Overview of Reflection E-Portfolio

There are many types of e-portfolios, but all share some common characteristics. They are
designed to favorably impress an intended audience of the value of the material archived within
the e-portfolio. This assignment is an educational e-portfolio. While there are a variety of
purposes for educational e-portfolios, the one you will create serves the purpose of chronicling
your academic work and framing it with reflections that tell the story of your learning to your
peers, your professor, and potential audiences such as those responsible for choosing interns,
scholarship recipients, graduate students, and employees. Furthermore, the e-portfolio you
create in this class can be used for the learning you experience in all of your courses, which
effectively will yield an academic profile of you and your academic career.

Throughout this course, you will reflect on your experiences as a student in the Media
Aesthetics class, and engage with scholarly discussions about media studies. This assignment
will give you an opportunity to revisit your work and articulate how you develop as a student
throughout the semester. By critically considering the development of your writing/speaking
process, and critical thinking process, your e-portfolio will provide you and me with a detailed
account of skills and attitudes with which you will leave this class, while providing you with the
opportunity to compose in an online medium.

Assignment Guidelines for E-Portfolio / Blog

Each of the following components should be its own section or page within your website. Each
reflection should be the equivalent of 1-2 double-spaced pages (250-500 words).

As part of this assignment you will need to build a website or blog, and this should include, at a
minimum a:

Home Page: Include a home page in which you clearly introduce yourself, specify your
purpose, and reflect on your development as a student in this course. Consider the following
questions as you develop your response:
What is your background and what are your plans? What does media mean to you, and
what kinds of media related jobs/interests do you see yourself doing in the future?
I have a background in communication studies, with a concentration in media
What did you learn about media studies, and about yourself as a media user that you can
transfer to future situations? Be specific and consider potential academic, professional,
and personal connections.
What particular areas of the media studies would you like to continue working on as you
move forward? What skills do you think you need to practice further?
How have you refined and built on your critical thinking process throughout the course of
the semester?
While this will be the first thing your audience sees, you should be working on it throughout the
semester and complete it at the end of the course, as it will provide an overview of your
experiences this semester.
I have a background in communication studies, with a concentration in media. Media fills
my life. I am fascinated by movies and social media. I am an intern for the federal Bureau
of investigation and I work in the communication and media studies unit. I would like to
continue in this unit in a future career. We teach police officers and FBI agents how to
properly interact with media. We also teach how to properly craft a press release or
official social media post. I would also love to work for a major company like The Walt
Disney Company, and assist them with social media. The world is becoming more and
more media consumed and it is crucial that we learn how to create media, before we enter
the job market.

I have taken many media classes while studying at Christopher Newport University. Most
of these media classes have tended to focus on the negative effects of media. I realized it
is easy to focus on the negative because there is so much negative media. Media tends to
be directed at a younger age. I have decided that I want to work on creating a more
positive outlet in media for young girls. There is so much negative media out there for the
to take in. Constantly commercials tell girls they arent pretty enough, or smart enough,
or strong enough. I want to create a media outlet for girls to post positive things they have
done. Such as service, workouts, and blogs with advice from older girls to younger.

Although, I have learned a lot from my media classes there are still things I would like to
learn more about such as, graphic design and video production. I also think it would be
very beneficial for me to work on my writing skills. I have not taken a university level
English class and I think it would be beneficial to learn how to write specifically for
things like blogs or press releases. If my university offered more specific class choices
that taught these topics I would definitely take them. I would like to learn these skills for
a possible future career.

Studying media is important, for all students in the coming age. When you study media
you learn to properly filter out the good or bad. You can tell what is click bait and what is
real news and you can make sure you are getting valid information. This class has been
very beneficial. I have learned to examine the world through a more critical eye. I have
also learned to appreciate media and the positive effects it can have on society.

Assignment Reflections: Write a brief reflection for each major assignment. Consider the
following questions:

Do you feel you accomplished the purpose of this assignment? What did you learn, and
how can you use it in the future? In what specific situations might these lessons and skills
be applicable? Did you practice any particular skills you would like to continue
developing as you move forward?
How well do you feel you met the criteria for this assignment?
How did your critical thinking process for this assignment facilitate or obstruct your
progress?
Was your revision process effective? How, if at all, could you have altered it to make
your work more effective?
What from the readings/lectures was most or least helpful in completing this assignment?

Visual Design. In addition to the above components, your website should be visually engaging
and aesthetically pleasing through the use of images, videos, and other design features.

Helpful Resources for E-Portfolio Assignment

Website Builders

Many platforms exist to support the creation of e-portfolios, and many of these are free of
charge. Most have templates from which you can choose, and most provide tutorials to help you
get started. While you are free to choose a platform of your liking, I recommend using one of
the following platforms (links to tutorials are provided in parentheses):

Weebly (https://vimeo.com/100966309)
Wix (https://www.wix.com/support/html5/)
Google Sites (http://tinyurl.com/k7tn2z7)
Wordpress (http://en.support.wordpress.com/)
Blogger (https://support.google.com/blogger/answer/1623800?hl=en&ref_topic=3339243)

When should you get started on the e-portfolio?

Now. Youll want to peruse different e-portfolio platforms to determine the affordances
each offers. You might also want to query friends and fellow students for
recommendations. Decide whether you will make the e-portfolio public or private. That
is, if you choose to make it public, anyone with access to the internet will be able to view
your e-portfolio. If you choose to make it private, the general public will not have access.
However, you will need to supply the URL of your e-portfolio to me, as I will need to
have access to it for grading purposes (providing feedback).

May I include other content in the e-portfolio?

Yes. However, you will need to carefully consider how additional content aligns,
contributes, and amplifies the story you want the e-portfolio to tell your audiences and
potential audiences.
