product enables you to do the following from your PC:

- Limiting the settings that can be changed by the user from the control panel
For each managed device, you can limit the settings that can be changed by the user

from the control panel. This will be useful to protect certain settings from being
changed by the user.

For each managed device, you can set the paper types loaded on the device.

- Controlling the operation modes

For each managed device, you can control the device's transition to the energy-
saving
mode and to the normal operation mode.

- Checking the device information

and
other settings and the available features.

- Changing the network settings

it may
require some optional products.
- Monitoring and managing the FAX usage
For each managed device, you can monitor and manage the FAX usage. You can have a
list
of the fax transmission results and edit the address book.
Note) This will be available only with FAX-enabled devices. Also, for editing the
address
book, you will need a text editor supporting CSV format.

- Managing the address book

For each managed device, you can manage the address book. You can edit (add,
modify, and
remove) the address book entries.
Note) This will be available only when it is supported by the target device. Also,
for
editing the address book, you will need a text editor supporting CSV format.

condition
occurs on it. The condition for receiving notification can be configured on a per-
group basis.

- Setting SNMP community names

Protocol)
community names that can be used for information obtainment in the following
software products:
SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin, SmartDeviceMonitor for Client,
DeskTopBinder V2, etc.

- When installing SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin, you will need to log in to the PC
as
Administrator.

- When any previous version of this software product is installed on the PC, you
can
update it with the new one by performing an overwrite installation.

- Before starting the overwrite installation, terminate the previous version of

this
software product if it is running.

- In the overwrite installation, use the same user account that was used in the
initial
installation of the previous version of this software product. Otherwise, the
overwrite
installation will be incomplete. Or you can also perform a normal installation (not
an
overwrite installation) after uninstalling the previous version of this software
product from the PC.

- For the installation destination, do not specify a Windows directory or a folder

in which
SmartDeviceMonitor for Client or DeskTopBinder V2 exists.

- The installation completion screen may appear behind another screen. If it does,
select
SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin from the task bar.

- When installing this software product via a network drive, make sure that both
the client
and server support long file names. If either or both do not support long file
names, specify
the directory name in the installation source in DOS-8.3 format. Otherwise, the
installation
may fail.

[ 3 ] Uninstallation
- When uninstalling SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin, you will need to log in to the PC
as

- Also, you will need to log in to the PC by using the same user account that was
used in
the installation process. Otherwise, the uninstallation will be incomplete.

- Before starting the uninstallation, make sure that the software product is not
running.
If it is running, first terminate it and then start the uninstallation.

[ 4 ] Restrictions
- In Version 8.0.0.0, IPX/SPX protocol that is supported in Version 7.4.2.0 or
before is not
supported.

- When the network is heavily loaded, device search/information obtainment may

fail.
The devices may not respond at all or some information may be missing. For
instance,
this can occur when the devices on the network are being accessed simultaneously
by multiple PCs.

- Device search/information obtainment may take long time depending on the search
conditions
specified via the Search/Monitoring Settings screen. If this happens, you can
cancel the search
from the menu bar ("Searched Device List" menu) or by the close button.

- If you have specified subnets via the Search/Monitoring Settings screen,

device search/information obtainment may fail depending on the broadcast settings
of the router
devices or the subnet address settings of the target devices. If this happens,
contact the
network administrator.

- In the Network board list of NIB Setup Tool, MAC addresses may be displayed as
"Not Available". If this happens, select the device whose MAC address you want to
check
in the list and then press the Next button. By doing so, the information screen on
which
you can check the MAC address of the device will appear.
- This software product regularly communicates with the devices it manages.
Therefore,
if dial-up connection is used, it can result in high operational costs. In order to
avoid this,
take appropriate measures such as using appropriate addresses. For the same reason,
you might
want to check the network connection settings when you relocate the PC on which
this software product
is installed and running. Take appropriate measures if necessary.

- You will need to re-install SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin when the drive on which
it has
been installed is reformatted from FAT to NTFS.

- If IEEE 1394 expansion board is used, the node address of the network I/F in
device
information will indicate "00-00-00-00-00-00".

- If IEEE 1394 expansion board is used, NIB Setup Tool will be unavailable.

- Device search/information obtainment may fail if an anti-virus software product

is running
on the same PC on which SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin is running. For details, see
the
documentation for that anti-virus software product.

- When a wrong password is used in information obtainment via SNMPv3, no

information can
be obtained. The status will show "No Response".

- Device search/information obtainment may fail if Windows Firewall is enabled on

the PC.
For details, visit the Microsoft web site.

- SmartDeviceMonitor for Admin does not support proxy servers.

- Some features will be unavailable if SSL communication is unavailable where it is

necessary.
Specifically, Address Management Tool, User Management Tool, NIB Setup Tool, and
information reset in the device information screen will be unavailable when the
following
conditions are met:
-- The target device is using a server certificate for SSL communication; and
-- The issuer of the certificate is inaccessible for some reason; and
-- Only SSL communication is permitted by the device's settings.
If this happens, do either of the following:
-- Make the issuer accessible; or
-- Disable the "Check for publisher's certificate revocation" option of IE.

- A communication error may occur if an appropriate driver for the Ethernet board
used is not
installed on the PC. If this happens, install an appropriate driver.

- A communication error may occur if the IP address of the target device is either
"xxx.xxx.xxx.0" or "xxx.xxx.xxx.255".

- Any device connected to "1394 Interface Unit" is not supported.
