My Classroom Management Beliefs

I want to have fun with my students. I want them to understand how loved and valuable

they are. I want to be there for my students, and offer them a safe place for them to grow,

explore, and be themselves. I want them to know how powerful their minds are and how much

potential they have. However in order for any of this to happen effective classroom management

needs to be in place. Like Wong, I want to present, teach, and reinforce procedures and rules

from day one so that students know exactly how things will go in my classroom. I will

consistently enforce rules so that students will not be able to get in the way of their own learning

(Wong & Wong, 2009). However I will do this in a way that avoids energizing negative

behavior, but gives energy to the positive, like the nurtured heart approach suggests (Jozwiak,

n.d.). Students will be treated firmly, especially at the beginning of the year. However, as

Dreikurs suggests, students will be treated with respect, and they will get a chance to work with

the teacher in a democratic way to have a voice in how they would like to be treated through the

creation of a class motto (Soheili, et al, 2015, p. 443). This will ultimately create the space that is

necessary for my students and I to really explore the material will all sorts of fun activities and

experiences. Without good classroom management the development of positive student-teacher

relationships and the participation in fun activities that provide authentic learning would not be

possible.

If my procedures are not followed

Procedures are not the same as rules in that procedures do not have consequences when

they are broken. I will introduce and teach procedures on the first day, and remind and enforce

procedures extensively through out the first few weeks of school. When a procedure is forgotten

and not followed I will ask the student what the procedure is, and I will ask them to do what they

did again in the correct way. For example, if a student gets up to sharpen their pencil in the

middle of a lecture I will say, Sam, what is the procedure for sharpening your pencil? Do you

think this is an appropriate time to sharpen your pencil? Youre right that it is not, please take a

seat until the group activity and then you can sharpen your pencil. If your pencil no longer writes

please quietly ask to barrow a writing utensil from your neighbor. If a procedure is consistently

not followed it may need to turn into a rule and give a consequence for when it is not followed.

For example, if students consistently talk during the announcements I may need to add silence

during the announcements to the rule list and pass out infraction notices if a student is talking

during an announcement (Wong & Wong, 2009, p. 169, 190-191).

10

Maintaining Appropriate Behavior

Creating Norms:

I know that there are many good reasons to have students help in the creation of norms,

but as a first year teacher I am not comfortable going into the first day of school without a clear

plan that I am ready to present, implement, and that I already have on posters B for the students

to see. Because of this I will be creating expectations for my students months before they ever

step into the classroom so that I can make sure I have thought through every angle and

consequence of the plan so that I can comfortably and consistently execute this plan. However, I

will have students help in the creation of a class team motto of how we want to treat each other.

In this way we can still hold each other accountable and students will feel like they have had a

say in the creation of the classroom environment.

My Classroom Expectations/Norms:

In this classroom I expect students to:

1. Be in their seat with all learning materials when the bell rings

2. Respect all members of the class

3. Respect class property

4. Raise their hand before they speak

5. Keep their, hands, feet, and all objects to themselves

6. Remain seated until the teacher dismisses the class (the bell does not dismiss the class)

7. Follow directions the first time they are given without complaining (Wong & Wong,

2009, p. 152)

Enforcing Norms/Expectations:
11

When an expectation is broken a teacher needs to consistently deliver a consequence in

order to maintain an organized classroom environment. Due to my personality I prefer

consequences that do not single out kids and involve yelling. I will have a three-tiered system of

consequences just in case the behavior is continuous. Before I start on the three-tiered system I

will begin with proximity control and non-verbal cues that the student is misbehaving. If the

student is not getting the hint I will begin the first consequence.

The first consequence will be an infraction notice C. I will simply walk over, without

interrupting instructions, and place the infraction notice form on the students desk. The notice

will say: I have broken rule number _______. I understand that there will be a consequence if I

continue this behavior or break any other rule in class today ______________. Additional

comments: ___________. The teacher will write the number of the broken rule on the first line

and the student will sign their name on the second line and place it on my desk after class. I may

choose to write something like see me after class or Feel free to ask for help in the additional

comments section if I believe that more explanation, support, or correction is needed.

If the behavior continues, or if the student breaks a different rule, I will simply walk over

to the student and place a filled out detention form D on their desk. (Note: This will only work if

my school wide discipline plan includes detentions for misbehaving students. If the school does

in school suspensions I will do that instead. If my school has no school wide discipline plan I

will personally oversee a detention for misbehaving students either during lunch or after school.)

The student will need to bring the form home for their parents to sign and serve a detention after

school or during lunch the next day. The student will need to bring the form back to me with the

detention teachers signature and their parents signature so that I know that the detention was

served. I will also e-mail or call the students parents to let them know about the incident. If the
12

behavior still continues, or if the student breaks a different rule, I will ask the student to go to the

principals office. I will send the student with the infraction notice and the detention slip so that

the principal knows that the behavior continued through two other interventions before the

student got to him or her.

