Members of St. Damien ARCM will meet on Mon-
day, November 6th in Father Abbate Hall. The Ro-
sary will be recited at 6:30pm with the meeting to
follow. We will hold our annual Memorial Service
for those members who have died in the past year.
Members are reminded to bring nonperishable items
for the Food Bank to receive a second door prize
ticket. November Social will be Sandy Craig, Col-
leen Bullock, Anna Markovich & Anna Catherine
Liparulo. We will have a speaker for the evening. A
good attendance is requested. All ladies of the Parish

discipleship and we also commemorate all the unnamed saints on whom this world depends for its very life.
All are reminded that All Saints Day is one of the six Holy Days of Obligation in the United States.

Commemoration of the Faithful DepartedAll Souls DayNovember 2nd

On Thursday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. our parish family will remember those of St. Damien Par-
ish who have been buried during the last year: November 2, 2016-November 2, 2017. All parishion-
ers are invited to remember and pay honor to our beloved dead. Let us also pray for the living family
members and friends who are grieving the loss of their loved one. On this day we will let our hearts
and minds be gathered to the Lord whose cross and resurrection have transformed death to life for
our sake. This whole month we remember all who have walked before us and who have put their
faith in the Lord so as to embrace Gods promise of eternal life.

The Greatest Commandment In todays Gospel Jesus makes his command

of love succinct: Love God with all your heart, mind and soul and love your
neighbor as yourself. While succinct, this command is not always simple. Sure,
it may not be hard for many to not kill and to keep holy the sabbath, but how
about getting frustrated with God or others, or fulfilling our needs before what
God or others expect of us. It can be hard to set aside our desires or whats con-
venient for us, yet we must be willing to do what honors God and builds up our sisters and brothers,
no matter the personal cost involved. As On Mission for The Church Alive! unfolds our normal time
or place of worshipping God may change and be less convenient, and that will be hard for us. That
doesnt mean, however, that we give up on God or neglect our family of faith. On Mission seeks to
make our worship of God more vibrant and our opportunities to build up the Body of Christ more ef-
fective. Prepare now for the changes ahead so that you can be ready to participate in the life of the

Veterans and First Responders Tribute Concert KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS ~

October 29, 2017 at 2pm in
Ringgold Middle School Auditorium
Ringgold Middle School will host a band concert
featuring the Greater Monongahela Area Communi-
ty Band on Sunday, October 29 in the Ringgold
Middle School Auditorium. (Finleyville) The annu-
al concert is a tribute to Veterans and First Re-
sponders (Fire Fighters, Police, Paramedics, Doc-
tors, and Nurses)
The concert is free and open to the public.
FALL PROJECT is collecting used
and new shoes for adults and children.

shoes. NOW until November 30th, you
can put the shoes in the bin in the
vestibule of the Church.

AMEN TO ACTION
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2017
On Friday, November 24the day after Thanksgiv-
ingBishop Zubik, leaders of Christian denomina-
tions, and people of faith from throughout the Pitts-
burgh area will come together in the spirit of Jesus to
worship and pack one million Meals of Hope for the
hungry. Amen to Action will be held at the David L.
Lawrence Convention Center in Downtown Pittsburgh
from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and will include an all-
faith worship service comprised of readings, prayers,
testimonies of thanks, and music followed by the
packaging of one million meals for the Greater Pitts- Sue Novosel from Liturgical Publications, our bulletin printer,
burgh Community Food Bank. People of all faiths will be in our office securing new ads for our bulletin. We need

Pastoral Impressions

Our readings these past weeks have
reminded us of the immense and
marvelous love that God has for
each of us. We have been reminded
that we must open ourselves to God so that we
can draw closer to receive Gods love and in turn,
give our love to God. In todays readings we learn
how important it is for us to return and share this
love. The reading from Exodus begins with Gods
commands to be careful in how we treat the
needy. God speaks of strangers, widows and or-
phans, and the poor. If these are mistreated and
cry out, God will hear their cries because God
says, I am compassionate. The idea ,of course,
is that we too should be compassionate.
Our short gospel reading clearly spells this out.
The Pharisees are out to trick Jesus once again, so
they ask him which commandment in the law is
the greatest. Without hesitation Jesus responds,
You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your
heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the greatest and the first commandment.
The second is like it: You shall love your neigh-
bor as yourself. Jesus was asked for the greatest
commandment, and he gives it, but he doesnt
stop there. He goes on and gives the second com-
mandment, and in doing that he is teaching us
something very importantthat the greatest com-
mandment is not the ONLY commandment.
Of course the Pharisees and we Christians living
today know that God comes first. We wouldnt
even be here if it hadnt been for God who created
each of us uniquely and loves each one of us as
we are. Of course we are to love God first and
foremost. But thats not the whole story. Jesus
went on to name the second commandment as
similar to the firstand it too is about loving. We
are to lover our neighbor as ourselves. This fol-
lowed by something the Pharisees maybe hadnt
thought of, that the whole law and the prophets
are contained in these two commandments. When
we look at the other commandments we realize
that if we keep the commandment of loving our
neighbor, we will be keeping these other com-
mandments as well. Jesus was right!
