Standard:

1.N.1.5 (Find a number that is 10 more or 10 less than a number)

First Lesson or Review?: Review

Aim: Scholars will be able to find a number that is 10 more or 10 less than a number

Assessment and Criteria for Success:

SWBAT use a number chart to find 10 more and 10 less when 1 more and 1 less is already filled

in. Students will understand that when you look at a 120s chart and move up it is 10 less and

move down it is 10 more.

Potential confusions or prior confusions: On day 1, Ss mixed up more vs less. Also, 9.1 did 1

more and 1 less too. Ss understood 1 more than 10 but still mixed up more and less.

Key Points:

What? SWBAT identify 10 more and 10 less than a given number. SWBAT will understand and

use the words more and less to describe given numbers.

How? By looking at 120s chart, ss will find a number (center number) and understanding

moving up is 10 less and down is 10 more. Ss will be able to use the words more and less in

a sentence to describe numbers

Materials:

Individual 120s chart for each S

9.1 enVision worksheet

Introduction:

Review work from day before

Warm-Up with more vs less: would you want more takkis or less takkis?

Review that more and greater than are similar and less and less than are similar

I do:

Find number 34

Have the t on the board

Fill in 34 of bigger number

Use 120s chart and the paper cover with flaps to shower which number

Talk through less is smaller, greater is biggerfilling in

We do:

Have whole class find 62

Circulate to see if Ss found 62

Then, have Ss point to 1 less than 62. Write the number on the board and have Ss write the

number on their white board sleeve in same square

Have Ss find 1 more. Write the number

Repeat with 10 more and 10 less. Gradually release Ss to do it independently. If Ss struggle,

choose a few more numbers to work through

Discussion:

Have Ss talk through at their table what patterns they see.

Do your tens or ones change when you go up and down?

Do tens or ones change when you move left to right?

What other patterns do you see?

What words can you use to describe the relationships between the numbers?

You do:

Have Ss do enVision 9.1 Reteach and Review

Pull the Ss who need extra support (with finding numbers OR using the terminology)

Closure:

Exit ticket with t and the number 53 in middle with 52 and 54 filled out for 1 less and 1 more
