2. For a steel bar shown in figure below (i) develop the global stiffness and consistent mass
matrices and (ii) determine the natural frequencies and mode shapes using the characteristic
polynomial technique. Take A1=600 mm2, A2= 200 mm2E = 210GPa, = 7600kg/m3.
3. Determine the natural frequency and displacements of a stepped bar as shown in figure. Also draw the
3
mode shapes. Take E = 190 GPa, = 7700kg/m .

15. a) Derive the Load vector of 1-D Conduction element subject to internal heat generation?
b) A composite wall consists of two materials as shown in figure. Outer surface temperature
is 80 0C. Convection takes place on the inner surface of the wall with co-efficient of
25w/m2 0C and a temperature of 120 0C. Determine the temperature distribution in the wall.
16. A Composite wall consists of 3 materials as shown below, the outer temperature is 30 0C,
convective heat transfer takes place on the inner surface of the wall with 700 0C and h = 35
w/m2 0C. Determine the temperature distribution in the wall. K 1= 25 w/m0C, K2= 20 w/m0C,
K3= 10 w/m0C.
17. Determine the temperature distribution in a composite wall consisting of two layers of
different materials, as shown in figure. Use two finite elements.
18. Heat is generated in a large plate with k = 0.7 w/m 0C at the rate of 3000 w/m3, the plate is
20cm thickness, outside surface of plate is exposed to atmospheric air at 35 0C with
convective heat transfer coefficient, h = 25w/m2 0C. Determine the temperature distribution
in plate by taking 2 elements.
