1. Develop the global stiffness, mass matrix and Eigen vectors for the steel bar shown below,
take A1=600 mm2, A2= 200 mm2, E = 200 GPa, = 7800kg/m3.

2. For a steel bar shown in figure below (i) develop the global stiffness and consistent mass
matrices and (ii) determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes using the characteristic
polynomial technique. Take A1=600 mm2, A2= 200 mm2E = 210GPa, = 7600kg/m3.

3. Determine the natural frequency and displacements of a stepped bar as shown in figure. Also draw the

7. Determine the first two natural frequencies, for the bar shown in figure, with length 2L, modulus of
elasticity E, mass density and cross-sectional area A.

8. a) List the proprieties of Eigen vector.


b) For the stepped bar shown in figure. Determine the global stiffness and mass matrices. Take E =
210 GPa, = 7800kg/m3, A1=200 mm2, A2= 400 mm2, A2= 150 mm2, L1 = 200 mm, L2 = 300
mm, L3 = 150 mm.

10. a) Derive the Stiffness matrix of 1-D Conduction element.


b) Explain the different boundary conditions that can be applied to a one dimensional heat
transfer problem.
11. A composite slab consists of three materials of different thermal conductivities i.e
20 W/m 0K, 30 W/m-0K, 50 W/m-0K of thickness 0.3 m, 0.15 m, 0.15 m respectively. The
outer surface is 20 0C and the inner surface is exposed to the convective heat transfer
coefficient of 25 W/m2-K at 300 0C. Determine the temperature distribution within the wall.
12. A furnace wall is made up of three layers, inside layer with thermal conductivity
8.5 W/m 0K, the middle layer with conductivity 0.25 W/m 0K, the outer layer with
conductivity 0.08 W/m 0K. The thicknesses of the inner, middle and outer layers are 250 mm,
50 mm and 30 mm respectively. The inside temperature of the wall is 600 0C and outside of
the wall is exposed to atmospheric air at 30 0C with heat transfer coefficient of 45 W/m2 0K.
Determine the nodal temperatures.
13. A wall of 0.6 m thickness having thermal conductivity of 1.2 W/m 0K. The wall is to be
insulated with a material of thickness 0.06 m having an average thermal conductivity of
0.3 W/m 0K. the inner surface temperature is 1000 0C and the outside of the insulation is
exposed to atmospheric air at 30 0C with heat transfer coefficient of 30 W/m2 0K. Calculate
the nodal temperatures.

15. a) Derive the Load vector of 1-D Conduction element subject to internal heat generation?
b) A composite wall consists of two materials as shown in figure. Outer surface temperature
is 80 0C. Convection takes place on the inner surface of the wall with co-efficient of
25w/m2 0C and a temperature of 120 0C. Determine the temperature distribution in the wall.

16. A Composite wall consists of 3 materials as shown below, the outer temperature is 30 0C,
convective heat transfer takes place on the inner surface of the wall with 700 0C and h = 35
w/m2 0C. Determine the temperature distribution in the wall. K 1= 25 w/m0C, K2= 20 w/m0C,
K3= 10 w/m0C.

17. Determine the temperature distribution in a composite wall consisting of two layers of
different materials, as shown in figure. Use two finite elements.

18. Heat is generated in a large plate with k = 0.7 w/m 0C at the rate of 3000 w/m3, the plate is
20cm thickness, outside surface of plate is exposed to atmospheric air at 35 0C with
convective heat transfer coefficient, h = 25w/m2 0C. Determine the temperature distribution
in plate by taking 2 elements.
