Afghan President Hamid Karzai
is taking a page from the

public office: talk to the
taxpayers.
Karzai is on a campaign to give
the boot to tens of thousands of
foreign private security guards
working in Afghanistan. He’s
already put the U.S. government
on notice that the private
security firms operating in his
country will be disbanded
within four months.
On Sunday, the Afghan leader
took his case directly to the
American people.

corpses were strung from a
bridge in a popular getaway
outside the Mexican capital on
Sunday, the latest atrocity as the
country battles an escalating
drug war.
The bodies of the four young
men were discovered early on
Sunday, hung upside down by
their feet from a bridge near a
wealthy area of Cuernavaca, a
leafy city about an hour outside
Mexico City, where many of the

Supporters and opponents of a
proposed Muslim cultural center
and mosque near the World
Trade Center site staged
competing rallies in downtown
Manhattan on Sunday, kept
apart by police and barricades.
The emotionally charged
debate, which has gained
national political significance,
centers on plans to build the
center two blocks from the site
of the September 11, 2001
attacks by al Qaeda, which
killed nearly 3,000 people.
Republicans against the project
are using it to attack Democratic
President Barack Obama ahead
of midterm elections, where his
party is fighting to retain control
of Congress.
Opponents of the center, which
would include a prayer room,
say its proposed location is
insensitive and fear it will
harbor religious extremism.
Those who back it cite the right
to religious freedom and a need
to promote tolerance and
understanding.
Hundreds of opponents on
Sunday chanted "No Mosque,"
sang patriotic songs and waved
photographs of violent attacks
by Islamic extremists.
One sign read: "Not all
Muslims are terrorists, but all
the terrorists were Muslim."
Around the corner, supporters
chanted: "We don't care what
bigots say, religious freedom is
here to stay."
A supporter, retired school
teacher Ilene Kahn, said: "This
has become a political tool to
preach hatred. The peace-loving
Muslims did not attack us."
While tempers were heated and
shouting matches erupted, no
violence or arrests were
reported. Uniformed police and
rows of barricades kept many in
the crowds apart. Police officials
said extra forces were deployed
but would not say how many
were added.
Obama and New York City
Mayor Michael Bloomberg have
said they support the right of
Muslims to build the center near
Ground Zero, while
Republicans, including former
vice presidential candidate
Sarah Palin, oppose it.
Others suggest it be moved to a
less controversial spot.
Ali Akram, a local doctor who
supports the project, said: "The
people who say the mosque is
too close to Ground Zero, those
are the same people that protest
mosques in Brooklyn and Staten
Island and Tennessee and
Wisconsin and California. What
radius will they go for? There's
no end to it."
Many in the crowd opposing
the center were firefighters and
construction workers, who
carried signs reading: "This is
Sacred Ground to New
Yorkers."
One sign read: "Everything I

Plans for the project include a
13-story building to house an
auditorium, swimming pool,
meeting rooms as well as the
prayer space. The structure is
architecturally plain and does
not include a minaret, dome or

Some opponents have taken
legal action, seeking to void a
ruling that would allow
construction to proceed, while
some construction workers have
launched a Hard Hat Pledge,

but as Islamic recruiting stations

seen that in parts of Europe and
in the U.S.
I also am a firm beliver in the
U.S. Constitution and Bill of
Rights. However, I do not think
our founding fathers took into
consideration the baggage that
comes with Islam, namely
Sharia law and the Quran
mandate that demands followers