What if the behavior is sever

I will inform my students that any sever break of the rules will result in the student

immediately going to the principals office and a call home to their parents. I will list some sever

behaviors (like fighting, screaming or other sever disruptions, severely disrespectful language,

and cheating) so that students understand what a sever behavior problem is.

Repetitive behavior issues

I will record all behavior incidences in a word document E for each hour so that I can

track how often the same student has an issue. I will also save all infraction notices and detention

forms for a semester in a folder for each hour so that I have documentation of addressing the

issue. If the same student keeps having an issue I will ask him or her to meet with me after

school. Then I will ask the student to explain why they need help following the rules. In this way

we can try to work together to come up with a solution to their behavior problem. We will write

our solution down and both sign it. During this meeting I will try not to be accusatory or fight

with the student, I will simply ask the student how we can work together to solve the problem.

What if the management plan is not working?

If my classroom management plan does not seem to be working I may need to try

different behavior specific logical consequences. For example sometimes I may move a student

to the back of the classroom for isolation instead of sending them to the principals office. I may

also need to re-direct the students energy by giving them a classroom task to preform. I will also
13

communicate with the students parents and other teachers to try to come up with a better way to

work with those students. If nothing works I will collaborate with my principal to come up with a

better plan.

Rewards

If I do not need to issue any infraction notices in a day of class I will place a bean inside

that class mason jar. If the students go above and beyond I may put extra beans in the jar that

day. When the class fills the jar to a tapeline they can cash in their beans for their choice of

cookies, free Friday, or game day. However, if the class as a whole is misbehaving (maybe by

wasting time with talking) I may take a bean out of the jar. In this way each class will work

together to achieve the desired behavior standard and I can tangibly reward in order to influence

behavior (Culatta, 2015).

14

Classroom Environment: Intangible

Open for Exploration:

The point of school is for students to learn. As George Evans said, Every student can

learn. Just not on the same day, or in the same way ("27 Quotes about Teaching," 2014).

Learning is a natural process that children naturally pursue and love. Children have passions and

interests that they naturally pursue and explore. However I have personally experienced and

observed students who are so bogged down by the mass amounts of requirements and

inflexibility of schoolwork that they no longer feel that they have enough time or resources to

pursue their interests. In my classroom I want students to feel free to explore their interests,

whether that be seeing their interest through the lenses of social studies or biology (ex. Looking

at the history of music, or the mental processes that are involved in music making) or by

exploring the subject matter using their interest (ex. Using video, baking, art, dance, math, or

other mediums to apply biology or social studies concepts). This will be done by offering

students choices. One example of this is using a learning menu F. Also, I want students to feel

like they have time to ask questions about class topics that they are interested in instead of

rushing students to cover every standard. This may be done by using once a week exploration

time, where the students are allowed to ask any question related to the subject matter, and we

will explore the answer together. Furthermore I want students to have resources available that

will allow them to explore on their own. Covering standards is important, but helping students

explore and grow their knowledge in a way that helps them actually enjoy the life long process

and skill of learning is more important.

Support Individuality
15

Again, all students are different, and that is a good thing. I have never met someone who

I could not learn something from. Students are no exception. Their individuality should not be

extinguished in order for them to fit into a one-size fits all mold of education. Students all learn

in different ways, so teachers should teach in many different ways to support student

individuality. In my class I hope to diversify the learning styles I cater to so that all learners will

feel comfortable gleaning information. Also, no matter what needs, interests, culture,

circumstances, or background my students come form, they will be respected and celebrated.

Students in my classroom should feel safe to be themselves, because they are enough just the

way they are. I hope to foster this attitude in my students by modeling it myself, by keeping a

strong no-bullying policy, and by allowing students space to talk about things that make them

unique.

Teamwork

Students will all be different, as a teacher it is my job not only to meet them where they

are at, but also to help them all feel like they belong. Our class will be a team. In a team we work

together for success, and celebrate it when it happens. When one of our team members does

something great, our response will be celebration, not jealousy. We will encourage each other

and cheer each other on. In a team we will seek to respect and understand each other with the

understanding that we are all needed and valued parts of the classroom. We will always speak to

each other respectfully, even when we disagree. This will be accomplished through modeling

this attitude. I also plan on doing team-building activities near the beginning of the year. I will

correct students who are talking to their team members negatively and I will celebrate students

who are using good teamwork skills. Opportunities to work together will be given so that
16

students get to interact with their teammates. Furthermore at the beginning of the year students

will work together to create a team motto for how they will treat each other.

