AMIE ENGERBRETSON
I was 10 months old at the rope tow at Squaw
Valley. My dad said I wasnt even talking yet but at
the end of every run I would just point and reach
toward the rope tow to take another lap. Beyond
that, my love of skiing started out on the driveway. I
had plastic skis that would strap onto my little
Sorels and I would just lap the driveway saying
Again! Again! signaling my dad to come push me
back up to the top. When I was finally big enough
for real ski boots I was so excited I slept with my ski
boots in my bed for like a month.

ARIELLE GOLD
I was 4 years old. I still skied at that point I didnt
start snowboarding until I was 7 and I was chasing
Taylor down the bumps on the side of a cat track
called Why Not in Steamboat. We liked to call
the bumps whoop-dee-doos. I would risk life and
limb to keep up with Taylor, and in this particular
2
incident, I managed to hit one of the bumps so hard
that my ski binding broke. My dad had to carry me
3 down the mountain on his shoulders.

TAYLOR GOLD
When I was 11, my dad pulled me out of school at
lunch so we could go ride Steamboat. We went to
the Mavericks halfpipe for the afternoon. I had been
working on my frontside 720 for a while, but never
really put one down. After a few close ones a local
pro snowboarder, Joe Eddy, gave me a high five and
told me I had it. I stomped my first real 7 after that

remember being so stoked because I felt like I could
actually be a pro one day.

JEREMY JENSEN 4 5
My father started me skiing at 2, and those earliest
trips to the resorts were adventure, excitement and
fun balanced with misery and fright. I recall crying
from icy-cold hands, a fear of heights on lifts and
frustration with old hand-me-down goggles, skis
and boots. But I also remember the great feelings
that came once I learned to slide on my own. Eleven

years after starting me on skis my father showed me

how to link turns on a snowboard, and thats when
my love for riding really took off. These memories
of time spent with my father are some of the best in
my life and laid a foundation for who I am today. Im
forever grateful to my parents for their sacrifice. We 6
didnt have much money so we made do with thrift-
store equipment and night visits to the ski resorts
because it was more affordable and my parents
worked all day. They taught me I had to work hard
to play hard and to make the most of what I have.

MCKENNA PETERSON
I will never forget the first time I dropped into
Sun Valleys famous bowls. Even at the age of 5, I
recognized that this is where the cool skiers skied.
I pestered my dad about taking me into Easter
Bowl. I was at an age where I wasnt allowed to ski

anywhere on the mountain without my dad by my
side. He finally said, Alright, but Im not going to
carry you. I was determined. We dropped in and
my wimpy little legs carried me all of the way to the
chairlift. One of my proudest moments on skis.

TYLER PETERSON
One of my favorite childhood ski memories was
our annual Thanksgiving trip to Grand Targhee.
I remember getting my skis tangled up trying to
load one of the lifts. The liftie had to stop the lift to
straighten me out (my first lift stoppage!). All in all
those are some of my best memories as a kid and
probably a reason why I still love skiing so much.

KAYLIN RICHARDSON
My family drove to the Colorado Rockies from 8
Minneapolis at least once a year. What I remember
was fighting for the back seat of the Suburban (ah,
the luxury of personal space), listening to books on
tape (The Lord of the Rings was a family favorite.),

striving to keep up with my Dad when he effortless-

ly pulled away on the flats (I relished skiing at his
heels.), and marveling at how my Mom miraculously
had everything any one of us needed nestled into
the bosom of her one-piece ski suit.

Powsurfing can certainly be a less expen-
sive way to ride mountains because like
surfing, you often travel under your own
power to access the zones with the best
waves. The simplicity of it varies great-
ly on where you are riding them. Very
simple to ride local backyard hills, local
parks after a storm and the roadsides
of mountain passes, but it can get more
complicated when you want to venture
deep into the backcountry where some
of the best slopes and conditions are at.

How much do you love telling people that
you skied well in Vancouver while repre-
senting Jamaica?
I think right after the Olympics, I was not
that excited to tell people. I thought I
could have done a lot better. Now, as the
years have gone by, my favorite thing to
do is to tell people that I am the highest
finisher from the Caribbean in the Winter
Olympics. Not only just for Jamaica,
but for all the little islands. I am looking
forward to the day that somebody picks
up where I left off and runs with it. The
Winter Olympics are coming up in a cou-
ple of months, so I dont know how long I
will keep that title.
Youre now a North Face Mountain Guide

at your home resort, Squaw Valley. What
inspired you to pursue this position?
I grew up training and racing with the
Squaw Valley Ski Team. I had the oppor-
tunity to spend all of my off-time from
training exploring the mountain. So, once
this North Face Mountain Guide Program
got put together, it seemed like a perfect
fit. I get to take people who were not
familiar with the mountain, and go show
them all my favorite nooks and crannies.
You were named Pond Skimming World