The future cloud should fend for itself

It is fascinating the ways in
which the world of computing
can be made easier, thus
creating opportunity for new
complexities--usually in the
form of new computing
technologies. It's happened with
programming languages,
software architectures, computer
networks, data center design,
and systems virtualization.
However, nothing has raised the
bar on that concept like IT
automation.
You may have been expecting
to hear the term "cloud
computing," but cloud is just an
outcome of good automation.
It's an operations model--a
business model to some--that
was only made possible by a
standardization of the core
elements of computing and the
automation of their operation.
Without automation, the cloud
cannot be self-service, and it
cannot scale to very large
numbers of customers or
systems.
The best part is that we are only
at an intermediate stage in the
evolution of operations
automation--the second of
several evolutionary stages in
the growing capability of
systems to fend for themselves
in a global computing
marketplace.
These are the stages we
understand to some extent
today:
• Server provisioning
automation--The first stage of
automation that we all know and
love is the automation of server
provisioning and deployment,
typically through scripting, boot
-time provisioning (e.g. PXE
booting), and the like. When the
server is the unit of deployment,
server automation makes a lot of
sense. Each server (bare metal
box or virtual machine) can host
one operating system, so laying
down that OS and picking the
applications to include in the
image is the way to simplify the
operation of a single server. The
catch is that this method alone is
difficult to do well at large
scales, as it still requires the
system administrator to make
decisions on behalf of the
application. How many servers
should I deploy now? Which
types of servers should I add
instances to in order to meet
new loads, and when should I do
that? The result is still a very
manual operations environment,
and most organizations at this
stage attempt capacity planning
and build for expected peak. If
they are wrong...oh, well.
• Application deployment
automation--A significant
upgrade to single server
deployment is the deployment
of a "partitioned" distributed
application, where the different
executables and data sets of the
application are "predestined" for
a deployment location, and the
automation simply makes sure
each piece gets where it needs to
go, and is configured correctly.
This is what Forte Software's
4GL tools did when deploying a
distributed application, which
transferred responsibility for
application deployment from
systems administrators to
developers. However, this
method requires manual
capacity management,
deploying for peak loads, and
continued monitoring by human
operators.
• Programmed application
operations automation--
Developing operations code
adds critical functions to basic
distributed deployment
automation to automatically
adjust capacity consumption
based on application needs in
real time. This is the magic
"elasticity" automation that so
many are excited about in the
current cloud computing
landscape. Basic scaling
automation makes sure you pay
only for what you use. However,
today's scaling automation has
one severe limitation: the way
the "health" of the application is
determined has to be engineered
into application operations
systems ahead of time. What
conditions you monitor, what
state requires an adjustment to
scale, and what components of
the application you scale in
response has to be determined
by the developer well before the
application is deployed.
• Self-configuring application
operations automation--To me,
the logical next step is to start
leveraging the smarts of
behavior learning algorithms to
enable cloud systems to receive
a wide variety of monitoring
data, pick through that data to
determine "normal" and
"abnormal" behaviors and to
determine appropriate ways to
react to any abnormalities.
These types of learned behavior
turn the application system into
more of an adaptive system,
which gets better and better at
making the right choices the
longer the application is in
production. Though behavioral
learning systems today, such as
Netuitive's performance
management products, are
focused primarily on monitoring
and raising alerts for abnormal
behaviors, they can do some
amazing things. According to
CEO Nicola Sanna, Netuitive
has three key calculations it
applies to incoming data:
• It determines where one
should be with respect to
operations history.
• It performs end-to-end
contextual analysis of existing
conditions, determining what
factors may be contributing to
an operational abnormality.
• It forecasts likely conditions
in the near future based on
previous behavior trends, thus
potentially averting
abnormalities before they
happen.

making their way into this
space, such as Integrion's Alive
product, and I expect we'll see
performance analytics become
more intelligent in a variety of
other traditional management
and monitoring tools as well.
The real excitement, however,
will come as automation
systems learn not only when to
raise an alert but also what
action to take when an alert is
raised. This latter problem is a
difficult one, make no mistake
(a wrong choice might teach the
system something, but it might
also be detrimental to
operations), but successful
implementations will be
incredibly valuable as they will
constantly evolve tactics for
dealing with application
performance, security (at least
some aspects, anyway) and cost
management.
Crazy, you say? Why the heck
would I want to give up control
over the stability and operations
of my key applications to a
"mindless" automation system?
For the same reason that--once
you trust them--you will happily
turn over your operating
systems to virtual machines;
your phone systems to managed
service providers or your elastic
workloads to cloud
environments: optimization,
agility, and cost.