Safe

Students should feel safe and know exactly what to do in my classroom. After all,

according to Maslows hierarchy of needs students will not pursue their full potential, seek

accomplishment, or make friends until they feel safe and have their basic needs met. If a teacher

wants their students to accomplish tasks and reach their full potential then their basic and safety

needs need to be met. As a teacher, if I can do anything to help meet these needs I will

(McLeold, 2007). I will not be a friend to my students, but I will care about all of my student, not

just their learning. In my classroom learning activities will be diversified, the procedures and

rules of the classroom will stay consistent. The environment will be neat, organized, warm, and

kind. I hope that in a turbulent world my classroom will be a place of safety and certainty. I will

try to accomplish this by telling my students that I care about them, and that if something is

rough in their life they can talk to me about it. However I will be appropriate with what they tell

me, which means if they tell me something that needs to be reported I will report it, but if it is

not something that needs reporting I want students too feel like they can trust me. Furthermore, if

students feel unsafe because of something that happened or was said during class I will let them

know that I want to hear about it and I will do something about it. Also I will consistently

enforce the procedures and rules in my classroom so that the environment stays calm and

understandable.

Classroom Environment: Tangible

Open for Exploration

o Each unit will have tangible items for the student to manipulate on the counter.

This may include objects like invertebrate shells, plants, books, articles, pictures,

time period specific antiques, objects common in other countries, microscopes

and slides, and more. Because school is about learning, this station will allow

students to explore the information further if they are curious and wish to do so.

o The bulletin board and maps give the student additional resources to explore the

material.

o In a social studies classroom the shelf at the back allows students to take home

books that will help them explore their interests further.

o Connection between a computer and a projector will allow the class to explore the

world and answer questions together using the Internet.

Supports Individuality

o Each unit will have tangible items for the student to manipulate on the counter.

This station is especially helpful for students with a kinesthetic or naturalistic

learning style. This may include objects like invertebrate shells, plants, books,

articles, pictures, time period specific antiques, objects common in other

countries, antiques, microscopes and slides, and more. Because school is about

learning, this station will allow students to explore the information further

independently if they are curious and wish to do so. It allows students to embrace

information that appeals to them individually ("8 types of learning styles," n.d.).
19

o The bulletin board is especially helpful for visual learners to understand the

information ("8 types of learning styles," n.d.).

o The library in the back of the classroom is especially helpful for linguistic and

intrapersonal learners. It will also help students focus on what they are personally

interested in ("8 types of learning styles," n.d.).

o The set up of desks in learning partnerships is especially helpful for interpersonal

and linguistic learners ("8 types of learning styles," n.d.).

Teamwork

o The student desks are set up in learning partnerships so that students can work

together.

o Team mottos that the students work together to write will be posted on bulletin

boards in the room.

Safe

o The classroom is set up in a way that clutter does not restrict or endanger

movement.

o The trays for each class hour will allow the students and the teacher to keep

turned in work organized so they have certainty their work is getting to the right

place.

o The catch up folder helps allows students to know and collect exactly what they

missed while they were out of the classroom.

o Assignments and bell work, as well as class materials are always in the same

place so that students know where to find them (Wong & Wong, 2009, p.123-

125).

8:00a.m. Great students at the door when they come in. Ask for their name, let them know how

excited I am to be their teacher, and tell them that their first assignment is on their desk. Hand

then a full sheet of paper with a desk number written in one of the corners. Let them know that

this will be their assigned seat.

(note: their fist assignment is a get to know you questionnaire G, but the first instruction on the

questionnaire will be to take the full sheet of paper I handed them with their seat number on it

and make it into a nametag.)

8:05a.m. The late bell rings. Ask students to continue working on their assignment quietly

while I take role. If some have not yet made their nametag, I will thank the students who already

made their nametag in the hopes that the other students will catch on.

8:10a.m. Begin introduction and discussion of expectations, consequences, and procedures:

Welcome students to (Social Studies or Biology) class. I am so very excited to work with

you this year. My name is Miss. Vander Hill. A little bit about me, I love going on adventures

outside, exploring, camp, spending time with my family and friends, singing, and baking

desserts. I graduated from Spring Arbor Universitys School of education with a major in Social

studies and a minor in Biology, so I am qualified to work with you this year. I cant wait to learn

more about you through your bell work, and through a game at the end of class today. This is

going to be a year full of fantastic learning. I promise you that if you put the work in that you

will be successful. I am here because I care about you and I want you to succeed. I am not here
21

to trick you, to make your life miserable, or to fail you. I am here to help you learn and explore.

In this class you will succeed if you put in the effort and you can expect to be treated with

respect.

Thank you so much for already getting started on your bell work; bell work is something

that you can expect to do every day. I am sure that you are wondering what you can expect to be

doing every day in class besides bell work. We will go over our classroom rules and procedures

next so that you can feel confident and safe knowing exactly what to expect every day in the

classroom. These rules and procedures are for you, so that you can be successful and get the

most out of our learning time together.

Expectations:

Please direct your attention to this poster at the front of the room. I am also passing out a

contract H with the rules and procedures for this class listed. On the poster and on the first page

of the contract the Expectations are listed. These are meant to keep you safe and to keep the

classroom environment open for learning and exploration. Please read the first expectation with

me: In this classroom students will be in their seat with all learning materials when the bell rings.