Cup Champion last year. Whats your cos-
tume advice to would-be pond skimmers?
Showing up to a Pond Skim without a cos-
tume is like showing up to a wedding in a
wife beater and jeans. You have to wear a
costume to a Pond Skim. Get creative. It
doesnt matter what you wear. Just make
sure its something funny. I personally
dont get too elaborate with costumes. I
havent brought out the cardboard, rubber
cement and duct tape yet. ERIC SMITH

Kevin Giffin, who has worked as ski
patrol at Fernie Alpine Resort in British
Columbia for the past 10 years, says filming
for Warren Miller alongside world-class
athletes was an opportunity of a lifetime
for a guy like me.
What got you interested in ski patrolling

and what drives you each day as ski pa-
trol director at Fernie?
Like a lot of people, I started in the indus-
try as a liftie. I loved being a liftie, but I
thought ski patrolling looked like a pretty
fun job, so after a few years I got the cer-
tifications. In my opinion, its the best job
at the resort. You put your ski boots on
in the morning when you get to work and
youre in them all day. Like any other job
at the resort, youve got to go do your
work, but half of ski patrolling is skiing.
Thats whats so awesome about it.
Whats the craziest thing youve ever

seen as a ski patroller?
There are endless stories, from antics that
happen at work to the funniest way peo-
ple have gotten hurt. Most of the crazy,
crazy things that have happened at the
resort are long gone. Between liability
and social media, a lot of those things
have gone away.
So, its not like Hot Dog...The Movie

anymore?
Well, we actually have a Hot Dog day at
Fernie and some of the most awesome
stuff that happens on the mountain hap-
pens on that day. Hundreds and hundreds
and hundreds of snowboarders and skiers
come dressed up in old-school gear. Its
incredible.
Which would be worse falling while

working ski patrol or while being filmed
for Warren Miller?
Definitely falling while working on ski
patrol. At least if I fall during a Warren
Miller shoot, maybe theyll cut it out! If
I fall in uniform, especially if its under

Tell me how it was filming in New Zealand

for you this year.
Its in the Southern Hemisphere, so all
your friends are in board shorts and bikinis
and floating down the river trying to stay
cool, and youre experiencing this winter
wonderland. You havent snowboarded for
three months, and then youre right on top
of this huge line with big consequences
with really big snow. Overall, it was just a
really beautiful experience.
Youve been busy running Avalon7. Are

there any similarities between being an
artist/entrepreneur and being a boarder?
Snowboarding gives you an opportunity
to constantly be creating. You have to
make a thousand creative choices a day
when youre on your snowboard where
youre going to turn, how youre going to
turn, what area youre going to do. That
creative impulse and that desire to put
your mark on the world feeds into being
an artist and an entrepreneur.
Youve made a lot of bold moves in your

life. Where do you get your confidence?
Both my parents set me up for being able
to go out into the world and try whatever
I wanted to. There was a safety net there.
When you think that anything is possible,
you have the audacity to believe you
might become a pro snowboarder or that
you could start your own company. My
dad is a professional watercolor artist, so
that kind of set the tone for the possibili-
ty that I could make a living reflecting the
beauty that I see in the world on a piece
of paper or on a T-shirt. Snowboarding
has taught me that breaking free and
choosing your own path is a really cool

There are 1,000 things I love about Jackson. The fact that its got
4,100 vertical feet of epic pow to ride almost everyday. The peo-
ple, the culture that surrounds it. Its really this deep ski-mountain
culture that is just kind of my people; conditions were ideal (read:
powder for miles) for the crew at Jackson Hole during filming;
freeskiing champ and Jackson native Jess McMillan (above on
the aerial tram and right) skied the deepest snow of her life while
filming with Warren Miller Entertainment this year. To her, Jackson
exudes a Wild West attitude. I think its an attitude of anythings
possible and that spirit of the people and the mountains and the
animals all living together.

Tommy Moe
Tommy Moe stunned in 1994 when he won
the gold medal in the downhill in Lilleham-
mer, Norway, by 0.04 seconds. That made
him the first U.S. male ski racer to win two
medals in the Winter Olympics (the second
being a silver in the Super G).
You have two kids that ski right alongside

you, and I hear you come from a family of
skiers yourself.
Yeah, we grew up skiing at the Big Moun-
tain Resort now its called Whitefish
Mountain Resort but we skied every
weekend in the winter time. My dad was

Hole Mountain Resort, and you co-own
Tordrillo Mountain Lodge in Alaska. What
is it like owning your own heli-skiing ad-
venture operation?
Oh, its great. Mike Overcast and I started it
in 2004. We initially started skiing out there
I think it was in 1997, so we were some of
the first skiers in the mountain range.
Over the years weve learned a lot and
figured out new ski terrain, and then also
managing guests and keeping them safe
because Alaska ... its a dangerous place.
The biggest thing I tell people is to take an
avalanche course and go with people who
have knowledge of some of the terrain. The
mountains win every time. They dont care
if youre in the wrong place at the wrong

for Pacific Northwest native Tyler Cec-
canti, whose engagement to girlfriend
Elise helped take away the sting of a
season-ending ACL injury.
What was the highlight of last season?

