SPECIFICATION FOR L.T. SHACKLE INSULATOR

1.0 SCOPE

This specification covers the design, manufacture and testing of L.T. Shackle Insulators
for L.T. overhead distribution systems.

2.0 SYSTEM PARAMETERS

a) Nominal System Voltage - 400/230V - 3phase & neutral

b) System Maximum Voltage - 440/250V - 3phase & neutral

c) Frequency - 50 Hz

d) Type of Earthing - Solidly earthed Neutral at sub-


stations

c) Symmetrical Fault Level - 25kA

3.0 SERVICE CONDITIONS

a) Annual average ambient


temperature - 300C

b) Maximum ambient air


temperature - 400C

c) Maximum relative humidity - 90%

d) Environmental condition - Humid tropical climate with


heavily polluted atmosphere

e) Operational altitude - From M.S.L. to 1900 m above


MSL.

4.0 APPLICABLE STANDARDS

The L.T. Insulators shall be in accordance with the latest editions of the standards
specified below and amendments thereof.

a) SLS 346: 1975 - Porcelain Insulators for


Overhead Power Lines (below
1000 V)

b) IEC 383 - Insulators

5.0 BASIC FEATURES

The L.T. Insulators shall be made of porcelain in one piece and shall be sound, free from
defects, thoroughly vitrified and smoothly glazed.

5.1 Dimensions

The dimensions and shapes of the insulators covered by this specification are given in
the attached drawing No. DS&S/2000/043 (Appendix A) and shall be in accordance with
the Standards specified.

5.2 Insulator Characteristics

The Insulators shall have the Electrical and Mechanical Characteristics conforming to the
standards specified.

5.3 Material

The Insulators shall be made of good commercial grade wet-process porcelain.

5.4 Construction

The surface of the Insulators shall be effectively glazed except for the points on which the
porcelain is supported during firing which may be left unglazed as indicated in the
Drawing.

5.5 Technical Requirements


The LT Insulator shall conform to the following Technical Requirements:-
Type 2
i) Height of the insulator - 76mm

ii) Diameter of the Insulator - 90mm

iii) Insulator Bolt hole diameter - 19mm

iv) Radius of the Conductor Groove - 9.5mm

v) Total creepage distance to be - 75 mm

vi) Protected Creepage distance to - 26 mm

vii) Insulation Level

a) Power frequency withstand voltage


Dry - 23kV 23kV
Wet - 10kV 10kV

b) Power frequency Puncture


withstand voltage - 31kV 31kV

viii) Failing load - 11kN 16kN

6.0 ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

6.1 Marking

The manufacturers identification, the Year of manufacture and the applicable standard
shall be indelibly marked on the Shackle Insulators.

6.2 Packing

The Shackle Insulators shall be packed in suitable card board boxes and each box shall
contain 50 Nos. Name of the item, quantity and the gross weight shall be clearly marked
on the box.

7.0 INFORMATION TO BE SUPPLIED WITH THE OFFER

The following shall be supplied with the offer.

(a) English version of Catalogues describing the Item and indicating the type, model
number etc.

(b) The Standard to which the Shackle Insulators have been manufactured and the
English version of the Standard.

(c) Constructional feature, materials used and relevant technical literature (in
English)

(d) Performance certificate from five electricity supply authorities.

(e) Completed Schedule of Particulars (Appendix - B).

(f) Type Test Certificates for the following;

i) Verification of dimensions

ii) Temperature cycle test

iii) Dry one minute power frequency withstand test and dry flashover test

iv) Wet one minute power frequency withstand test and wet flashover test

v) Power frequency puncture withstand test

vi) Mechanical failing load test

vii) Porosity test

The Test Certificates of the Type Test performed shall conforming to the standard
specified.

The test certificates shall clearly identify the equipment concerned, showing the
manufacturer's identity, ref. no. and basic parameters.

The Type Test Certificates shall be from a recognised independent testing authority
acceptable to the Purchaser.

Failure to furnish the above particulars and sample Shackle Insulators as stipulated in
Clause 8.0 will result in the offer being rejected.

8.0 SAMPLE STUDY

Three samples of Shackle Insulator offered shall be furnished with the offer to facilitate
evaluation of the offer.

9.0 TECHNICAL LITERATURE AND DRAWINGS

The Technical Literature with complete dimensioned Drawing of the LT Shackle Insulator
and the Routine Test Certificate for visual examination for defects shall be furnished with
the item.

10.0 INSPECTION AND TESTING

10.1 Inspection

Selected Bidder shall make necessary arrangements for Inspection by an Engineer


appointed by the Purchaser, and to carry out Acceptance/Sample Test on the Item
offered.

10.2 Acceptance/Sample Test

The following Acceptance /Sample tests shall be witnessed by the Engineer and an
additional copy of the Test Certificate shall be supplied with the item.

i) Temperature cycle test

ii) Dry one minute power frequency withstand test and dry flashover test

iii) Wet one minute power frequency withstand test and wet flashover test.

iv) Power frequency puncture withstand test

v) Mechanical failing load test

vi) Porosity test

vii) Measuring total creepage distance

viii) Measuring protected creepage distance

ix) Verification of Dimensions

Specification for LT Shackle Insulators

Clause 6.2 Packing

The above clause shall be amended as follows:

A maximum of 50 Shackle Insulators shall be suitably packed in card board boxes with
separators to prevent damage during handling and transport. Four numbers of such card
board boxes shall be packed in study wooden crates with wooden block base suitable for fork
lift handling. Name of the manufacture/item, quantity and the gross weight shall be clearly
marked on the box.