You already did a great job following this expectation this morning. This expectation is in place

because I do not want to waist any of your learning time.

Lets read expectation two next: In this classroom students will respect all members of

the class. This rule is my favorite because everyone deserves respect no matter who they are or

what they are doing. To put it in simpler terms this means no bullying, no put downs, and no

interrupting. It means listening and speaking in a way that makes others feel good rather than

bad. It means behaving in a way that you are not hurting, distracting, or taking anything from

anyone. This becomes especially important during labs when we are handling potentially
22

dangerous materials. You will respect me, you will respect your classmates, and you will respect

yourself. You have so much potential and your brain is so powerful. You can do amazing things

right now, please respect yourself and act on your potential. You can expect that I will follow

this rule too.

Now lets read expectation three: In this classroom students will respect class property.

This again is especially important during labs.

Please read expectation four with me: Students will raise their hand before they speak.

This is something that you have practiced since kindergarten and you know keeps classroom

discussion organized.

Next lets read expectation five: Students will keep their hands, feet, and all objects to

themselves. This is for safety, especially during labs, but also just to makes sure you do not

annoy your neighbors.

And finally expectation six: This says in this classroom students will remain seated until

the teacher dismisses the class (the bell does not dismiss the class). This again is to make sure

that we do not waist any of your learning time. I will not abuse this in order to make you late for

all of your classes, remember I will respect your time.

Are there any questions about these expectations?

Please sign the line on the last page of your contract that indicates you understand the

rules and you agree to abide by them.

Consequences

Now lets turn to the next page and talk about consequences. In my class each day is a

new chance. However every broken rule will be addressed with a consequence. There are three

levels of consequences. Consequence number one is a type of warning called an infraction

23

notice. There is a copy of it in your contract for you to see. When you break one of the rules I

will simply fill this out and walk it over to you. I dont want to yell at you or embarrass you, but

I do expect you to follow the rules, and will hold you accountable. You will only get one

infraction notice, which serves as your one warning, even if you break a different rule. This is

because I know you know the rules, and you are old enough to control your own behavior. The

notice says I have broken rule number _______. On this line I will write the number of the rule

that you have broken so that you know what you are in trouble for. Next it says: I understand

that there will be a consequence if I continue this behavior or break any other rule in class today.

_____________. After you have read the notice you must sign it on this line. In the additional

comments section I may choose to write something else like see me after class or feel free to

ask for help. You are also welcome to write something in this space if you feel I was mistaken

in issuing the infraction notice, for example, if you were talking out of turn because you were

helping your friend find the correct page. Remember, I will be respectful to you in the additional

comments section, please be respectful to me in return. After class place the completed infraction

notice on my desk.

If you break another rule during class, even if it is a different rule than the rule you broke

before, the next consequence is a detention. Again I will fill it out and walk it over to you. This

step also includes an e-mail or call home. Detentions will either be served the next day after

school or the next day during lunch. You need to collect all of the signatures, and turn the

detention form back in to me after you have the signatures and you have served the detention.

The last consequence, if you break another rule after both the infraction notice and the

detention, will be a trip to the principals office. You will go strait there, bringing the detention
24

form and infraction notice with you. Please show respect to yourself and refuse to get in the way

of your learning so that you never have to go all the way to this point.

Are there any questions about these consequences?

All right, please sign your name indicating that you understand that any misbehavior will

bring about these consequences and turn the page so that we can go over class procedures.

Procedures:

Once again these are for you in order for you to know exactly what to do in the classroom

so we can maintain a classroom environment that supports exploration. The first procedure

involves how I will get your attention. When you are working on a group activity and I need

your attention back on me I will say 1,2,3 and then we will all say Zip together. Then I

expect your eyes on me and mouth closed. Lets practice this, when I say the magic word

pineapple you can turn to your neighbors and talk about something. However when you hear me

say 1,2,3 remember to say zip and bring your attention back to me. Practice a few times,

then bring them back to attention.

The next procedure is my phone policy. During class I do not want to see you on your

phones unless I say that you can use them for a project or for research. This means keep your

phones in your pockets unless I say otherwise.

You have already experienced this procedure. Everyday you will have a bell work

assignment when you come into class. You will not be graded on whether or not you got the

answer right, but you will be graded on effort, so you do need to do the assignment.

Once your assignment is done you will need to turn it in. Lets practice this procedure

right now. Dont do it yet, but when I say the magic word ninja skills you will pass your paper all

the way up to the front of your column. Once the person at the front of the column has all of their
25

columns papers than they will pass their papers to the right. Once the person in the front right

has all of the classs papers than they will put the papers in this classs try. Lets practice this.

Ninja skills.

