Dear Diaman Amsler:

My name is Mariah Crooks, and I am an ASU (Arizona State University) Online graduate. I just
completed my bachelors degree in Educational Studies with an accompanying minor in English.
This is due to the fact that I am striving to become an ESL (English as a Second Language)
teacher. I saw College of the Deserts job posting for an English as a Second Language non-
credit Instructor (ESLN), part-time on Indeed.com and became immediately interested. I would
like to meet with you at a future time to further discuss this job posting. College of the Deserts
goals to push their students in a way that will prepare them for their transition from community
college to university or, rather, from community college to the real world align with my values of
hard work, perseverance, and responsibility. I can assist College of the Desert in reaching these
goals with my extensive knowledge not only on teaching English as a second language, but on
how to create and foster an academic atmosphere that reflects each students unique strengths
and abilities.

I read in your job posting that the position requires an individual who is able to be flexible with
their time and location. Because I am an individual who believes devoting the majority of their
time to shaping and sharpening their career for the best outcomes is imperative to career success,
I will be a very accountable and reliable employee when it comes to which campus you would
like me to work at and when to work at it. I am an individual who is very generous with her time
and resources, and I will do everything in my power to ensure that there are no complications to
be had concerning where and when I work. An example of this reliability occurred when I made
the decision to work a 16-hour day at my job as a barista at Starbucks. Although I was fatigued,
both physically and mentally, from my first 8-hour shift, I made it a point to be present and work
as hard as I could at my second 8-hour shift that same day. Due to the fact that your position is
part-time, there is even less of an excuse to perform mediocrely.

Concerning my qualifications to teach English as a second language, I have much experience

aside from my major and minor that will allow me to lead an academically effective classroom.
Although I have never taught at the college level, I have four years of experience teaching and
facilitating a learning environment with both elementary school students as well as middle
school students. In addition, I have spent three consecutive summers living and teaching abroad
for approximately one month each. I taught in Ghana, Kenya, and Madagascar. These three
separate experiences afforded me the incredible opportunities to immerse myself in an unknown
and foreign culture in which I had to adapt to and survive in. These experiences I carry with me
throughout my instructional methods and curriculum development. My relatability to my
students as they handle and adjust to a new environment and atmosphere will allow them to
positively engage in course content and comfortably discuss and build community with their
peers around them. College of the Deserts goal to foster this type of community on a campus
setting will be achieved with me as your new staff member.

College of the Deserts goals to see their students academically succeed as well as foster a
community of support and career development go hand in hand with my ability to be an
accountable educational facilitator as well as an inclusive and appreciative academic mentor. I
will be contacting you via cell phone by the end of this week to further discuss this career
opportunity. Thank you for taking the time to review my letter. I look forward to speaking with
you soon.

Sincerely,

Mariah Crooks
