of the Earth

EARTH
It is the only known planet
with an environment to
support life.
Earth is often referred to as
a Goldilocks Planet.
Goldilocks Planet
It is a planet with the right
distance from its Sun to
allow temperatures for
liquid water not too hot,
not to cold.
Goldilocks Planet
On Earth, everything is just
right for living things.
Its warm but not too warm.
It has water but not too
much water.
Goldilocks Planet
Earth is the only planet known
to have lots of liquid water.
Liquid water is important for
life.
Earth is the only planet where
life has been found.
Goldilocks Zone
a.k.a. Habitable Zone
The place at just the right
distance for liquid water
and life.

Factors that
Make a Planet
Habitable
Factors that Make a
Planet Habitable
Temperature
Influences how quickly atoms
and molecules move
Water
Dissolves and transports
chemicals within and to and
from a cell
Factors that Make a
Planet Habitable
Atmosphere
Traps heat, shields the
surface from harmful
radiation, and provides
chemicals needed for life,
such as nitrogen and carbon
dioxide.
Factors that Make a
Planet Habitable
Energy
Organisms use light or
chemical energy to run their
life processes.
Nutrients
Used to build and maintain
an organisms body.
Some Goldilocks
Factors that Allow
Life on Earth
to Exist
1. Proximity to the Sun
Allowing Liquid Water

This is essentially the

greens-fee for any form
of life in the universe.
No proof yet on whether
life can exist water
without water.
2. The Size and Composition
of earth as a Rocky Planet

The current science

indicates that a rocky
planet offers the best
foundation for life and
especially the diversity of
life.
3. Stability of Earths
Atmosphere and Chemical
Composition

Our atmosphere is rich in

Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide,
Oxygen, and other
compounds that create a
benign atmosphere
combination.
4. The Magnetosphere

This invisible gravity

shield deflects radiation
from the Sun and space
and protects organisms
on the planet from solar
winds.
4. The Magnetosphere
5. Consistency of
Temperatures on Earth

The average temperature

on Earth not only allows
liquid water to exist, ut
also provide a relatively
stable environment for
organisms.
6. Diversity of Life

It creates a food chain

that can sustain a variety
of species allowing for
greater evolutionary
development.
7. Earths Moon

Our moon has a remarkable

stabilizing effect on our
planet. Without the moon,
the rotation of the Earth
would result in a day that
averages about 4 hours.
8. Stability of the
Sun as a Star

The heat and radiation is

typically consistent
although occasional solar
flares do show up to send
out burst of radiation.
9. The Ozone Layer

Its another buffer against

solar radiation especially
ultraviolet radiation and is
another result of our
dense and complex
atmosphere.
10. The Amount of
Water on Earth

Water on a planet is a
great way to give life a
head start.
Earth has more than
enough of it.
11. Jupiter as Solar
System Vacuum

Its immense gravitational

field acts like a system wide
vacuum cleaning attracting
rogues asteroids, comets,
and meteors to its surface
and away from other planets
including Earth.
12. The Stability of the
Solar System

Our Solar System is

relatively stabilized in terms
of planetary orbits that help
avoid rocky debris and
comets in constant collision
across the planets.
13. Our Location in the
Milky Way Galaxy

Our location is at the edge

of the spiral arm of Milky
Way Galaxy called the Orion
Arm which provides our
planet relative stability and
safety.
14. The Stability of the
Milky Way Galaxy
Our galaxy is small compared
to some of the giants that
occupy the universe. This
could decrease the odds of
dramatic and cataclysmic
events that might take place in
a dense, massive galaxy.