When an announcement comes through the PA system I expect you to get quiet

immediately and listen, even if the announcement does not pertain to you. This is because your

neighbor may need to here the announcement.

When you are tardy to class, you are excused, and you have a pass just place your pass on

my desk and take a seat. You can still get full credit for your bell work, just write tardy excused

on your paper if you do not have enough time. If you are tardy unexcused take an infraction

notice off my desk and fill it out. That is your one warning for the day. You also may not get full

credit for your bell work unless you still have enough time to finish it.

When you would like to barrow a book from the class library you may. All you have to

do is write your name, the title of the book, the date you checked it out, and the day you returned

it. Please try to keep all book check outs to under a month.

Now lets go over what you will do when you need something. Most of these procedures

involve you waiting for an appropriate time. What is an appropriate time? Thats right, when you

are not interrupting someone speaking to the entire class. The first of these procedures is asking

to use the restroom. Notice I have a pass for the mens room and a pass for the womens room.

This means that only one boy and one girl can go to use the restroom at once. How you ask to

use the bathroom is by putting crossed fingers in the air. I will either nod my head yes or shake

my head no to let you know if you are allowed to go. Then quietly grab the pass and come back

promptly. Try to only ask to use the restroom during an appropriate time, but I understand

emergencies happen.
26

When you desire to leave the room for any other reason, to get a book or a drink, wait for

an appropriate time, raise your hand and ask. I will say yes or no, and then you can grab this

generic hall pass. Be back promptly please.

If you forgot a pencil, before class begins you can take a pencil out of this jar and write

your name on the board. After class return the pencil, freshly sharpened, and erase your name.

If you need to sharpen your pencil wait until an appropriate time and then dont ask, just

do it. If your pencil breaks and it is not an appropriate time quietly ask your neighbor if you can

barrow a pencil.

If you need a tissue you do not need to wait for an appropriate time, just get up and get a

tissue. Please make sure to properly dispose of the tissue and sanitize your hands.

If you need to throw anything else away hold onto it at your desk until the appropriate

time, and then you can get up without asking to throw it away.

If you need to staple or tape something wait until the appropriate time.

(For social studies) Feel free to quietly snack in this class. (For Biology) Never eat or

drink in this class. This is a lab safety issue, it is not meant to be mean, it is meant to protect you

from ingesting something harmful.

If you need additional help outside of class feel free to talk to me about it. I would be

more than happy to meet with you. My job is to help you learn.

These next few procedures have to do with emergencies. The first is, if you feel like you

are going to puke you do not need to ask to the bathroom or grab a hall pass. Just run, and grab

the trashcan on your way out.

If the fire alarm goes off, stop what you are doing, leave your things, and exit the

building calmly.
27

If there is a lock down we will stand over here absolutely silently.

If there is a tornado quietly bring your book out into the hallway, sit against the lockers

and protect your head.

The next few procedure have to do with missed, late, or incorrect school work. If you

miss a day of school do not ask me what we did that day, ask your learning partner. Then go

check the catch up folder to grab any papers your learning partner said you missed. If

homework was turned in the day you missed just put your homework in the tray for your class.

Your homework is due the day you come back, unless you miss multiple days. In that case talk to

me and we can decide a fair due date. If you miss a test or a quiz you need to be prepared to take

it the day you come back, unless you miss multiple days. In this case see me and we can talk

about a fair test date.

If you turn in your homework late without being absent you will loose ten percent each

day it is late unless you make special arrangements with me ahead of time. If a paper gets turned

in to me without a name I will place it in the no-name folder after it is graded, but I will not put

the grade in the system. Once you notice you are missing a grade you can find your paper in this

folder, write your name on it, and turn it back in.

If you do not like your quiz, test, or homework grade you can re-answer the questions

you got wrong and staple the original to the new. You can get one extra credit point for each new

correct answer.

That is all the procedures. Are there any questions?

Please sign that you understand the contract, rip off the signature page and keep the rules,

consequences, and procedures list in your folder for future reference.

Supplies
28

For this class you will need a sturdy folder, scrap paper, writing utensils, and your

internet devices. Please bring these to class every day.

8:40a.m. Activity snowball fight

You have been listening so well for such a long time. Lets take a break to review these

procedures. I know it is only September but lets have a snowball fight. When I say the magic

word Christmas in September take out a scrap sheet of paper, rip it in half, write one of the

procedures on one half and write the classroom business the procedure will achieve on the other.

For example, on one half you might write cross your fingers and wait for the teacher to nod yes,

then grab a pass and quietly leave the room, and on the other half write when you have to go to

the bathroom. Any questions? After you are done writing, crinkle up the paper, and start

throwing them at your friends. Continue until the music stops; pick up a snowball, and work

together to match up the two parts.