Highlight last winter is 100 percent pro-
posing to my girlfriend Elise. I did it at my
home mountain on Dec. 31. I told her the
mountain wanted us to do a photoshoot for
some ads. We took the gondola up early
before the public, and it just so happened
it was a bluebird morning. My good buddy
and photographer Ian Coble was along for
the photo shoot to document. Popped
the question with Rainier in the back-
ground. She was completely surprised and
then we drank champagne and skied the
rest of the day. Was a perfect day.
What do you love most about your home

resort, Crystal Mountain (Washington), and
is it always good to come back and make
some turns there after traveling the world?
I love it because I know every rock, tree,
jump there on that mountain. Its also spe-
cial because my family and extended family
all have cabins right at the base. So we all
get to ski together and catch up. I feel like
Crystal is really underrated when it comes
to the terrain. We have so much to cover in
all skill levels, and I love exploring home.
Youve accomplished a lot in your career;

what are you most proud of and whats
your next goal?
I am most proud of my continued pres-
ence in the Warren Miller movies. After
the first I worked hard to prove myself
and keep pushing to be in the next film
and offer something different for the
audience. Now I am in my seventh film and

Where, when and how did your skiing

addiction begin, and how do you cope
when you cant ski?
My skiing addiction began at the young
age of 2 years old. Oh, wait, I may be
confusing those early childhood feelings
with Sour Patch Kids bribes on the chair
lift. I always say if it wasnt for candy and
hot chocolate when I was first learning
to shred, then I would probably be living
a very different lifestyle. Thank you,

searching for adventure. Surfing, biking,

runs deep in my veins. It requires a huge
amount of dedication and discipline but
the euphoric feeling of flying an airplane
all on your own is soooo worth it. When
Im driving to the airport Im blasting
music and getting super fired up, just like
I do when I drive to the hill on a pow day.

George Rodney
Freeskier George Rodney won the Freeride
World Tour on his first try, quickly making a
name for himself at age 21.
You started off in ski racing. How did you

make that move to big mountain?
I started ski racing in Aspen, and when I
started to get more competitive, joined
Team Summit for my first two years of high
school. Then my sophomore year, I joined
the Winter Sports School in Park City. I
kind of found myself hanging out with all
the freestyle skiers and snowboarders
thats who I gravitated toward and thats
who all my friends were. I found out that
there was actually a structured youth pro-
gram and circuit for big-mountain skiing.
It was the perfect fit. And then I found
out about my first big-mountain compe-
tition in Red Mountain, B.C. Really had no
idea what I was doing, just signed up for it.
I pretty much treated it like a ski race, you
know, doing drills before my run and just
acting like a ski racer. I ended up winning
that competition, and that was the begin-
ning of it all.
Fast forward to 2015: Youre the champ

in the Freeride World Tour in your rookie
season. How did that feel?
It was a dream come true. It was kind of
surreal, and it definitely changed my life.
But after I accomplished that goal, I had
to take a step back and be like, well now
what? My other goal had been to film for a
major production company, so when I got
the call to come and do a Warren Miller
shoot, that was another goal checked off.
What was the film experience like?

It was a different deal than a competition.
We had a vague idea of where we were try-
ing to go, and then wed get dropped off
there. Then wed realize the snow wasnt
what we wanted, and get a quick bump
to the peak right next to it, but we hadnt
really looked at that. Then youre dropping
blind. I had the time of my life. We had a
small and committed crew that knew what
they were doing, and our weather and the
snow pack were unbeatable. It made for a

Speedriding a combination of paragliding and skiing lets Shaffer go where no skier typically can. Shaffer spends part of the year in Chamonix, France,
largely considered the home of speedriding. Thorien was in awe of Shaffers control: Hes speed-flying and doing things that are making me, you know,
turn into my Mom. Yet, everything was perfectly controlled; he wasnt doing anything that was out of his control, out of his element, she says. To us it
was a little intense to watch, but it was beautiful because he has this personality, he is the Bird and to watch him fly, its just the whole 360, everything
comes together, and his personality, and his activities and his passions and love, it all accumulates into this moment, and its amazing.

actually shaped my life around it. I live
on the road in a trailer, so Im surrounded

How do skiing and riding motorcycles
compare?
For me riding a motorcycle is about as
close to skiing as Ive ever come. You get
that same excitement as you would skiing
the adrenaline and enjoyment are just
constant. Imagine your favorite ski run
and your favorite motorcycle road. You
get the twists and turns and the curves
and youre going fast or slow or whatever
but youre having a great time and then
repeat and repeat and repeat and repeat.
It just keeps going, it never stops.

What do you look forward to most when
fall turns into winter?
One thing thats really special about win-
ter and skiing is that regardless of your
age, whether youre 6 years old or 70
years old, those same feelings and that
same excitement is locked into your soul.
It never goes away. Youre waiting for the
next ski movie to come out, youre wait-
ing for the magazines to come out, youre
trying to find all of your gear. A time
when most people are shutting down,
when nature is shutting down, were just