Skype is one of the most
important work and social tools
I use. It’s nearly perfect. Except
that you people are using it to
drive me crazy.
It’s made my list of“can’t live
without” products for the last
five years, and more recently the
screen sharing feature has made
Skype even more important as a
productivity tool.
What I like about Skype is that
you can use it for chat, or audio,
or video. It’s an extremely
versatile tool and most people in
the startup world use it as their
primary instant messenger
application. It’s nowhere near as
popular as Windows Live
Messenger with 303 million
worldwide monthly users, or
Yahoo with 79 million. But it’s
in a solid fourth place with 18
million users per month,
according to Comscore (just the
IM feature). The real number is
probably far higher than that.
A lot of people know I like to
use Skype for communicating,
and I get a lot of inbound
messages. And I’m starting to
go a little crazy from the way
people are using it. So it’s time
for a friendly primer on
appropriate Skype etiquette.
Most of these helpful hints will
also be useful for people using
different IM applications.
It’s not a conversation until
both sides are engaged. Just
because I haven’t blocked you
on Skype doesn’t mean that you
have an open door into my
brain. The best way to start a
Skype conversation is to
message something like “are
you free?” If I respond then
we’re all set. If not, don’t take it
personally. And don’t start
firing off whatever you want to
say anyway. Too many of my
Skype interactions look like
this:
You: Hey Mike
You: Mike!
You: Are you
You: there?
You: Ok well I really want to
talk to you about
You: [long message follows]
You: Hey! r u there?
You: hellooooooooo
You: yo!
You: Whatever. Thanks for
ignoring me. Jerk.
Me (an hour later): Um, ok.
Instand messaging is both
synchronous and asynchronous.
Sometimes a conversation is
both. I don’t take offense if
someone bails out of a
conversation on IM without
warning only to reengage an
hour or a day later. Neither
should you.
Just start a conversation
politely, and wait for the other
person to say something before
jumping in. If they don’t
respond, say something like
“Looks like you’re not online,
I’ll send an email.” And then
send an email.
Don’t abuse the Enter button. I
know – your message is
extremely time sensitive. So
instead of typing full sentences
you just
hit return in the middle of a sent
ence. Or a word.
That way the reader can know
what you’re saying in the
beginning of a sentence before
you’re even done typing the
end!
The default Skype settings are
lots of notification messages all
the time. Every time you hit
enter it beeps my computer.
That’s really annoying. Get
whole sentences, paragraphs
even, down in the box before
you hit enter. People will
appreciate it.
This is the number one thing
that drives me crazy on Skype,
as shown in the video above.

Don’t just jump right into a
phone call. It’s polite to send a
chat message first saying
“online? time for a quick Skype
call?” It’s annoying when the
Skype phone starts ringing
randomly. Sometimes in a rush
to hit don’t accept I accidentally
accept and then there’s some
person talking full volume at
me, most likely with their video
going and demanding that I turn
on video too. And all I wanted
was a little bit of quiet.
Video calls are not a God given
right. Just because you want to
do video right now doesn’t
mean I want to. I may be in my
underwear, for example, which
is when I do my best blogging.
Feel free to hit video if you
want. And if I want to I’ll hit
video. If I don’t, why bring it
up?
If you do turn on video, note
that you have just become part

One of the greatest things about
TechCrunch is that they
celebrate and reward each
writer’s own voice rather than

TUAW Review: ColcaSac sleeve for iPad

I've never understood people
who keep their iPads bound up
in cases. I get that they want to
protect their iPads, but I never
understood why they choose
cases which just add to the bulk
of the beautifully thin device.
I've always been a sleeve guy
myself -- something to keep the
iPad scratch-free while
transporting, yet which easily
allows you to slide it out and
hold it in your hands the way
Jobs intended. That being said,
I've searched for months for a
good iPad sleeve. Most of the
sleeves out there are very sterile
and bland in appearance. Their
designs are fit for mass
production, but not much else.
My search for the perfect iPad
sleeve ended when I discovered
the ColcaSac iPad sleeve.
ColcaSac is a small company in
Salt Lake City, Utah that makes
five different iPad sleeves, plus
numerous iPhone and MacBook
sleeves. Their designs are
simple, yet different. The
ColcaSac I have is the
Hanakapiai model. It's got a soft
cotton interior that gives the
iPad's screen a nice wipe every
time it's taken out of the sleeve,
helping wipe away fingerprint
smears. The outside of the
sleeve is made of a beautiful
basketweave hemp canvas that
gives it a slightly rugged look.
But one of the things I like most
about the ColcaSac is the
sleeve's outside pocket (which
so many sleeves lack), perfect
for carrying a USB cable and
charger. And best of all, the
iPad fits snugly into the sleeve.
I've tried many iPad sleeves, and
most of them don't hold the iPad
tight. With the ColcaSac sleeve
I can open the sleeve (it uses a
Velcro fold to close), hold it
upside down, and have the iPad
slide out slowly.
Considering the design and
quality materials they use, the
$35 price tag for the ColcaSac is
a steal. It's also a beautiful
choice for iPad owners who
want something aesthetically
different than the usual offerings
of iPad sleeves found on
Amazon or in Apple Stores.

