Philosophy of Education

Fall 2017

As a future educator, I believe the best learning occurs when the teacher approaches the

classroom with a holistic perspective. In implementing a holistic approach to education, the

classroom focus will shifts from overall grades, test scores, and report cards to helping each

student develop their individual skills and abilities and overcoming challenges in a manner most

effective for that student. The holistic approach also recognizes the variety of influences

affecting students every day. Understanding these influences will help me make tailored

decisions in regards to instruction, activities, and assignments.

Secondly, an educator should understand diversity and the variety of ways it can manifest

itself in the classroom. Physically identifiable differences as well as those that are not physically

identifiable should be taken into account in the preparation and development stages of lesson

planning. In doing so learning objectives will become more relevant to each student. I believe it

is also important to help students understand the role of diversity in their own lives. It is my goal

for students to recognize and develop an appreciation for the diversity within their classroom,

school, and community.

Thirdly, educators should develop a solid foundation in managing and controlling the

classroom environment. Promoting a structure and clear boundaries, rules, and procedures for

students to follow will diminish disruptions and distractions during class time, allowing for

greater growth and learning to take place. Consistent and valuable communication with both
students and parents can also aide in classroom management by creating positive relationships

between the home and school.

Fourthly, educators should consistently assess students by using state and national

standards as benchmarks. Using state and national standards will provide the teacher with a clear

vision of what content students have mastered and what content needs further instruction.

Following state and national standards will also help in the appropriate sequencing of concepts

and ideas. It is also essential to expose students to a variety of test and assessment formats.

Students with different learning needs and learning styles will benefit from assessment that

addresses those differences.

Lastly, the use and implementation of technology can provide rich and resourceful

learning experiences for students. Technology can allow teachers to present information to

students in multiple ways, allow students to interact with the material, and can quickly provide

assessment data to make teaching decisions as instruction takes place. I believe it is important to

use technology often in the classroom and to demonstrate to students how to use it as a learning

tool.

I believe using this conceptual framework will create a conducive learning environment for both

the teacher and students. Understanding students individual needs, circumstances, and learning

differences will help me provide students with tailored and meaningful curriculum and activities

that will create enduring knowledge. Effectively managing the classroom, assessing students

appropriately, and incorporating multiple uses of technology will ensure the necessary

knowledge and skills are mastered throughout the class.
