Sound

There are three main categories to consider when dealing with sound and these are dialogue,
music and effects. The sound research I will be conducting will look into sound effects and music.
There are two types of sound:
Non-Diegetic sound is said to be non-diegetic when the source is
not present or implied in the narrative. Within my trailer, I would like to
use stringed musical instruments in the background to augment
emotions according to the trailers narrative because stringed
instruments are commonly associated with romance. In addition,
because Ill be incorporating gothic elements within the narrative, using
classical music would be impactful in creating a bone-chilling effect.

Diegetic sound is called diegetic when the source of sound is visible

Nature - symbolises the unconscious or implied within the film. Common diegetic sounds present in most
and its mysteries, perfect setting for films are actors speaking to each other (dialogue), sounds originating
Gothicism mystery and darkness. from any object on the screen, like footsteps and police sirens or music
that comes from a sound system. The diegetic sound within my trailer
would most likely be the sound of nature; the rustling of leaves or the
howling wind- which I would like to implement because it is a convention of the gothic/romantic genre

Sound Ideas and themes

I noticed that in a lot of the trailers that Ive analysed, the dialogue is limited and very to the point. The emphasis tends to be
on the non-diegetic sound working with the visual image to create an overall atmosphere, whereas the dialogue is used
singularly as exposition of key plot points. Sound is very important within a
romance to help set the tone and atmosphere. Instruments such as a guitar,
piano or violin (string) instruments can be used effectively through non-
diegetic sound editing to help the Romance film flow. However, the trailer I
am producing will incorporate gothic elements so a combination of string
instruments (commonly associated with Romance) and sounds associated
with gothic genre such as nature and classical music are most likely to be
used. Seen with the Blue Is The Warmest Colour trailer, the only sound played
was the music playing in the background there was a certain solitude that I Solitude - symbolises remoteness,
admired about the trailer because it was only focusing on the relationship withdrawal and loneliness. An ailment
between the two girls Emma and Adele without any need for dialogue. For the of love
film trailer I would be producing, I would like to focus on the main character
without dialogue from the film, that sole focus would be a main element of
Gothicism within my trailer, for the time being. Furthermore, Im considering for the film
trailer to be a monologue from the protaganist to refine the theme of loneliness to the
audience.

Research
On the theme of classical music, I researched composers whose music primarily
included piano and string instruments, a minor key and slow tempo. I found a
concerto by Alfred Schnittke and felt the opening passage had a particularly chilling
and disconcerting atmosphere that would be suitable for my trailer. However due
to copyright laws I would not be able to take the music directly so if I do use it in
my trailer, I would need to record my own version with credit to him - If I was really
producing and distributing a film for profit I would require the permission from the
composer (or whoever the ownership passed to when he died) to use his music in Alfred Schnittke - a Soviet
my film. and German composer

In this style of trailers, the music is often modified or combined with a synthesizer to add another layer to the
main track, creating an unnerving droning sound. I would like to experiment with using this effect to supplement
transitions in my trailer. I searched the internet for royalty free music sites like 'Incompetech' and 'freeSFX' and
browsed them for tracks that I could use for intensifying the background music in addition, or as an alternative to
the classical music. I also looked for effects that would be relevant to my trailer and that I could not easily
recreate myself. I was also thinking of filming some of the location shots in the park or by a stream. A common
convention of trailers in my chosen genre is for the sound effects to be amplified. This adds to the dramatic
soundscape and works to signify important props, places, events or ideas of the narrative to the audience. I can
incorporate this into my work in a few ways.
Furthermore, I researched into Interior monologues as I would like my
trailer to be a stream of consciousness from the protagonist towards the
anatagonist and the audience. Interior monologues involve a character
externalizing their thoughts so that the audience can witness experiences
that would otherwise be mostly internal. In contrast, a dramatic
monologue involves one-character speaking to another character

Sound effects (SFX)

All the trailers that were analysed used sound effects. The trailers I enjoyed
in terms of sound effects were The Butterfly Effect and Single White
Female. The Butterfly Effect used dark metallic sound effects whilst single
white female was eerie and melodic. Due to the genre of my trailer being
primarily Romantic, lighter and more melodic sound effects would be used.
Although I liked the sound effects used in The Butterfly Effects trailer, I
A bird chirping think itll personally be too harsh, even though the sub-genre is Gothicism.
Also, natural sound effects such as birds chirping and the howling wind, like
I have said before orchestrates a calmness and a silence that refines whatever is taking place in the setting, this is
vital for my trailer because that is the main feature of Gothicism within the trailer. I will achieve these features by
going outiside into parks and forrests and record the sound.
