SERVICE LETTER

There has been a specific instance reported to us where, over a period of extended running in a desert
environment, small particles of dust precipitating from the turbine cooling air had built up on the inside
of the Compressor Intermediate Shaft (3 Fig.1). Whilst this situation is in itself harmless, it could cause
compressor rotor imbalance if the dust deposit is disturbed during major inspection.
We have introduced a modification (see Fig. 1) which basically comprises fitting a tube between the
Compressor Intermediate Shaft and the Compressor Turbine Stub Shaft to contain any dust particles
within an area where deposits cannot cause an imbalance problem.
This modification is now a standard feature of our current turbines. Gas Generator Rotors (as part of a
Gas Generator or as a separate item) sent to RGT Lincoln for overhaul will have the modification
included in the rebuild.
It is not a modification that would normally be carried out by users except where the necessary
specialised equipment and skills are available.
