Trillian
Trillian is the leading female character in
Douglas Adams great book The Hitchhikers
Guide to the Galaxy. Shes a mathematician
and astrophysicist, and if she took up knitting,
no doubt she would enjoy the unusual
construction of this shawlette: You start
knitting at one corner, adding wider and wider
rows, thereby forming a long, shallow, slightly
asymmetrical triangle. Just perfect for
wrapping around your neck several times or
hug your shoulders with a little warmth. Due to
the shallow-but-long shape, you will get
something useful to wear, no matter how much
yarn you have. The garter-stitch center is
perfect for showcasing a beautiful hand-dyed
yarn, because it makes the colors flow into
each other naturally. The fishnet-lace border
Measurements on both short sides of the triangle adds just a

Instructions

Setup Rows
Cast on 10 stitches.
Row 1: kfb, (k2tog, yo) three times, k2tog, k1.
Row 2: p8, k1, kfb (this is the back side).
Row 3: kfb, k1, (k2tog, yo) three times, k2tog, k1.
Row 4: p8, k2, kfb.

Body Pattern
Row 1: kfb, then knit until 9 stitches remain on the left
needle, (k2tog, yo) three times, k2tog, k1.
Row 2: p8, knit to last stitch, kfb.

Repeat two rows of body pattern until your shawlette has a

size that you like, or until you have about 7% of your skein
left. Make sure you have an odd number of stitches on the
needles before you start the edging (my version had 191
stitches).

Edging

stitches together.
Bind off fairly loosely (I suggest using a needle 2-3 sizes

bigger) on the next row in knit stitch.

Finishing
Weave in ends invisibly, wash and block (ideally stretching
the edge, but not so much the garter stitch body).

Enjoy!