sleeve, I highly recommend this

There seem to be two poles of
opinion in the SEO world
around content. At one pole, you
optimize everything you do
within an inch of its life: writing
headlines and structuring copy
to engage search engine
algorithms rather than human
imaginations. You frame your
content and choose your topics
with a view to linkbait instead
of what really charges your
passions, and you track metrics
and prune away less productive
activity ruthlessly.
On the other pole, you may be
no less attuned to metrics than
your counterparts at the other
end of the spectrum, but you
direct your focus to creating
great, engaging content and
building a community around it.
Here, you're counting less on
talking directly to search
engines and more on creating
the kind of traffic and organic
linking activity that will drive
up your rankings.

however, was unmoved. And his
slippery treatment of women’s
suffrage—like his slippery
approach on matters of
race—did not end once he was
in the White House. Running for
reelection four years later, he
was still playing the same
exasperating game. That year,
the Democrats did not endorse a
constitutional amendment
providing for women’s suffrage
but, instead, called on the states
to extend voting rights to
women. Such a half-measure
looks cowardly in retrospect, of
course; but it also looked
cowardly at the time. In
November 1916, The New
Republic excoriated Wilson for
his weak stand on the issue.
During his reelection campaign,
TNR wrote, Wilson had told a
group of suffragists that “[h]e
was with them,” even as “he
confessed to a ‘little impatience’
as to their anxiety about
method.” From this, the
magazine concluded that the
president had “at best a vague,
benign feeling about [the issue],
and no conviction whatever that
woman suffrage was creating a
national situation which called
for thorough sincerity, nerve and
will.”
An evasive stance on a
controversial civil rights issue
from a liberal president; an
insistence that the issue is
primarily local, rather than
national, in character; a
complete failure of sincerity,
nerve, and will: If these things
sound familiar in 2010, it is
because Barack Obama is taking
exactly the same approach on
gay marriage.
My colleague James Downie
has assembled a fascinating
timeline of Obama’s statements
on gay marriage over the past 14
years, stretching from 1996 to
earlier this month, when the
White House responded to a
judge’s ruling on Prop 8 by
reiterating that it opposes same-
sex marriage. What the timeline
shows is a pattern that can only
be described as illogical and
cynical. Obama argues that he is
against gay marriage while also
opposing efforts like Prop 8 that
would ban it. He justifies this by
saying that state constitutions
should not be used to reduce
rights. (His exact words: “I am
not in favor of gay marriage, but
when you’re playing around
with constitutions, just to
prohibit somebody who cares
about another person, it just
seems to me that that is not what
America is about.”) Obama
appears to be saying that it is
fine to prohibit gay people from
getting married, as long as the
vehicle for doing so is not a
constitution. Presumably, then,
he supports the numerous states
that have banned same-sex
marriage through other means,
without resorting to a
constitutional amendment? If so,
he might be the only person in
the country to occupy this
narrow, and frankly absurd,
slice of intellectual terrain.
Obama has also said he favors
civil unions rather than gay
marriage because the question
of where and how to apply the
label “marriage” is a religious
one. This argument makes even
less sense than his stance on
state constitutions, since
marriage, for better or for worse,
is very much a government
matter.
Obama and those around him
seem unaware that all of this is a
problem; a look at some of the
lessons from Wilson’s
experience might help to clarify
why they ought to reconsider.
The first lesson is that history
does not look kindly on this type
of presidential conduct. Wilson
is today remembered as a near-
great president, but his
indifference on questions of
gender and race is more than a
bit unflattering in retrospect.
Second, like Wilson, Obama is
running out of time to stay
ahead of history. In 1912,
women’s suffrage was hardly an
outlandish cause; one of the
three major presidential
contenders that year, Teddy
Roosevelt, came out in favor of
it, even as Wilson remained
mum. Similarly, on gay
marriage, Obama is now to the
right of Laura Bush, Arnold
Schwarzenegger, and, according
to a new CNN poll, 52 percent
of the American people.
Third, there is the problem of
the example Obama is setting
for the rest of the world.
According to Cooper, when
Wilson eventually did endorse
the women’s suffrage
amendment, on January 9, 1918,
it was at least partly because of
foreign policy. “As one of the
Democrats [who had spoken to
Wilson that day] recalled two
weeks later, the president told
them that passing the
amendment would send the right
message to the world and would
acknowledge women’s service
to the nation,” Cooper explains.
Months later, addressing the
Senate on the issue, Wilson
cited the “unusual circumstances
of a world war in which we
stand and are judged in the view
of our own people and our own
consciences but also in the view
of all the nations and peoples.”
The point, it seemed, was that
you could not wage war in the
name of democratic ideals while
barring half your population
from voting. Obviously, the
lesson here does not map
perfectly onto contemporary
politics—Obama would not
exactly increase his popularity
in the Muslim world by
endorsing gay marriage—but
neither does it make sense to
think of gay marriage as
completely disconnected from

