Summary

Communication, is as essential to the emergence of organizations as it is for the

development of individuals, relationship, and groups. Without message processing
even the simplest coordination between individuals would be impossible.
Communication is critical to defining goals, delineating individual roles and
responsibiities, controlling the organizations operations, establishing networks, and
creating the organizations culture and climate
A goal is the objective a system is designed to achieve. It is the benchmark againt
which the effectiveness, success, viability, and adaptibility of the system can be
assessed. A division of labor and a delineation of roles are needed to achieve thse
goals. A role is a set of defined behaviorsa job to be done, a position to be filled, or
a function to be carried out.
Organizational system need a control mechanism for planning, decision making,
financial oversight, monitoring operations, coordinating activities, and evaluating
organizational functioning. These are management functions, the way in which they
are carried out in an organization depends on the prevailing viewof the nature of
human behavior in organizations.
Communication networks serve important functions within organizations. Formal
message flow through networks in an organization may be downward, upward, or
horizontal. Informal networks are also basic to organizations. External networks link
an organizations to its environment. Face to face networks in organizations are
increasingly supplemented by descriptions of the types of networks and the
directions of message flow.
Organizational cultures emerge over time as a result of interactions among
organizations members. An organizations culture is the sum of its symbols, events,
standarized verbal and nonverbal behavior patterns, folktales, rules, and rituals that
give the organization a character or personality.
Communicains also results in the creation of organizational cilamtes. A climate is the
atmosphere or tone experienced by members of an organizations as they go about
