5k and 10k 15K and above 5K 10K and above
Single ram Dual ram Dual ram Triple ram

A safety factor of 1.2 is used when selecting pressure control

equipment and relates to the MPWHP of the well.
Example: if MPWHP is 4500psi, multiply by 1.2, equals 5400psi, hence 10000psi
equipment must be used

Pressure testing
Surface induced
Only water or a water/glycol mixture is to be used
Well induced
Well fluids can only be used when the following criteria have been met

No H2S present
Cased hole in a known reservoir
MPWHP has been reached and does not exceed 5000 psi

Bypass pipe work system to be used not by opening swab valve

When pressure testing equipment in the field, WP rating of the
equipment cannot be exceeded

Pressure equipment requires major re-certification every 5 years

Flexible hoses all have a TP rating of 1.5 x WP rating, but also

have a burst pressure rating as given below

WP rating TP rating Burst Pressure rating

5000 psi 7500 psi 20000 psi (x 4)
10000 psi and above 15000 psi 25000 psi (x 2.5)

All pressure bearing screwed connections made up on the well

site must have an O ring seal, the only exception being line
pipe/NPT or less threaded fittings, these can be used up to
10000 psi. Above 10000 psi WP Autoclave engineering fittings
must be used.

Hydraulic BOPs and Stuffing boxes must be used on wells

containing H2S.

When running long toolstrings the downhole safety valve cannot

be used as a barrier.

Surface Pressure Barriers (POM 9.2.4)

Valid single barriers are:

For Slickline
Single ram BOP
Stuffing Box

For Braided cable

Dual ram BOP - grease injected between the rams
Single ram grease pack BOP
HGT include flow tubes and pack off

Valid dual barriers are:

For Slickline
Dual ram BOP

For Braided cable

Triple ram BOP - grease injected between the rams
Dual ram grease pack BOP

Useful tubular volumes

Rule of thumb ID2 = bbls. per 1000ft

Actual volume ID2 x 0.0009714 x depth = bbls.

Amount to pressure up = volume of column x pressure required x 0.000003

Calculations

Stem force

To calculate the force to be overcome to enter the well use the following
formula, remember this will give you the balance point, your weight needs to
exceed this amount

Force = Pressure x Area

Force what we have to exceed using stem bar

Pressure the Well Head Pressure

Area cross sectional area of the wireline being used (see table below)

Wire Size X' sectional area Stem Size Weight - lbs/ft

To calculate standard stem weight per foot use the formula: OD2 x 8
3
Pressure
PT = P A + P H
PT Pressure (total)
PA Pressure (Applied) - WHP or Annulus observed on a tree gauge
PH Pressure (Hydrostatic) result of fluid gradient and depth

Hydrostatic pressure = Fg (fluid gradient - psi/ft) x TVD (true vertical depth - feet)

Fluid gradient Fg (psi/ft) = lbs/gal x 0.052

Refer to fluid gradient tables on next page

Good practices

Use the least amount of Stem possible to perform the operation

Use Brass shear pins
Set a valve catcher (junk basket) before pulling/setting valves
Ensure pressures at SPMs are equalized before commencing operation
Remove upstroke jars before setting gaslift valves
Record changes to toolstring/kick over tool on problem SPMs
Record serial number, depth and pressure of valves set

Decision tree for wire breaks

Formula to calculate the top of the wire

TOW = [D (C + L) ] + [((C + L) x F) + H]
1000

TOW - Top of Wire (estimated)

D - Depth tool was in the hole when the wire broke
C - Counter reading with the wire spooled back to the counter-head
L - Length of wire from counter-head to zero point including going
Over the stuffing box sheave

F - Fallback factor of wire from chart

H - Height or distance the tools fell down the hole after the wire
broke

Once a fishing job has occurred the objective is to rectify the situation as safely
and efficiently as possible, to meet these criteria here are some guidelines:

Check the well files for previous problems

Always run slowly observing odometer and weight indicator closely
Record length of wire recorded
Always run wire grab on jar up to release pulling tool
Keep careful record of toolstring lengths and O.Ds
Function test all tools
Test wire frequently
Avoid kinking the wire
Always ensure the largest OD on the toolstring is below the mechanical
jars
Plan, execute then evaluate constantly
If unsure - ask !!!!