international affairs. Obama has
said that he wants to restore
American moral leadership in
the world. But how can he claim
the mantle of moral leadership
when we are being outpaced by
so many countries and so many
foreign leaders on one of the
central civil rights issues of our
time?
The final lesson from Wilson is
that what a president says and
does matters. The day after
Wilson’s January 9 statement,
the House endorsed women’s
suffrage by two votes. Wilson,
albeit years late to the cause,
would go on to lobby senators
and, eventually, the governor of
Tennessee, which became the
final state to ratify the
nineteenth amendment. Obama,
meanwhile, seems to have
convinced himself that he can’t
make a difference on gay
marriage, so why wade into the
issue? But, while he may not
realize it, Obama is already
leading on gay marriage; he is
just leading in the wrong
direction. Every time Obama or
a surrogate reiterates his
position, it reinforces the idea
that gay marriage is a bit too
scary for the political
mainstream. Worse, Obama’s
stance seems to be a way of
conveying to the country that he
knows a lot of people still aren’t
completely comfortable
admitting gays and lesbians as

Washington—In an election, a
solid "no" usually beats an
uneasy "yes, but." That's the
heart of the problem Democrats
and President Obama face this
fall.
The advantage of saying "no"
without equivocation is that a
significant share of the
electorate is usually ready to
shout the word from the
rooftops, especially when the
economy is as bad as it is now.
Both parties have regularly
offered variations on the late
George C. Wallace's brilliant
slogan, "Send them a message."
The catchphrase leaves voters
free to define who "them" is,
and to fill in the message
themselves.
Democrats know this since the
power of negative thinking won
them back both houses of
Congress in 2006. Their
supporters swarmed the polling
places to say no to George W.
Bush and the war in Iraq. That's
why identifying the GOP as "the
party of no" won't do the
Democrats as much good as
they'd like to think. With more
than a third of conservative
Republicans declaring that our
Christian president is a Muslim,
just saying no to him is a more
than adequate motivation to
spend a few minutes with a
ballot.
And "no" is certainly more
powerful than the mixed
messages Democrats are putting
forward. In their sweeping
victories of 2006 and 2008,
Democrats picked up dozens of
seats in very conservative
districts. Many of these
incumbents don't want to be
associated in the least with the
remarkable record their party
has built in this Congress for
fear of tying themselves to
Obama or the party's
congressional leadership, or
both. But this means that
Democrats are defending their
achievements half-heartedly,
while Republicans are assailing
them without mercy and, often
enough, without much concern
for accuracy.
To solve this problem, the
Democrats have come up with a
loud "no" of their own, asking
voters to reject the Republican
past one more time to avoid
moving the country backward.
The president makes this case
by providing some reflections
on driving. "When you want to
move forward in your car, what
do you do? You put your car in
'D,'" he says. "When you want
to go backwards, you put it in
'R'—back into the ditch!"
It's a nice line, but will it get
enough of his party's supporters
to drive themselves to the polls?
What's missing from the
Democrats' campaign is a
willingness to raise the stakes of
the election. This may be the
only way to inspire the party's
own supporters and move those
independents still open to
persuasion.
The principled case that must
be made is that the brand of
conservatism seeking power this
year is irresponsible, incoherent
and untrue to the best of its own
traditions. That's clear enough at
the most basic level of policy:
Conservatives can say that they
are deeply worried about
deficits, or they can insist that
tax cuts matter most. But when
they say they can reduce taxes
and trim deficits at the same
time, they are either deluded or
deceptive, and they are playing
voters for fools.
But there is something far more
troubling at work: the rise of an
angry, irrational extremism—the
sort that says Obama is a
Muslim socialist who wasn't
born in the U.S.—that was not
part of Ronald Reagan's buoyant
conservative creed. Do
Republican politicians believe in
the elaborate conspiracy theories
being spun by Glenn Beck and
parts of the Tea Party
movement? If not, why won't
they say so? Liberals who
refused to break with the far left
in the 1950s and '60s were
accused of being blinded by a
view that saw "no enemies on
the left." Are conservatives who
should know better now falling

