RESEARCH AND TEACHING OVERVIEW

My research focuses on well-being and health behaviors in the context of awaiting uncertain future
outcomes, such as medical test results, exam scores, and job interviews. In particular, my research
examines how people successfully navigate uncertain stressors with particular focus on the effects of
seeking, receiving, and providing social supportthe perception or experience that one is loved and
cared for by others, esteemed and valued, and part of a social network of mutual assistance and
obligation. To examine this phenomena, I utilize longitudinal studies of people awaiting personally
significant news, retrospective accounts of these experiences, and in-lab experiments creating
situations of uncertainty.

As a professor, I strive to present content in ways that highlight the relevance of psychological
research, provide students with frequent opportunities to apply and reinforce what they have
learned, and create a positive and engaging learning environment for all students. I have been the
primary instructor for six courses including Research Methods (with lab), Statistics for Behavioral Sciences,
and Introductory Psychology, as well as 22 discussion sections as a teaching assistant. In addition, I
mentor and supervise undergraduate students on independent research projects.