8:55a.m. Closure

For tomorrow I would like you to start thinking about how you would like us, as a class

team to treat each other. We will work together to write a team motto for our class, then we will

play a name game to get to know each other better. Before the bell rings, can someone please tell

me what the rule is for leaving the room? Thats right, the bell does not dismiss you, I dismiss

you. Bell rings. Class dismissed, Im looking forward to tomorrow.

Second day of School

Greet students at the door again.

Bell work:

Written on the board: Please write down a few thoughts about how you would like to be treated

by the class. We will share these and write a team motto.

29

8:10a.m. Class Motto writing:

Alright class thank you for beginning to brainstorm the class motto already. I would like us to get

a chance to share our thoughts about how we want to be treated in the class. I will write them on

the bored and then we can work together on how to string the thoughts together into a motto.

Who would like to share your thought first?

Take and write down ideas on the bored.

Alright great list! How can we string these together into a motto?

Take suggestions. Take a vote.

I like this motto! I will turn it into a poster and have it posted next class.

8:35a.m. Name Game:

For the rest of the hour I want us to spend some time getting to know our team by playing

a name game. How this works is you will pick a word that describes you or has something to do

with you that also starts with the first letter of your first name. So if your name was Brittney and

you like biking you could say biking Brittany, or if your name was Tom and you are tall you

could say tall Tom. Each time a new person says their name and descriptor we will repeat all of

the other names in order. The goal is to memories everyones name. At the end if we have

enough time we can have a competition to see who memorized the names best.

8:55a.m. Closure

Thank you for participating! Tomorrow we will begin exploring our subject matter, but

lets keep this team attitude throughout the year as we try to get to know each other better.

Remember to wait for me to dismiss you before you stand up, even if the bell rings. You are

dismissed. Have a great day!

30

Transitions and Sponges

Transitions and sponges are both needed to capture all of the available moments of

learning time. Transitions help to give students a clear picture of what they should be doing in

order to keep students from filling the chaotic times with negative behavior. Sponges fill extra

time with valuable learning, which again keeps students from filling the chaotic time with

negative behavior.

Transitions:

Timer

o Pulling a timer up on the bored when I give my students an activity to do will help

them see how much time they have so that they will work faster.

o When there are about six seconds left I can say refocus on me in five, four, three,

two, one.

o Or, when I have students at different stations I could say switch stations in five,

four, three, two, one.

Magic Word

o When giving instructions, students often what to start moving before the teacher

is done giving instructions

o To combat this, before giving instructions say: when I say the magic word (insert

funny word, like periwinkle, or unicorn glitter) then follow with instructions.

o For example, When I say the magic word llama drama I would like you to grab

your iPad and your worksheet and go find a partner that is wearing the same color

shirt as you. Llama drama.

31

Bell work

o As a rule students will need to be seated with all their materials when the bell

rings.

o If they are tardy excused students will put their pass on my desk. If they are tardy

unexcused they will pick up and fill out an infraction notice from my desk.

o There will be a bell work assignment on the bored or on their desk that they will

be expected to get to work on right away.

o In this way the first minutes of class time will not be wasted because students will

be held accountable for being late and students will be expected to get to work

right away.

Teacher dismissal

o As a rule, the bell does not dismiss the student, the teacher does.

o I will have a well rehearsed and re-enforced rule that students must remain in their

seats until the teacher dismisses them, even if this occurs after the bell has rung.

Sponges:

Social studies

Current Event Discovery: 5-10min

o Go on the Internet and read an article on a news website such as BBC or CNN.

o Discover and take brief notes (No more than two sentences) on four questions:

Why is this happening? (This may involve geography, history, or politics

background. For example, if the article is about a hurricane the why is this

happening involves geography and weather patterns.)

Who is being effected?

32

How are they being effected?

What can be done to stop or help the people effected? (If the article is

about something bad happening) OR Why is this a step in the right

direction? (If the article is about something good happening)

o This will help students gain a bigger picture of the world they live in as well as

find the good and the bad in situations.

Current event pair share: 20min

o Follow the above process for finding and pondering a current event.

o Turn and present to your elbow partner about your article and the four questions.

o This will help students learn how to discuss current events with their peers.

Google earth Field Trip: 7min

o Have students log on to the school computer or ipad and enter the google earth

app.

o Give students options of coordinates they could type in and search.

o Instruct students that on a scrap piece of paper, once you discover where you are

and explore, write down where your address lead you and the most interesting

feature of your location.

o If you have more time, pick another address and again write where it led you and

the most interesting feature of that location.

o This will help students learn how to use Google earth as well as give them a look

at the important location.

Biology

Scientific name discovery: 7min

33

o Give students a list of animal genus species names and instruct students to Google

one of them.

o Instruct students to answer these questions about the animal they chose on a scrap

piece of paper:

What animal did you choose from the above list?

What is its common name?

What is your animals natural habitat?

Is your animal a vertebrate or invertebrate?

In your opinion, what is the most interesting thing about your animal?

o This will help students understand how scientific genus species names work.