What the current right has on

On Monday's episode — the
first of a two-part finale — fans
will see another long-simmering
storyline come to life for
Amber: her relationship with her
mother. As depicted by several
phone conversations, things are
"tense and complicated"
between the two — exacerbated
by the fact the family is poor.
Her mother's arrival will only
make things more knotty as she
sneaks in food for Amber during
Parents Weekend.
"It's just a whole whirlwind of
emotions that come out of
Amber when her mom comes,"
Hasselhoff says. "You find out
why she has this warped view of
herself — why she lacks
confidence and feels like she
needs to lose weight even
though she's the 'thinnest'
camper. Those two episodes are
pretty heartfelt. It brings her
back to the past and makes her
realize how much she has
changed since she got to camp
and what she needs to work on
with her relationship with her
mother."

Amber is also working on her

confronted her last week about
hooking up with George. "I
think Amber feels like she can

The twist, of course, is that
Will's crush, Ian ( Ari Stidham),
likes Amber, unbeknownst to
her. Will Amber find out before
the season's up? "Let's just say
it's an amazing cliff-hanger that
involves me and boys,"
Hasselhoff laughs. "It's always
Amber and boys! There's more
boy trouble ahead. It involves a
lot of different love triangles.
The conclusion [to the cliff-
hanger] would pick up the day
after, which is going to be a lot
of fun."
Huge executive producer: "You
don't need to be fat to relate" to
series
Huge has yet to be renewed for
a second season, but Hasselhoff,
who'll turn 18 on Saturday, has
a "good feeling" a pick-up is

get picked up, it would kind of

should embrace who you are,"
she says.

better for him," reliever Sean
Marshall said.
"You hate to see stuff like that.
You hate to see a grown man
kind of tear up like that, it just
shows his heart for winning and
his drive for baseball and his
family."
Piniella finished with an overall
record was 1,835-1,713. He
trailed only Tony La Russa, Cox
and Joe Torre in victories
among active managers.
Piniella's record with the Cubs
was 316-293. Under the
mellowed skipper, Chicago won
consecutive NL Central titles in
2007-08, but missed the playoffs
last year and slipped back even
further this season with a new
owner, Tom Ricketts, in charge.
"I've enjoyed it here," Piniella
said. "In four wonderful years
I've made a lot of friends and
had some success here, this year
has been a little bit of a struggle.
But, look. Family is important,
it comes first."
In 18 years in the majors as a
player -- he had a .291 career
batting average -- and another
23 as a manager, Piniella made
five trips to the World Series
and has three championship
rings. He began his professional
playing career in 1962.
A right-handed outfielder, he
was the AL Rookie of the Year
in 1969 after batting .282 with
11 homers and 68 RBIs with the
Royals. He was traded to the
Yankees in 1973 and ended his
playing career with New York
in 1984.
"It's a very tough day for him,
very emotional," Hendry said of
the man he hired four years ago
to replace Dusty Baker. "There
has been some times the last
couple of months where he
knew his family was possibly
going to need him. He certainly
didn't want to go out before the
end of the year, but it's just at
the point now where he need to
be home with his mother and his
family."
Quade, 53, a Chicago-area
native who played in the Pirates
organization, has coached in the
Cubs' organization for eight
years. He was the manager of
Triple-A affiliate Iowa from
2003-06 before joining the
Cubs. Quade has also served as
a minor league manager in the
Nationals, Phillies, and Athletics
organizations.
Hendry said he decided over
the past few weeks that
Trammell would not be
considered for the job on a full-
time basis. He said he discussed
that with Trammell on Sunday,
and that he understood.
"He's happy for Mike, and he
wants to stay and help Mike,"
Hendry said of Trammell.
"Since I had already made a
decision that Alan wasn't going
to manage next year, I thought
that we would be better served
by him not being the manager
for the rest of the season."
Previously, Hendry had said
Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg,
now managing the club's Triple-

He said last month Piniella's
replacement wouldn't be hired
before the end of the season, but
he had hoped to have a manager

doing here in Des Moines with
these players and what my job is
right now," he said. "If the time
came, if I was considered for
that job in Chicago, I think
that'd be a terrific thing just to
be considered. The whole goal
of any minor leaguer is to get to
the major leagues, and I think
that includes coaches and
managers like myself."
Piniella's South Side
counterpart, Chicago White Sox
manager Ozzie Guillen, said the
news was "very shocking."
"I think this man is a very, very,
very [good] baseball man. When
you're going to talk about
baseball, Lou's name is out
there. But I don't blame him,"
Guillen said. "Sometimes
enough is enough, especially
when you expect a lot from the
ballclub from the beginning of
spring training and all of the
sudden everything is wrong. It's

