Composer Game
Grades: 4-7
Round Robin Activity
Famous Composer
of the Day
This is a brief introduction or review for a certain composer
and is not intended to be a complete biography.

1. Have the class sit in a circle.

2. Select one composer for the class to learn about for the day.

3. Randomly pick about 6 student readers to read the composer


of the day story cards. Assign one story card to each reader
and have them read it to the class.

4. Tell the class to listen closely to the student readers in order


to play a fun game after the composer story reading.

5. Collect the cards after the readers are done with the story
cards.

6. Divide the class into 2 teams. Have the class share as many
things as they can remember about the famous composer.
Give one point to the team for sharing a correct fact about
the composer. The team with the most points win the game.

7. Optional: They can also do a word search to review what they


have learned about the Famous Composer of the day.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria January 27,
1 1756. He began playing keyboard with his father Leopold when he was
four years old and composing music at age five. Wolfgangs older sister,
Nannerl was very musical and often played duets with him.

Mozart taught himself to play the violin and organ. At age six, his father
2 took him to Vienna where he played for the Austrian emperor and was
introduced as a child prodigy.

At age eight, Mozart visited London and played for King George III and
3 Queen Charlotte. In London, he meets Johann Christian Bach, J. S. Bachs
youngest son and writes his first three symphonies. At age 14, the Pope
made Mozart a Knight of the Golden Spur.

4 In 1778, he composed some variations for piano on the tune Twinkle,


Twinkle, Little Star.

At age 26, Mozart marries Constanze Weber in 1782. He supports his


5 family in Vienna by composing music, performing in public and private,
and teaching. He composed three of his greatest operas, The Marriage of
Figaro, Don Giovanni, and The Magic Flute.

in 1785 Mozart became friends with Franz Joseph Haydn. He even


6 played in a string quartet with Haydn. Mozart honored Haydn by
composing six string quartets and dedicating them to him.

Mozart had financial difficulties and health problems in his final years.
While working on the Requiem, he became very sick. He was not able to
7 complete the Requiem when he died in Vienna on December 5, 1791. He
was penniless and in debt, so was buried in a common grave. The exact
location of his grave is unknown.
