Refugees in Malaysia
21 August 2010
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) today welcomes the news
that UNHCR (Malaysia) is giving appointment cards to the
Burmese refugees including Buddhists for the registration in
order to consider for their refugees application.
It is the welcoming good news for the Burmese refugees in
Malaysia who fled from Burma due to military regime’s extreme
persecution.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) applauds the UNHCR
(Malaysia) tireless efforts helping refugees especially today it is
opening the new chapter.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) hopes that UNHCR
(Malaysia) would consider refugees’ application accordingly
and justly.
There are more than 70, 000 Burmese refugees in Malaysia
according to the official figures. Since Malaysia is not party to
the 1951 Refugee Convention or its Protocol, refugees are
vulnerable to detention and deportation.
Burma is made up of with Bamar, Kachin, Kayar, Karean, Chin,
Mon, Arakan and Shan and junta suppresses all the people of
Burma indiscrimately in order to hold on to power.
Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) is the global campaigning and lobbying organisation to restore democracy, human rights
and rule of law in Burma where everyone can enjoy the freedom of speech, press, beliefs, assembly and rule of law that
emphasizes the protection of individual rights. Burma Democratic Concern (BDC) is the registered company in UK, and register
number is 6496926. Register address: 2nd Floor, 145-157, St John Street, London, United Kingdom, EC1V 4PY.
But in the past; sadly, Buddhist Burmese refugees were
marginalised when they applied for the refugees due to the
unreasonable assumptions of the some UNHCR (Malaysia)
officers that Burma junta won’t suppress Bamar and Buddhists.
Since May 2010, the Burma Democratic Concern (BDC)
publicly called for UN High Commissioner for Refugees Mr
António Guterres and UNHCR Head Office to investigate the
alleged reports of discrimination in UNHCR (Malaysia).