Report: Washington Redskins' Albert Haynesworth suffers
muscle condition

One day after Albert
Haynesworth accused
Washington Redskins coach
Mike Shanahan of underplaying
the two-time All-Pro's medical
condition in recent days, The
Washington Post reported that
Haynesworth has
rhabdomyolysis.
The condition, which sidelined
Haynesworth in practice last
week, causes the rapid
breakdown of skeletal muscle
due to injury to muscle tissue,
the paper reported Sunday,
citing three sources.
A Redskins official told ESPN
that the team is unaware that
Haynesworth has this condition.
"You see the condition with
people who aren't used to
working out in the heat," Dr.
Tyler Cooper of the Cooper
Aerobics Center in Dallas told
ESPN.com's Matt Mosley. "It
can be very dangerous and it's
usually caused by an isolated
event."
Experts told The Washington
Post that Haynesworth likely
recovered from the condition
since he was able to play in
Saturday's 23-3 loss to the
Baltimore Ravens.
"If [Haynesworth] was properly
hydrated and his blood enzymes
were measured at a mild level,
then it would be feasible to play
in a game," said Cooper, who
has not treated Haynesworth.
Haynesworth stopped
practicing early Tuesday at
training camp and did not
practice Wednesday or
Thursday. Shanahan gave
varying explanations for
Haynesworth's idleness each
day. The coach initially said
Haynesworth "just was sick,"
then said the cause was
dehydration, then finally said it
was "more of a headache than
anything else."
Haynesworth said Saturday
night he had something more,
but he didn't specify what.
"You'll have to ask them, but I
guess they'll tell you 'headaches'
again," said Haynesworth,
emphasizing the word by
holding his fingers in the air to
simulate quotation marks. "It
was part of it, but it wasn't all of
it. They left out a whole lot of
stuff."
"Rhabdomyolysis is basically a
condition in which you have
extensive muscle breakdown,"
Dr. Lynne P. Yao, chairman-
elect of the National Kidney
Foundation, told The
Washington Post. "It doesn't
happen as often in well-
conditioned athletes, but if
there's really extreme
circumstances -- like extremely
hot weather -- than that could
happen. When you have large
amounts of muscle breakdown."
The Redskins said Shanahan
would comment on
Haynesworth on Monday, when
the team resumes practice, but
Shanahan denied knowledge of
Haynesworth's condition to
AOL Fanhouse on Sunday.
Shanahan went on to reiterate a
point he has made before:
Haynesworth has to practice if
he wants to play.
"Albert has gotten away in the
past with playing without
practicing," Shanahan said.
"That will not happen under this
regime. If he's going to play,
he's going to practice, and that is
the same with every player here.
The days of him playing without
practicing are over."
Haynesworth has been a thorn
in Shanahan's side since the
coach took the Redskins job in
January. Haynesworth drew
Shanahan's ire by staying away
from the offseason program and
later lobbied for a trade because
he didn't want to play nose
tackle in the team's new 3-4
defense. Shanahan gave
Haynesworth a chance to leave -
- provided Haynesworth didn't
stay around to accept a $21
million contract bonus on April
1. Haynesworth took the bonus.
Haynesworth also skipped a
mandatory minicamp and was
fined. When he showed up for
training camp, he was made to
pass a conditioning test before
he could practice. After several
failed attempts and several days
of idleness because of a sore
knee, he finally passed the test
on the 10th day of camp.
Then came last week's setback,
when Haynesworth stood to the
side over three days of practices
with neither player nor coach
giving a clear explanation of
what was going on. During three
weeks of camp, Haynesworth
completed only five of 13 full
practices.
Haynesworth also isn't happy
that he's having to practice and
play with the backups. His
appearances in the two
preseason games came after the
starters had left. He said it's
another way his offseason
boycott is being held against
him.
"I'm a ninth-year pro,"
Haynesworth said Saturday. "I
don't think I should have been
out there in the third quarter.
But, for having 'headaches'
again, that was what they
wanted to do."
Shanahan said Haynesworth is
"going to have to earn his way"
to play with the starters.
There's no telling when that
might happen, or whether the

