April 6, 2017

Day 1 of Conference

We, Arrianne Jaye Mata and Jeanell Martin, the presenters representing the Chemical

Engineering Department and Joshua Reyes, the presenter representing the Civil Engineering

Department, together with the Adamson University President, Fr. Marcelo V. Manimtim, C.M.,

Center for Research and Development Executive Director, Dr. Nuna E. Almanzor and Chemical

Engineering Department Chairperson, Engr. Erison C. Roque arrived at the Universiti Malaysia

Sabah a few minutes before 9:00AM. The opening ceremony was held at the Hotel Lab, starting

with the welcoming remarks by Dr. Awangku Hassanal Bahar Pengiran Bagul, the Conference

Chair, followed by the officiating speech by Prof. Dr. Shahril Yusof, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor

for Research and Innovation of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah. Then by 9:30AM, a keynote speech

was delivered by Associate Professor Dr. Nobuyuki Tsuji regarding Campus Sustainability.

By 10:45AM, the delegates were asked to prepare for the paper and poster presentations.

Four sessions of paper presentation and four sessions of poster presentation were held concurrently

in their designated rooms. We were assigned in the Session 3: Sustainability Science/ Innovation

and Technology, in the MBA Seminar Room, Level 1, under the supervision of Engr. Erison C.

Roque of Adamson University. The arrangement of the presentation is the following: first is the

presentation of Mr. Orlando Bernaldez, entitled Mobile Based Pet Care Management System

Using Arduino, second is the presentation of Ms. Izan Jaafar, entitled Waste Audit in UMT

Campus: Generation and Management of Waste in Cafeteria and Food Kiosk, third is the

presentation of Mr. Kunnapong Khewwatchan, entitled Built-in Solar Powered Photosynthesis

Accelarator: A Feasibility Study to Accelerate Photosynthetic Alteration in Oscillating Light

Environments, fourth is the presentation of Mr. Joshua Reyes, entitled Bagasse as Partial
Replacement to Wood Fibers in a Wood Plastic Composite and last but not the least, is our

presentation, entitled In-vitro Biocompatibility Testing of Phycobiliproteins from Gracilaria

Changii. The presentations finished exactly at 12:30PM.

Weve eaten lunch by the allotted time back to the Hotel Lab and around 2:00PM, Rev. Fr.

Marcelo V. Manimtim, C.M. of Adamson University delivered the second keynote speech

regarding campus sustainability and how Adamson University implements and encourages the

students to take part of it.

Next, around 2:45PM, three working groups were facilitated simultaneously by Mr. Andy

Lee Chen Hiung of Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Engr. Erison C. Roque of Adamson University and

Dr. Akiko Kato of National Institute of Technology, Fukushima College. Working group 1 focused

on Environmental Management System, working group 2 focused on Self-Management in

Sustainability and working group 3 focused on Outreach and Human Resources. We attended and

participated in the second working group under Engr. Roque focusing on Self-Management in

Sustainability. The working group finished by exactly 5:00PM. The delegates were then asked to

ride the service buses for the touring around the campus, and by 6:00PM, we arrived back to the

Hotel Lab, dinner was served, weve some conversations with the other delegates, especially the

students, and the first part of the event was successfully completed.
April 7, 2017

Day 2 of Conference

For the second part of the event, at exactly 8:30AM, the third keynote speech was delivered

by Mr. Takayuki Nakamura, the President of National Institute of Technology, Fukushima

College. He discussed the background of their university, the technology in Japan and how they

are conducting sustainability in their campus. After that is the signing of LOI between Universiti

Malaysia Sabah and National Institute of Technology of Fukushima College. Then, by 9:15AM, a

forum was conducted regarding the three working groups held the day before. Dr. Shamzani

Affendy Mohd. Din acted as the moderator, with Mr. Andy Hiung, Engr. Erison Roque, Dr. Akiko

Kato and Dr. Erika Watanabe making their own speech and conveying their summarization and

conclusions of the said working groups. By 10:45AM, Dr. Fiffy Hanisdan Saikim of the Institute

of Tropical Biology and Conservation of the Universiti Malaysia Sabah, presented and

demonstrated her research, entitled Leading Sustainability in Collaboration with Community:

The Story of Organic Mulberry Tea and a press conference for the launching of Sabah Organic

Mulberry Teas was held.

