state of Illinois, performing that function from 1997 to 2004. He was a
professor of constitutional law at the University of Chicago School of Law from 1992 to
2004. In 2000 he lost the electoral contest for a position in the US House of
Representatives, and after its previous failure, in January of 2003 announced its candidacy
to the American Senate. In March 2004 he won the Democratic Party primary elections,
and in July of that year he delivered the opening address of the Democratic National
Convention, which prompted his candidacy. He was finally elected a member of the
Senate in November 2004, with 70% of the votes in favor.6 As a representative of the
Democratic minority at the 109th Congress, he and other senators urged the law on
conventional arms control and to promote greater public accountability in the use of federal
funds. He made official trips to Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. At the 110th
Congress it promoted legislation related to lobbyists and electoral fraud, global warming,
nuclear terrorism and the care of military personnel returning to the United States from
military missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since announcing his presidential campaign in
February 2007, Obama has emphasized ending the Iraq War, increasing energy
independence and providing universal health care as the major national networks.7