championship. The Cubs' last
World Series appearance came
in 1945, their last World Series
winner in 1908. It didn't happen,
despite the promising first two
seasons.
What Chicago fans saw for the
most part was a more reserved
Piniella, although he did have
one dirt-kicking meltdown with
umpire Mark Wegner early in
his first season and soon
thereafter the Cubs took off and
eventually overtook the
Milwaukee Brewers to win the
NL Central in 2007.
The Cubs won 97 games under
Piniella in 2008, but were swept
out of the playoffs for the
second straight year and it's
been mostly downhill since that
successful run.
"It's a tough job. But, look. I
mean. They're going to win
here. They've got a family
owned business now," Piniella
said.
"The Ricketts family is going to
do what they need to do to get
this thing to where it can win.
They're going to give it the care
that it deserves. When I took
this job I didn't call anybody. I
came here and did the best I
could for as long as I've been
here. That's all you can do," he
added.
Piniella said he would look
back later.
"I'll have plenty of time to
reflect, I will," he said.
"I've enjoyed it. It's a wonderful
place to work and wonderful
people to work with and for. To
end a career in a place like
Wrigley in a city like Chicago
with these wonderful fans, I
couldn't be more appreciative to
the Cub organization."

stories. If that is the case, and I
think it is, there is a strange and
powerful ghost that is haunting
almost all of the mainstream
news coverage of what is
happening.
In order to spot this ghost, let’s
pay close attention to the top of
one of the only mainstream
news reports that is, in fact, not
haunted by this particular ghost.
Readers of The Telegraph were
given a solid hint into the role
that religious faith — a very
specific form of Islamic faith,
not to be confused with many
other forms of Islam — is
playing behind the scenes.
Actually, that is wrong. This
form of faith is not behind the
scenes. It’s right in the open for
all to see, even though it is not
being addressed in many news
reports. Here is the top of this
hard-news report:

requiring all adoption agencies
to provide services to gay
couples. Now we’re seeing
ramifications from that law in
recent stories about a Catholic
adoption agency’s loss in court.
The Telegraph’s Martin
Beckford took a fairly blunt
approach to the court case with
the headline “Last Catholic
adoption agency faces closure
after Charity Commission
ruling.” So a Catholic group
didn’t just lose its day in court;
It probably has to shut down as
a result of the decision.
The ruling means that Catholic
Care is likely to have to close its
adoption service, as if it decided
instead to consider same-sex
couples as parents it would be
going against Catholic teaching
on the importance of children
having a mother and father. This
would mean the agency, which
can trace its origins back to an
orphanage set up in Leeds in
1863, would lose church
funding.
Since Labour’s homosexual
rights law came into effect in
January 2009, all the other 11
Catholic adoption agencies in
England have either had to close
down or sever their ties with the
church hierarchy. Catholic Care
was the last to hold out as it
launched its legal bid.
The charity, which only found

tool. Click on the “Questions”
link that now appears in the left-
hand navigation of Facebook
and you’ll see questions relating
to your interests as well as those
asked by friends and friends of
friends.
To give yourself the best shot at
seeing relevant questions here,
you’ll want to make sure you
list interests in your personal
profile that align with the
business’s industry and core
competencies. There are a few
other ways to find questions too,
including manually entering in a
topic, or choosing from
suggested topics or trending
topics.
Once you find questions that
are of interest, it’s important to
note that you can answer them
as a business. In other words, if
you have created a Facebook
Page for Acme, Inc., you can
respond to Facebook Questions
as Acme, Inc. instead of as John
Doe. This lets the person who
asked the question – and anyone
else who stumbles upon it – visit
your Facebook Page instead of
your personal profile.
As a Page admin, you can also
ask questions that are visible
both on your Page and in your
fans’ News Feeds on Facebook.
This creates a new way to
communicate with your fans
aside from status updates and
news links that you’re probably
already used to sharing. These
questions also get indexed by
Facebook (Questions are visible
to everyone on the site), which
means other users could find
them and in turn find your
business. Unfortunately, these
Questions don’t show up on
your Wall as of yet – one of a
handful of usability issues that
Facebook still needs to address
with the product.
It’s too early to tell how widely
used Facebook Questions will
be. A huge user base doesn’t
guarantee that users will
embrace using the product in
completely new ways; a great
example of that is Google Buzz,
which had tens of millions of
Gmail users at its disposal but
has largely gone quiet in the
months since its launch. Still,
Q&A offers some interesting
possibilities to both engage
current customers and
potentially reach new ones, so
keep an eye on Facebook

HOW TO: Undo “Send” in Gmail