Conservationist: 7min

o Go to: https://www.worldwildlife.org/species/directory

o Quickly scan through the list of endangered species

o Imagine you are a conservation biologist that has just received a large grant.

Which animal from this list would you try to save and why?

o Write the answer to this question on a scrap sheet of paper.

o This will help students grow an awareness of which animals are endangered.

Both

Question clarification: 3-5min

o Instruct students to skim through their notes and find something they have a

question about.

o Students will ask their learning partner that question.

o If both do not know the answer they will write the question on the bored.
34

o After there are some questions on the bored the teacher will answer those

questions for the whole class.

o This will help the teacher and students recognize which concepts need more

explanation.

Exploration time: 3-5min

o Allow students to ask a questions about anything subject matter related.

o If the teacher does not know the answer the class will brainstorm together, or even

look the answer up.

o This helps students develop an individual interest in the topic as well as learn how

to discover answers to their questions.

Favorite Quick Write: 3min

o Ask student to choose their favorite part of something we were studying or

something that is happening soon, and write a paragraph on it using proper

grammar.

o For example, if we were studying Europe in Geography I could ask my students

to write about their favorite food that comes from Europe.

o Another example could be, if we were studying invertebrates in biology, I could

ask my students to write about their favorite invertebrate that they have seen.

o This activity is helpful because it will show me if students can apply and

recognize the information in their life, and it will help students link the

information to their own life.

35

Communication Plan
Who will I communicate with? When will I communicate with them?

Students

Why?

o Students are the people who I will be in direct contact with every day.

o I want there to be a direct line of transparent communication with my students so

that we can always aim to be on the same page.

When?

o It is essential that I communicate well with my students every day.

o I even desire to be available during and after school hours, however I will practice

some self care by being unavailable from 9pm-7:30am.

How?

o I will send my students a letter I before the first day of school that lists supplies

they might need, our learning goals for this year, a little bit about me, as well as a

list of rules.

o I will set up a remind.com account for my classes in order to be able to text

student reminders like Dont forget to bring an empty two litter for todays lab!

or Remember to study for todays quiz on chapter 6: the Renaissance.

Remind.com does not allow the teacher to have access to the students

phone numbers, so it protects the students while still allowing text

reminders to be sent.
36

Students can also send the teacher texts via remind.com, so it will allow

students to ask questions at any time as well.

o I will also keep whatever LMS my school uses up to day with assignments, links,

resources, and grades.

o I will give all students adequate feedback on their homework and tests and return

them in a timely manner.

o I will keep office hours where students can come in and ask me questions or

receive extra help. I think that these hours may be an hour everyday after school.

Parents and Guardians

Why?

o My students, even if some will be in their upper teens, will all be minors and

under the care of an adult.

o I want the students parents and guardians to be on my team as we work together

to help their student become college and career ready.

When?

o I will be available to meet with parents personally after school on weekdays,

especially during parent teacher conferences.

o I will also be available via e-mail and over the school phone, and over

remind.com texts during school hours and up until 9pm.

How?

o I will send a separate letter J to the parents of my students at the beginning of the

school year. This letter will contain an invitation to work together in helping their

student become college and career ready. My e-mail, work phone, and
37

instructions on how to join remind.com. The letter will also contain our learning

targets, a list of rules, a little bit about me, and a list of supplies desired.

o I will also call the parent with a positive thing to say about their student within the

first week, so if I ever have to call a parent about anything negative it will not be

the first time I have called.

o I will keep parents informed about conferences through e-mail K.

o I will keep the schools learning management system up to date with grades so

that parents can monitor their students progress.

o I will allow parents to join the same remind.com account their student uses for my

classes so that they get the same text reminders their students do.

o I will e-mail L parents about any opportunities to chaperone field trips or help in

other ways.

o I will send permission slip forms home with students for parents to sign.

o If a student misbehaves I will either call or e-mail M the parent, and keep record N

of the contact.

Para professionals and other classroom helpers

Why?

o Everyone that is in working in the classroom should be on the same page and the

same team in order to be able to help students learn.

When?

o Before the school day begins I will communicate with anyone who will be in my

classroom about what will be happening in the classroom on that day so that if
38

they have any questions or need any supplies we will be able to work together on

those.

How?

o I will e-mail my unit plans to any aids or paraprofessionals before we begin.

o I will also connect with them as soon as they enter the classroom so that we can

problem solve any last minute needs that arose.

Special education teachers

Why?

o Every student can learn, but many need extra help.

o The special education teacher is an amazing resource that I can brainstorm with to

help my students with IEPs learn.