Lastly, at around 11:00AM, the closing ceremony was conducted, with the awarding of

certificates for the Best Papers and Posters. In our session, two research group have gotten the

award: Mr. Joshua Reyes of the Civil Engineering Department of the Adamson University and Mr.

Kunnapong Khewwatchan of Phitsanulok Pittayakom School in Thailand. The closing speech was

delivered by Mr. Terence S.K. Chee, the Chief Executive Officer of the International Institute of

Human Capital and Entrepreneur Sabah in Malaysia.

Departure from NAIA and Arrival at the Laguindingan Airport, Cagayan de Oro

We arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at around 5:30 am to catch our flight

bound to Cagayan de Oro at 9:00AM. After our 2 hour- flight, we rented a van that will direct us

to Casa Luciana, a guest house near Centrio Mall and a 10-15 minutes walk to Limketkai Luxe

Hotel. We rested at the guest house and accomplish all the requirements required for the Research

Presentation that will be held the following day. Jeanell Martin and Ervin Mission practiced their

delivery of the presentation. We prepared the powerpoint, poster and other necessary things for

the competiton. We also practiced the presenters for the possible questions that the panels may

ask. Around 12:00AM, we call it a day with the confidence that we can make it through the

competiton, with or without an award.

February 22, 2017

Day 1 of Convention

We, the research group, our adviser Engr. Rugi Rubi and our co-adviser Engr. Ersion

Roque, together with the quiz bowl team and their coach, Engr. Rainier Gomez, and the rest of the

ChE professors of Adamson University arrived at the Limketkai Luxe Hotel, thirty minutes before

8:00AM. Upon arrival, we registered our names, prepare our tarpaulin for the research poster

exhibit and readied ourselves for the National Undergraduate Research Contest that will be held

after the ChE Quiz Bowl. Lots of participants and delegates positioned their selves at the hotels

hall. Until 12:00AM, we have answered queries from guests, delegates and other students. We

presented our research poster containing all the necessary details about our research, entitled, In-

vitro Biocompatibility Testing of Phycobiliproteins from Gracilaria Changii to the panels. After
that, judging of the three researches that will make it to the powerpoint presentation were

conducted. By lunch, the results were announced, and Engr. Erison Roque and Dr. Nuna Almanzor

gladly announced to us that we made it to the Top 3. Next, after having eaten our lunch, the

powepoint presentation started. The first presenter is the research group from University of the

Philippines- Diliman, second is from the University of San Carlos and third is our group. After all

the judging and question and answer, we gratefully received our award as the 2nd Runner Up of

the research contest, placing third among all of the undergraduate participants.

February 23, 2017

Day 2 of Convention

We woke up late the next day. Our professors told us that we can rest for the whole day,

since we are tired from the competition the day before. Together with the Quiz Bowl team, we just

stayed the rest of the day in our room, eating food and watching movies, while our professors went

to the PIChE Convention.

February 24, 2017

Day 3 of Convention

We explored the places around our guest house, like the malls, churches and restaurants. Engr.

Erison Roque, our ChE Chairperson, with our other professors, took and treat us students to a

restaurant after they went to the last day of the convention.


February 25, 2017

Campus Visit

The students from Xavier University offered to tour us around their campus and drive us

around Cagayan. We visited the museum, library and the engineering building inside their campus.

They also took us to the famous souvenir shops in Cagayan de Oro.

February 26, 2017

Going Home

For the last day of our stay in Cagayan de Oro, Engr. Elisa Arriola took us to Cagayan de

Oro church in the morning. After that, we ate our breakfast. We went back to the guest house,

packed our things and rest in our respective rooms while waiting for lunch. Then around 2:00PM,

our service van that will take us to Laguindingan Airport arrived. Upon reaching the airport, we

just waited for our flight at 4:30PM. We arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at

around 7:00PM.