When?

o I will read IEPs as soon as I receive them and contact the special education

teacher if I have any questions on how to provide the accommodations listed.

o I will contact him or her if I have any questions or concerns about my students

How?

o I will e-mail him or her often

o I will also stop by their room if they are comfortable with that

Subject area teaching team

Why?

o Creating curriculum that meets the needs of diverse learners is hard, but

teamwork with other teachers will help.

o My colleges can be incredible sources for effective ideas and lessons

39

When?

o I will try to set up a weekly meeting with my teaching team so that we can work

together.

o I will also contact them as needed

How?

o I will see them every day, so face to face communication will not be much of an

issue

o I will also e-mail them questions or resources as needed

Principal

Why?

o The principal is not only my boss, but also an experienced teacher who has

immense knowledge, skill, and resources.

o We need to work together in order to help our students succeed.

When?

o Before school begins to make sure that I have their approval and support of my

management plan and instruction plans.

o Whenever I have questions or concerns about students.

o Whenever I want to take my students on field trips or purchase new lab or hands

on equipment.

How?

o I will send students down to him with an infraction notice explaining what is

going on.

o I will call him when there are urgent issues.

40

o I will e-mail him to make appointments if I have questions or concerns that will

require a conference.

School Employees

Why?

o There are many people who make what happens at school possible.

o All of us need to collaborate in order for our students school experience to be a

success.

When?

o I will introduce myself and begin to get to know my colleges in person.

o I will contact custodial staff when things in the classroom get really messy with

an apology for my students.

o I will contact coaches when their players seem to be falling behind in my class.

How?

o Most of my correspondence with school staff will be done with E-mail.

o Some of my correspondence with school staff will also be face to face.

Field Trip Site

Why?

o In order for my students to have first hand experience with some information field

trips can be extremely effective.

o Field trips take extensive amounts of communication and planning.

When?

o I will start working out the details of a field trip with people at the field trip site at

least two months before the field trip happens.

41

o I will have students fill out and return any waivers to me three weeks before the

trip so that I can get any permission slips the site needs to the site.

o I will send the official count of students that are coming with us one week before

the trip.

o I will be sensitive to their office hours or weekend.

o I will send a thank you note O after the field trip is over.

How?

o I will contact the field trip using their preferred form of communication.

o I will have students help me write the thank you card after the trip.

Substitute teacher

Why?

o Learning still needs to happen even when the teacher is absent.

o Substitute teaching is so much harder when there is not an engaging lesson plan in

place for the sub to implement.

When?

o If the sub company that my school uses has an option to upload the lesson plan, or

if I know the sub personally, I will provide the lesson plan ahead of time.

o If not, I will leave a detailed plan as well as a welcome letter on my clean desk.

How?

o I will upload or e-mail my lesson plan to the sub if possible.

o I will print off the lesson and a letter of introduction P and leave them on my desk

for the sub.

Cell Biology Learning Menu

Instructions: Choose one of the following assignments for your homework for this unit.
Remember that the assignment is due the class day before the test, INSERT DATE HERE.

1. Cell Cake! Make a Eukaryotic (plant or animal) cell out of cake (or some other type of
food). Feel free to be as creative as you like. Make sure to include all of the organelles
that we discussed in class. Be able to show the teacher which organelle is which when
you turn in the assignment. If enough students choose this project we can have a cell
eating party during our review game!

2. Cell Story Time! Write a story about what happens inside of the eukaryotic cell. Be as
creative as you like. This story could be a dramatic tale about teamwork between the
organelles or an adventure of a newly synthesized protein (and the process of how it
came to be). If you are unsure if your story will fit what I am looking for be free to run
your idea by me. The story should include a full view of one of the cell processes we
talked about and it should be at least three pages in length.

3. Extra Lab! Find another source of cells and come in after school on the open lab days to
view them with the compound microscope. The open lab days before the due date are
INSERT DATES HERE. Everything that is organic, or once living, is made out of cells,
so cells are almost everywhere. Feel free to be as creative as you like with where you find
the cells, but a few fun options might be checking your dogs cheek cells, viewing pond
water from a pond near your house, looking at onion skin, yogurt bacteria, or seeing your
boogers up close and personal. Attempt to take a picture of the cells you see with your
phone (I can show you how to do this) and email the picture, as well as where you found
the cells, what you found interesting about the cells, and why you think these cells appear
the way they do (what function do these cells do that require these structures)? The
picture and the answers to all the questions need to be sent to me for full credit.

4. Cell comparison power point! Make a power point or prezi presentation that compares
at least 7 different types of cells. For full credit please include at least two prokaryotic
cells, at least one eukaryotic unicellular organism, at least one plant cell, and at least one
animal cell. On each slide make sure to include the scientific name of the cell (for single
celled organisms, this is the genus species name of the organism, for multicellular
organisms this is the genus species name of the organism and location the cell came
from), a picture of the cell, the cells function, and a few fun facts about the cell. Be as
creative as you like for which cells you choose. A few fun ones to look up might be
different kinds of bacteria, paramecium, ameba, pollen, bacteria, kidney cells, intestine
lining cells, and more. Please include a citation slide. You will not actually be presenting
the slides, just email them to me.
